We had a three nights break here from September 7th, and enjoyed our stay.
Paul was a very good host, and we enjoyed the breakfasts which he prepared.
The house is lovely, and the surrounding area is well worth a visit.
(We had the four poster room, and the bed was very comfortable).

we spent 3 nights here this week on a last minute booking and we were so pleased with our choice. The house is a beautiful family home and has only 3 guest rooms which are spacious and well equipt . The decorating is slightly dated however the room is immaculatly clean and we couldnt have wished for better hosts. Breakfast offered a wide choice of cereals , fruit and full cooked breakfast and all came with a lovely touch of wooden brain teaser games on the table as a conversation starter between couples, guests and owners.
The house itself is an easy 1 mile stroll from ambleside and around a 5 mile walk from Grasmere. Perfect for walkers with Loughrigg fell being directly at the back of the house. Great location , brilliant price and wonderful hosts. A real home from home , we will be back

We spent five nights at Foxghyll and had a lovely time. The house is beautifully set against Loughrigg Fell and the rooms are large and comfortable with an old traditional feel to them (we had the four poster bedroom). Ambleside is only a short walk away so we had access to everything we needed within a short distance but could easily retreat to the peace and tranquillity of Foxghyll. The only sound to be heard was birdsong and the babbling River Rothay. Paul was a lovely host and provided super breakfasts each morning to keep us going for the day. There was also always a welcome from Roy and Dennis (dogs) each time we came through the front door! Paul was also very helpful with advice and information on where to go and how to get there. A great base from which to explore the Central Lakes - we would certainly visit again.

We stayed at Fox Ghyll for three nights over the weekend of the Great North Swim. The house is charming and characterful and our room was big and comfortable, with a big bathroom.

The house is secluded and is in within easy walking distance from Ambleside along a pleasant road near a stream and some fields. You could catch a bus in Ambleside to the Great North Swim site a short journey away at Low Water.

Our hosts could not have been more welcoming and friendly. The night before my swim, we mentioned that we would have to be up and out before breakfast was served, and so our host very kindly offered to leave breakfast in the room in a cool box - we were delighted to find it stocked full with orange juice, croissants, Danish pastries, cereal and other goodies, very generous and really going the extra mile. The cooked breakfast on the two other mornings was also excellent.

We would highly recommend Fox Ghyll for anyone doing the Great North Swim next year or any other visit to the Lakes.

Stayed July 2013. The house is charming and full of character. Our room was a good size and the breakfasts hearty.
The house is in a secluded location that feels in the country, but with 15 minute walk you can be in Ambleside. A path at the side takes you up to Loghrigg walks and a few minutes drive to Rydal and Grasmere.
Paul, the owner, was a great host and made sure were well catered for.
2 points: a. they do not accept credit cards, b. if you want the most modern facilities, this may not be for you.
However, we loved our stay and would definitely recommend if you want to experience English charm and character.

Had a great room (the spa bathroom) with good views of the hills across the house's chimney pots which made a good photo. Paul and the dogs (Roy and Dennis) gave us a nice welcome and Paul is a very good host and cook. It's a good place to set off on walks into Ambleside or the area in general. Lovely tranquil spot felt like staying in a stately home. Roy even waved goodbye!

Room Tip: Spa room has door to garden and huge room. Includes a double and single bed both comfy.

Stayed with my partner for the weekend for my birthday to do some walking and sightseeing. We were greated by Roy and Dennis (2 chiwauwas) who let you know who's boss when you arrive and Paul the owner. The dogs gave us great amusement and had just as much character as the house itself!

To start with if your looking for a modern premises with all mod cons this is not for you as it is slightly dated. On the other hand if you're looking for a house full of character, history and original features set in the most idylic location then this is the place for you. it's a couple of minutes drive from Ambleside, if that. We stayed in the 4 poster room which had the most amazing views. The bed was so comfy it was hard to seperate myself from it in the morning! The room had a large tv and en suite bathroom. The bathroom has no shower (we knew this before arrival) which didn't bother us in the slightest but if you wanted, there is use of one down the hall. The water was always piping hot so guaranteed a lovely soak after a long day. Two heaters in the rooms so if you are chilly you can adjust accordingly. Towels changed daily and rooms cleaned with complimentary tea, coffee, sugar and a couple of rocky bars left daily. Now then breakfast...absolutely gorgeous and a wide range of choice. My only complaint about breakfast..... I put on 3lbs!!! The house is also lovely and clean.

Paul helped my partner arrange flowers and cake for my birthday too which was very kind of him. Paul is a very friendly host and made us feel really welcome in his home without being overwhelming. He gave us advice on the local and was a pleasure to talk to.

We would definitely stay at The Foxghyll again and will recommend it to others who are visiting the area. We would like to thank Paul for making our stay an enjoyable one.
