“Beautiful location”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

Sadly the Hotel is stuck in a time warp of decoration from the 80's. We stayed in a very large room with hardly any heating, the radiators were barely on and the three mobile ones had to be propped up on saucers to prevent a fire. Also there were three of us and only 2 lots of everything like cups and towels.
Having said that the breakfast was excellent and the walk from the front door across and round the lake was the nicest walk I have ever done in the Lakes.
Times are tough but decor matters to modern people, even a cheap up to date redo would be fine.
Sadly would not stay again.

Dear hgb1809,

Thank you for your review - we take our customers' comments seriously especially when aspects of their comments are not positive.

Our programme of updates is a long one - 17th century Grade II listed buildings are like that sometimes. We have obviously had to prioritise and have done a lot of work on customer service, food and drink (and have won awards in these areas) but the bedroom overhaul is I admit taking longer than I would like.

Thank you for your lovely comments about the breakfasts you had with us - it is good to hear we are winning with our food service! I hope you would give us the opportunity to look after you again in the future when we have completed our renovations.

Every New Year for the past few Years we have been going for lunch between Christmas and New Year, this Year we had had a long walk in the rain and was looking forward to the home made food and a great burning fire as in previous Years.
We got there and it looks like it has changed hand.
There was no fire lit , hardly any Christmas decorations up, there was a lot of people there but no warmth in the place and the food was shocking.
Frozen chips (never in the past they was allways home-made) smaller plates, all the food looked pre packed and over expensive.
No excuses absolute rubbish and would not recommend the place to anyone who has had a long walk and looks forward to good food and good ambience!!

Dear angelina17,

Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you regarded your visit as 'Rubbish' - we strive to make sure everyone enjoys themselves here, and by the look of our visitor's book we generally seem to succeed.

The reason we have some smaller plates for lunch is because we have found that our customers prefer a lighter bite at lunchtimes - our new £5 menu (all homemade and homecooked) has proven to be very popular. Larger portions are available if a fuller lunch is what is required - and these come on very big plates..!

To my knowledge, like most of the pub industry in the area, the hotel has used frozen chips for over five years (the length of time I have been here) but we are always trying to improve things and with a new chef joining soon, we are investigating the possibility of moving to fresh chips.

Christmas is an interesting one - for every guest that wishes we had more decorations up, there is someone who feels more 'Bah Humbug' about the festive season and would prefer none!

I hope you feel able to give us another chance, and if it is a cold day, rest assured the fire will be blazing.

Stayed on a Groupon offer but were allowed to upgrade to a weekend night for an extra £20 and a choice of room. My wife had just come out of hospital and once this was mentioned to the staff, nothing was too much trouble for them. Being a CAMRA member, the choice and quality of local Cumbrian beers was superb, with even a 10% discount for card carrying members! The food and service was very good with a wide choice of locally supplied ingredients. During the winter, The Badger Bar seems to attract a large number of local people for food, which gave it a really special feeling, and not at all like a tourist venue. A beautiful location by Rydal Water with both Wordsworth's Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount nearby; it seems that his beloved daughter Dora lived with her husband at Glen Rothay for a short time before her death, with a bedroom now named Dora's Room. We have booked a return visit for my birthday in May.

Stayed with husband on a groupon deal. Had two nights bed and breakfast with dinner first night plus a bottle of wine. Did not use the spa passes. Bedroom was cold when we arrived but plenty of heaters offered. Still never really warmed up. Food very good As a whole the place is just a bit lacking in finesse. For example they knew we were booked to eat but table we were placrd on in the oak room was not set with cutlery. At breakfast no serviettes provided. This is a nice country pub/ hotel with very friendly staff who just need a bit more direction. A hint of Fawlty towers. Husband loved the beers. By the way the badgers are real there and do get fed every night.

If what you're looking for is a hearty, welcoming and chilled out stay surrounded by lovely staff then this is the place for you. It's not for people looking for that spick and span soulless hotel with the latest chrome finishes and matching everything... the furniture might not match but why should that matter?! The landing is wonderfully wonky and the whole place has bags of personality. If you can look beyond the superficiality of furnishings, then this place is a quintessentially english example of customer service at its best. The breakfasts were fabulous - not many people get hollandaise sauce right. The bar staff couldn't have been more helpful rustling up fabulous mulled wine after we were soaked through. Their lunchtime special menu was great value and they make a cracking log fire. There is always scope for some improvements and yes of course you can find fault - but I wouldn't want to. That's not what this place is about. Go and stay with some lovely people, have a laugh, come home fatter and marvel in a business that puts people at its heart.

We just picked up a Groupon offer for a two night stay, including Dinner B&B the first night and a bottle of bubble, then B&B the next night. You could buy a great lunch for a fiver.
Not only was that a great deal in itself but also included were two day passes to Langdale Spa - worth £60 - what a great place to spend The Lakes famous rainy days.

We were the first Groupon guests, and so the Owner Ric and Manager Andy explained we were guinea pigs (Ive been called all sorts in life but this is a first).
Whilst i was happy with all aspects of the holiday - the location, the room, and the food, it was the down to earth open friendliness of the staff that made it for me. It felt like goin back home to the family. Of course the northern humour helps.
I had the best hot bath ive had this year - so long and deep. And the hotels proximity to Rydal Water is literally a stones throw (OK so you have to be good thrower, but..) There is a easy path around the lake or a longer hillier walk across to Grasmere.

We stayed in room 7 and i had the double bed on the first night where i slept like a log (the bubbly could have helped), but my friend in the single bed didnt sleep well. The second night we swapped and i didnt sleep well in that bed.
My friend felt the hotel needed a bit of upkeep , and a new carpet. oh, and she didnt like all the attention from the staff - Me? I loved it.
One thing i would have changed was that the spa passes are for the day of leaving rather than the day of arrival. That said as check in time is early we could have used the pass then.

All in all it was a great midweek break - and I will be back.

Room Tip: A hint - If you want a room with a lake view - Try the four poster bed room or the other posh room...

This hotel was a real find - we picked up a Groupon voucher from the Liverpool offers but the hotel is actually in a glorious part of the lake district! Just got back!
From the start the staff were brill - so friendly on the phone and very welcoming and helpful during our stay. It was like we were part of a family!
WARNING - don't stay if you want a formal boring hotel experience - this place is quirky and characterful and you need to know this! The reception is effectively the bar (which according to my partner has good real ale) so don't expect uniformed bellboys :)
Dinner was included on the first night but instead of forcing you to sit in some quiet restaurant we were allowed to just pick a table in the buzzing bar areas, and then they basically let you pick anything off the menu.
The room was oldy worldy we paid a bit more and got a fourposter bed - very clean and cumfy tho.
If you missed the groupon you missed out we will be back ha ha Thanks to Andy and Ned you rock guys
