My wife and I have just returned from a recent 4 day trip to the Lake District. We stayed in the small village of Ambleside, which is at the bottom of Lake Windermere. Generally quite touristy, but has plenty of shops and restaurants, and is an excellent base for walks and Hikes.
For our 4 night stay, we stayed just outside Ambleside, on a delightfully quiet road called Under Loughrigg. We were recommended the B&B we stayed at by friends, although Foxghyll, (the B&B) only lets 3 rooms, it is actually a grand old country house with a fantastic, private 2 acre garden which was a joy to sit in & explore. The location is extremely quiet and peaceful, yet you are only about half a mile from the village centre. The room we stayed in was enormous, had a door to the garden, a spa-bath (ensuite), and to top it all there were no other guests staying during our visit, so we got pretty much the whole place to ourselves !!
Foxghyll is family run, and the son Paul couldn't be more obliging during our visit, as both breakfast and service was excellent throughout.
Foxghyll seemed to be a well kept secret in Ambleside, as at £30.00 PPPN. It seemed incredibly good value when compared with the (pricier) terrace house B&B’s in Ambleside town centre.
If you like your history (Foxghyll was once the home to author & poet Thomas De Quincey), and living like the manor-born, then I would highly recommend Foxghyll as the B&B of the Lake District. We have already booked our next stay.
