“Hostelling with a toddler”
Reviewed 2 November 2012

We had a brilliant time at this hostel. The staff were so friendly and helpful, the food was good, the hostel was really clean and the veiws were amazing. This is our first experience of taking our toddler to a hostel and he absolutely loved it. There were even some toys to play with and everyone was so kind to him. Our room was big enough for what we needed and there was plenty of storage. We are lookinig forward to visiting other hostels now that we are members, and, if Windermere YHA is anything to go by, we are going to have some brilliant short family breaks in the next year.

Had a weekend stay here in October and loved it.
Came up on a Friday night and had a journey from hell, but was very pleasant to see a well stocked and reasonably priced bar to destress.
Rooms very tidy and clean and quite spacious.
Toilets / showers clean.
The staff were very good to say the least - friendly, well mannered and very helpful.
The breakfast was superb for the money - make sure you book this as it really is worth having, especially when you go trekking afterwards.
Stunning location and the surrounding areas worth exploring.
We had a car, bur only used it once as we walked most places and caught a bus back on one occassion.
Good lounge area to relax in as well.
Overall - well worth the money.

In short -
Adam: A hard working, honest and helpful star.
Views: Spectacular
Food: Lovely

Great value location for a weekend of climbing, drinking and fun! The views from the rear of the hostel are just amazing, and the service is superb - even after poor Adam working a 15 hour shift! For a night out, get a taxi down to Bowness, there is a great selection of bars and restaurants.

Had a group stay here and would recommend the same to anyone. Thanks to the aussie staff who clearly enjoy what they do, and nature for the lovely location and views.

My stay at YHA Windermere was fantastic. Wonderful place, clean, cosy, brilliant staff! Helped me with printing out e-tickets or charging up my phone when I couldnt find my charging cable. Breakfast was delicious, and the views from the dining room was breath-takning every morning. I will come back next year!

It is a little disingenuous to call this YHA Windermere. In much the same way as Ryanair airports are often nowhere near the city they purport to serve, this hostel is not in Windermere or even Troutbeck really, it is, however, in a stunning location overlooking the lake and set in beautiful grounds. The location is the key, the hostel staff are friendly and welcoming, the breakfast was great and the facilities all you would expect from a YHA including an impressive bar, but there is not all that much communal space and when I was there what there was was occupied by a school group.....None the less, a bottle of Cumbrian beer, some sweet chilli peanuts and a view of Windermere in the gloaming evening light.....worth a few quid of anyones money!

This YHA offers the reality of communal living, which experienced hostellers will be used to. The location offers very scenic views across the lake, enhanced if you're lucky by a rainbow. My breakfast was good, and the evening meal satisfactory. Living quarters were cramped, and in my two nights I slept sporadically at best. There was very limited storage space, nothing lockable. Frankly I longed for the earliest opportunity to get up out of the room! I felt the lounge space was limited and indeed that the hostel was due a facelift. The building has an interesting history, and the staff were very welcoming and willing to help. Provided you have transport, the location is convenient for the Lakes, although parking is also limited.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Lake District is a truly beautiful part of the world but like many amazing places, it can get busy. If you want to get the best of the area without jostling with the crowds, head to Broad Oaks Country House Hotel. However, if they are full, then may as well stay here at this YHA. Only 2 miles from Windermere town centre and offering panoramic views, this spectacularly situated hostel is a real gem. There's a lovely pace of life here - great if you want to unwind. We recommend you take a walk through the large wooded grounds and look out for the wonderful inhabitant wildlife. At the end of the day simply relax and enjoy gorgeous sunsets with a drink on the terrace. You may love the mix of old and older as this diminishing hostel offers some of modern facilities to possibly ensure a reasonably comfortable and 'okay' stay. ... more   less
