We loved it there. The staff was wonderful, the breakfasts delicious, and it was so convenient to everything. I would love to go back and spend more time there. We ate dinner there one of the two nights and had their large steak special, and it was perfect (and so were the chips).

The Grey Walls is a pretty grey building just a short walk from Windermere train station. It is a standard B&B with a lovely bar & restaurant. The best thing about this place though, is the staff. This family-run hotel gives you impeccable service with a smile. No request is too much for the staff there, they even chilled our wine in their fridge! The restaurant has a great menu including some offers on special days of the week. As a resident, you can ask for a loyalty card which allows you to have a discount at the bar for drinks. It is the only bar in the area that stays open past 11PM/12AM. There are friendly regulars and a free pool table, you are sure to have a good laugh here and a great, comfortable, relaxed stay. Thank you very much for an amazing stay! You helped make our holiday. From Sam & Aislínn :)

My wife and I have just returned from a weekend at the Grey Walls. It is in an ideal location in the middle of Windermere. On entering the pub/reception area it seemed a little old and tired but we were checked in immediately by a lovely young lady Carmen who couldn't have been more helpful and even offered to carry our luggage. She showed us to room 1, a large airy room with a separate seating area and a nice ensuite bath/shower room. We went out for the evening in Windermere and returned to the hotel quite late. We stopped for a nightcap in the bar which now seemed cozy and friendly. We had lovely breakfasts each morning, quality ingredients cooked nicely. On both mornings we were served by a young man who could not have been more helpful. I didn't get his name. Free parking is available on site. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 1 is fab.

Booked this as a family hotel as I have two boys under 3. The Grey walls isn't a hotel more like a pub with rooms. So you check in at the bar in between the local drunks getting served. When we arrived we instantly thought that it was shabby and needed a good clean but as we only booked for the one night we thought we would just make do after driving for over 3hrs.. The carpets looked filthy and walks covered in mould with a bit of paint over... Bathroom was filthy and the sliding door didn't close properly. My little boy (age 20 months) spilt his water on the bed I went downstairs into the pub and asked for a new sheet, the bar man looked at me blank and said he doesn't think he has any clean one this was at 3:30 check in was 3pm we managed to get some fresh sheets. My little boy had to use the toilet in the room but it was blocked, I tried unblocking it with the toilet brush without success. He finally went to the toilet and it blocked again, the toilet made so much noise as it was filling. To top it off the toilet started leaking right into door way onto the carpet. My little boy had walked into the toilet water then walked onto the carpet in the room. By this point id had enough and wanted to be moved!!.. I couldn't put the health of my children at risk for just the one night. I went downstairs and asked the bar man to change rooms as this wasn't acceptable or hygienic!!.. The bar man was as disgusted as us he said he completely understands but the hotel was full and he couldn't offer us another room. I wouldn't stay in that room where my little boy walked toilet water onto the carpet my 20 month old still has a dummy and he's forever dropping it then putting it back into his mouth. He said he fully understands and he would be the same in this situation. He needed authorisation from his manager but couldn't get hold of her, he said he would call me once he's spoken to her. we'd take the children for some dinner It was getting late in the day I think around 7ish we hadn't heard anything so I called the hotel, I was put through to the manager she advised me that she didn't have any other rooms and they would fix the toilet, I said that's fine but would the carpets be cleaned as he walked the toilet water onto the carpet and my little ones shouldn't have to sleep in a filthy room. She advised me that she wouldn't refund as the room was still available, the toilet would be fixed but that's all. I said that wasn't acceptable and that id be down to speak to her in person. When we got back to the pub she was very abrupt when I explained that it wasn't just the broken toilet the room was filthy and it had mould on the walls it got her back up she said id booked a budget room in windermere... A budget room in windermere cost me £120 this wasn't sold as a budget room the hotel looked like a hotel on the pictures not a scruffy pub with local drunks drinking from 11am

We wanted to check the room again she agreed and brought her husband with her. They both seemed very uneasy and very agitated a bit threatening but it was the final straw when the business owner threatened my husband. They made it very clear that the carpets wouldn't be cleaned and we wouldn't get our £120 back we at this point were very tired and my husband snapped and said we'd cancel out transaction with the bank. The landlord said to my husband get out of my hotel now before I phone the police. I thought he was going to hit him! I'm just so glad my little boys were in the car with our friends, the landlady was shocked with his behaviour and she had to calm him down then she agreed to our refund a partial refund so we still don't know if we'll get our money back..

Since writing this I had emailed the hotel reg the refund, they called me back saying that they would give me £80 back so they could cover the costs of cleaning the room and putting fresh bedding on, like it was our fault that the room was filthy and it wouldn't of needed doing if the toilet wasn't broken!!.. Please be aware especially if you have little ones this isn't a family hotel, this isn't a hotel at all it's a dump!!..

Stayed at the Grey Walls with my mum in March 2014. What a fantastic time. Great spot in Windermere and a pleasant walk down to the lake. Made to feel really welcome. The room was lovely, clean and had everything you would expect. Food was really nice and the atmosphere in the pub was comfortable and friendly. Have recommended it to work colleagues who have been and found the same. Will definitely be back. Thanks for a great time.

Me and my partner and our little King Charles spaniel had a fabulous time exploring the lakes from here. The service was fantastic. We had a lovely breakfast and they even offered water for our dog too. Good parking facilities and shops close by. Fantastic stay and at a really reasonable price. Thank you for such a lovely experience :)
