On arrival at this bar, we noticed they were advertising vacancies that night from £20. Having booked a room at £80, we assumed we would be getting a good standard of room - how wrong we were. Before getting to our room however, there was no-one at reception, and despite ringing the bell, no-one came - my husband had to go looking for someone. The individual who greeted us was very nice and friendly, however there was a distinct feel of no manager around. We weren't informed about what facilities the hotel had, or the general information one is told when checking into accommodation. She took us to room 14 - a room away from the other accommodation, through a function room and down some stairs - don't know if I'm speculating but it seemed the staff memer was embarassed by the room & coudn't get away quick enough. On the plus side, we weren't bothered by any noise from other guests, and luckily were out most of the night as there was a function that night in the adjoining room - a group of young people, who naturally were chatting etc and also using the toilet next to our room - they had left however by the time we got back - not ideal if we'd wanted to stay in our room or get an early night however.

Then the room itself: there was no blind in the window, despite it overlooking a main road, the bed was okay, and there was clean linen & towels however there was a distinct smell of damp from the carpet. The bathroom was dark & gloomy, there was a bath only, no shower & a rather noisy toilet - which we were told, "takes 8 minutes to fill" when we reported it not to be flushing right (by a unfriendly member of staff) - (At this point we also had to request toilet paper as there was none; the toiletries was one bar of minature soap). The bathroom had a net curtain only, which meant if the light was on, people could see in from outside - there is another hotel to the side.

On the plus side, there was loads of hot water and the breakfast was absaloutely delicious.

On reflection I wonder were we given this room as we had previously booked, and were the more attractive rooms kept for people calling on-spec? If this is the case, I think its poor business practice. I also noticed that this was the only place we stayed in that we weren't asked "was everything ok" when checking out - poor again. Perhaps if we had been treated better we would have had dinner & drinks in the Oakthorpe instead of taking our business to the pub across the street.

met our expectations of a well located decent hotel. close to the railway station / bus stop / supermarket and hence a good base to travel around the lake district. apparently run by a family, basic services. decent room facilities - room heater was very useful given that it was quite chilly while we were there. didnt visit their bar but got to know that it is well reputed in the neighbourhood and known for the ale offerings. basic english breakfast. can leave luggage if checking out ahead of departure from the town. a lot of options in the town, but not many probably close to station and convenient. recommended.

Stayed here in May 2010, and I must say we could not have been more pleased by this charming hotel. Yes, it does have quirky showers en suite, but thats not why you came to the Lake District. The staff works hard to make it look so easy and laid back, and they must never sleep, as they seem to be there 24 hours a day. The food was the best we had in the area, and is a showcase of the quality of the local products. A visit to the bar after dinner will be the perfect end to your day. If you are lucky, your night at the bar may yield a special treat of a locally made liqueur. This is also home to the best Sticky Toffee Pudding of the many we tried. Kudos to Alistair and Geoffrey for great Hospitality.

My US friend and I stayed at this hotel this past September on a visit to northwest England and Wales. We were delighted by these owner/mangers who work so hard 24 hours a day to serve their customers. The owner/chef was professionally trained in Switzerland and is frequented by the locals. His wife manages the hotel and restaurant and makes every effort to please. There are not that many mom and pop establishments left today and I think these owner/mangers should be encouraged. I highly recommend this hotel/restaurant/bar and plan to stay there on my next trip.

This hotel looks very nice from its website- don't be fooled. We loitered around waiting for 10 minutes when we first arrived, unable to find any staff. There was no bell and no phone at reception. A girl finally arrived but kept us waiting another 15 minutes while she answered the phone (in the bar) and chatted about a reservation for a month's time. The room was standard English-scruffy rather than the boutiquey chic suggested by the website. The shower- the most bizarre thing I have ever seen- was a little plastic box placed randomly against one wall. It leaked and pointed either straight at the door, which would make it spray through onto the bed- or over the top of the cubicle- again ending up spraying the bed. We didn't even get a toilet in the room, despite having paid £75/night for ensuite. (This was apparently the fault of the booking website we used, and not the hotel's problem). Couldn't tell you what breakfast was like, we didn't bother finding out. Avoid.
