We stayed just before the Christmas period and we were so happy with the B&B. Such a large house, and such welcoming hosts. They only operate 3 rooms, but this just makes the place so much more unique and special. Gigantic, clean room. En-suite bathroom bigger than most rooms I've stayed in. Coal fire in guests lounge. Full English that was served at a time that suited us. Paul was an excellent host, as was Dennis the chihuahua !

(£35 PPPN) - I've paid 4x the amount for far less in the past, especially in rip-off Lake District. An absolute find and shall be returning soon.

We discovered this fantastic place whilst out hiking, could not believe the price. We have stayed there 3 times in 16 months, a great get a way from it all place to be. I see that people have been moaning about it. Why??? It is a beautiful house, massive rooms, CLEAN, the family that run it are FRIENDLY, the dogs do not roam the whole house and sweet natured and funny. The grounds are breath taking, and it is a great base for hiking, you do not need to get back in the car till you are going home. Amblside is a short walk away, handy for getting an appetite for your evening meal. If people do not want to go back, than more fool them.

We stumbled upon Foxghyll when looking for a long weekend away in the lakes. What a good choice!!!
The Guest House was easily accessible from both the north and the south (Follow the directions given to you when you book, DO NOT TRUST YOUR SATNAV), and perfectly placed to reach all the attractions of the Lakes.
Paul and Marjorie, the owners, were always very helpful and friendly, and always stopped for a chat.
We stayed in the Spa room and we were very impressed with the size of the room. It is much larger than your average B&B room, with a gorgeous view of the fields and hills, and it has a large En-Suite bathroom as well. The Spa bath is really relaxing after a long day walking up hill and down dale!
This room also has direct access to the garden, which is a huge landscaped garden with a small stream running through and benches to sit and relax, and tables to sit at in the morning sun with a hot cup of coffee!
The full English breakfast was lovely, just enough to set you up for the day, and there was a good choice of cereals and fruit as well!
The decor isn't modern, but its a 400 year old house! Anything more modern would ruin its traditional charm.
We will definately be going back to Foxghyll, and will be recommending it to friends and family.

This is our fourth visit, after a hiatus of several years, and I am pleased to say that Foxghyll is still the destination we fell in love with all those years ago. Stunning location, with a beautiful, quiet atmosphere. Rooms are just enormous, and just loved the walks from the front door. A superb secret away from the masses in Ambleside. See you again next year.....

I took my American husband to The Lake District and he loved it, even though we only had 1 really warm sunny day out of the 5 - and 5 hours from Cambridge is quite a trek there AND back, the views are inspirational for his painting and the people were delightful.

Foxghyll is a huge country house and the (pink) room was massive which, when it's cold and raining outside, offered comfortable sitting and relaxing space without laying on a bed - with a 2-bar electric fire that warmed us up quickly. We had the best nights' sleep we've had for months and loved the place.

The hot water is HOT HOT HOT ..... and that 3/4 bath made for a good soak after a day's walking. When we wondered if we'd take too long drawing massive baths every morning, Paul offered us a shower right next door!

How anybody can say that the breakfasts are small, I just don't know what people expect? Apart from juice, cereals and toast, we had really good tea and/or coffee and the fried breakfast consisted of a fried egg, THREE rashers of bacon, a sausage, fried potatoes and fried bread and tomatoes - how much more can people eat?

We had a lovely time and thought it was terrific value.
