“Lovely for a special occasion”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

We went for my husbands birthday in June and it was absolutely lovely, I don't think I've ever eaten so much in one go. We had pigs in blankets and crackling as nibbles in the lounge, we then had Morecambe bay shrimps for starter followed by steaks. The nicest steak I've ever eaten in a restaurant. Delicious. We also found room for dessert. It really was a treat - if anything it lacked a bit of ambience - it was a Friday evening in June yet there were only about 3 other tables in so was a bit too quiet in the restaurant. We loved it but will only be able to afford to visit on special occasions as it is very pricey.

“Great for Sunday lunch”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

This large, lovely and very comfortable pub/restaurant is a great find. It's full of big leather armchairs and comfy furnishings.

We went for Sunday lunch, and all the adults had a 3 course set menu for £21.

Portions were huge, but we still all managed to fit in an excellent strawberry and apple crumble at the end!

Roast dinners, salmon and the kids' curry and beef burgers were all well-presented and yummy. You could also ask for extra (huge) yorkshire puds, and a second helping of curry appeared very quickly for our son.

The kid's menu was great, in that you could choose starters, mains and puddings separately priced, and there were 2 sizes on mains and puddings to suit little or big children's appetites. It was also a good, broad range of choices.

The bar looked a lovely place to sit with a drink if you had time to while away.

We would all recommend it, and just wish we lived round the corner - though it's probably better for our waistlines that we don't!

“Smokin!!”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

We visited The Wild Boar after noticing a mid week offer during our time off from work. It had been recommended to us by family members so we were delighted to get a good deal on a two night stay. We also had the privilege of being upgraded to the bridal suite due to a cancelation which was fantastic, a large room and massive bathroom with free standing bath, (more than enough room for two!), and a private terrace. The bar area is lovely, lots of beams, stuffed animals, traditional features and a roaring fire which must be amazing in winter. The staff were great, very friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel sits in over 70 acres of land which is a lot of fun to explore and ensures you work up an appetite before dinner. They even have their own smokehouse which is used to smoke some of the products available on the menu. We had some of the best steak ever in the dining room, although we think the smoked options are not to everyones taste. The choice of food is traditional and a little limited but everything else we tried was very good. If the choices on the dinner menu lacked variety the same could not be said for breakfast. Cereals, continental breakfast and a list of cooked options are available leaving us spoilt for choice. If you're looking for a traditional stay in the Lakes look no further than the Wild Boar, bags of character in a great setting, lovely food, great hospitality and in a wonderful location.

“Pricey but worth it.”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Stopped in for lunch on the way to Windermere after reading reviews and loved it. You look at the menu and gulp at the price but as a treat do it... very tasty sandwiches although i wish they would have made more of the onsite smokehouse if it used it products, maybe even some promo stuff on the tables in regards to the brewhouse and smokehouse?? Would have loved to no if they did tours... This would have been 5 star but i dont like places that overcharge for soft drinks, drivers shouldnt be punished for driving and not drinking! Although in saying that the prices are probably comparable to other venues in the lakes. I would love to return for a evening meal and to sample the brew!

“Rare dinner out with just hubby.”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

My husband and I decided to go to The Wild Boar as we'd heard that it was very good and I'd seen ad's for it in the local papers and as it never has an address in the ads I presumed it must have a fabulous reputation so as not to need an address, a bit like everyone knows who 'Madonna' is. It was a Saturday night and the bar area consisted of big sqishy leather sofas and lots of pictures of hunting and fishing on the walls, we started off by having a taster platter, olives, feta, pigs in blankets, pork scratchings and quite limp veggy crisps with dips, all very nice and served on the obligatory lump of wood. We then were showed into the dark and large dining room, more leather, dark wood, pictures of hunting, it had a noisy vibrant atmosphere lots of families. The staff were all very welcoming and courteous and initally attentive, our starter was lovely Whitebait for me Scotch Egg for my husband. However we had to return our mains as it was all very salty, maybe a touch of absent minded ness when seasoning our plates or this was bacause we were drinking water and our palates were very clean and we could taste the food/seasoning plus the 'triple' cooked chips were saltier than any restaurant chains and devoid of any potato, why do they do this to the humble little potato, make it appear like a dried up husk? We did tell the waitress who swiftly took our plates away and asked if we wanted anything else, we did re-order but asked that no salt be added to the dishes and 15 minutes later they did appear and they were lovely. We didn't have a dessert on this occasion but they did sound lovely on the menu. We did notice that we were left alone after our second main appeared and we weren't asked if we wished to have a dessert or coffee, maybe the staff aren't taught the value of the added sell or they just wanted rid of us as we'd dared to complain. Would I go back - no, lots of other restaurants in the area to try and to be honest I like my food served on a nice plate not on slate and wood - & I like proper chips.
