“Bar Food/service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2012

Group of 6 people (including a child)ordered food all at the same time. 3 got served within 15 mins. Only 1 member of staff serving both food and drink. Then bar got busy, no assistance for staff person, the other 3 waited a.n.other 25 mins, then when it arrived it was frozen( cooked at the same time ?) Waited a.n.other 20 mins but food was atrocious. 95% was left. As tourists, this has got to rank as the worst bar food I have ever ever had and am very happy to recommend " DO NOT EVER GO THERE !!!!" it is absolutely diabolical and the member of staff seemed more than happy drinking than trying to help customers.

Room Tip: The rooms might be very good, would certainly recommend eating elsewhere though unless you are on a...

We stayed here for the first night of our honeymoon (we were on our way to Scotland) and it was a pretty good start!
Lovely little room with a very comfy bed and very cosy too, the bar downstairs is great with a good selection of Real Ales and a log fire which is very welcome in the middle of February believe me!

Breakfast was lovely with a good selection to choose from and if you get the full works then you won't have to eat until dinner!
The only negative thing about our stay was the windows were only single glazed and as we were right next to the main road through Windermere it was pretty noisy in the morning.

Also the barman overheard us talking about our honeymoon and we got our next round for free!

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the road if possible

We went to the Elleray as I used to live quite close and used to play pool there quite often with my girl friend colleagues.
As soon as we walked in, the bar man (possibly the owner) greeted us. We sat down as we had two dogs with us while I went to the bar for drinks. I got our drinks and asked for a bowl of water for the dogs which he brought over.
The dogs spilled water on the floor so I asked for some blue roll but the barman said not to worry that he'd sort it.
The place was clean with black granite floors and a nice, big, welcomingly warm fire. Nicely decorated and good background music.
For lunch there was ample to choose from the three menus. We both chose from the £5 menu. The barman brought over cutlery and sauces as well as Tobasco for me as I like my food spicy. The food was warm, tasty and filling.
All in all a good, friendly, welcoming place with good food. Would go back for sure. :)

We were at the Elleray the same time as Wigan Vicky and her partner and could tell they were enjoying themselves, especially whilst sitting next to the roaring fire in the bar! All the staff were first class and took time to make you feel welcome. The food was top notch traditional pub grub and plenty of it; we couldn't manage the full Cumbrian after the first morning, so just settled for scrambled eggs on toast the following mornings. We were on dinner, B&B, so didn't have to go hunting for restaurants in the evening. This was the first time we had stayed at the Elleray although we visited it in the summer and knew what a great place it was. The bedroom and bathroom were large, but we felt a dressing table would have been handy (and extra coat hangers). The bed was the most comfortable I have slept in and all my aching joints from the days' walks were soon soothed. The weather was rather rainy/snowy, so it gave us the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time in the bar being entertained by John and the others. There's a good range of real ales and lagers etc. to choose from, don't think I managed all of them! Must try harder next time. On-street parking outside the hotel is made possible as the hotel has passes for guests, a good point. The train and bus stations are only a few steps away, if you want to leave your car at home.
All in all, we had a first class weekend at the Elleray and will certainly return in the new year.
By the way, happy birthday Vicky

Just got back from a weekend break in the elleray hotel had a great stay food ekcellent one of the best prawn cocktails ive had in years! lovly room clean and well equipted although not enough hangers in our wardrobe . John the barman was fantastic and made us feel at home he was helpful from start to finish and we felt he gave us the personal toutch so lacking in other places we have stayed in the past .The breackfast was excellent well served and a good choice and excellent local fare well done! The room was well cleaned and stocked up tea tray and showe gel shampoo conditoner of a good standard replenished every day well done housekeeping the fire was such a plus and made my stay so romantic. Shower in the room was hard to regulate and not very good pressure but was adaquate for two night stay however i would request a bath when we return which we will be doing all in all i would definatly recommend this hotel to anyone well done !

Room Tip: choose a bath rather than shower

Great place for dinner. Good selection of food for reasonable prices. Good selection of beers. Hawkeshead Brewery's Windermere Pale Ale was a stand-out (Citra aromatic hops). We were so impressed that we had dinner here two nights out of three. I had the Steak & Ale and veges both nights! Scrumptious! The bar service was quite slow on the second night - possibly due to it's polularity!

My girlfriend and I visited for the August bank holiday weekend. We were really happy with the Elleray. Windermere Town is nicer than Bowness-on-Windermere in our opinion, especially at this busy time of year. Bowness (which is closer to the lake) is just a 15 minute walk anyway.

The pub downstairs is very quiet, but that was cool, we had a couple of drinks one night. There are busier pubs within metres anyway.

You have to pay on arrival but this meant we could leave easily at any time so all good there.

The rooms where very comfy, and had everything we needed. Even a jug and coffee/tea. The breakfast was outstanding.

Limited parking but it didn't bother us. The street to the left you can park on for free with an Elleray sign in your window from staff, it was full on the 1st day but we got a park on the 2nd. Also the street in front is free parking between 6pm and 10am, and the train station is only £3.60 for 24 hours and very close.

All of the staff were great, and when we found a park out front Paul came out without prompting and gave us the Elleray parking sign to put in our window.

We also recommend hiring a boat in Bowness with a steering wheel, they are dead easy to drive. We walked passed the little red boat hire place, and instead hired the slightly bigger white ones from the next place along which have a blue sun-roof type thing. We then took a left and drove away from town, which was nice and quiet.
