Rum Doodle Bed & Breakfast

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 January 2014

After a last minute decision to get away for a night, we found ourselves in Windermere. We had no where booked, just planned to walk around and find somewhere nice to stay. After an hour of walking around we found nothing special.. We jumped on our phones and stumbled across Rum Doodle.. We was booked in with 5 minutes and on the doorstep with 10.

This was my first experience at staying at a B&B and didn't know what to expect. We was greeted by Gregor and was instantly made to feel welcome. We was shown to our room ( 5-Wish), which took our breath away. The smell, the feel, the colours, the ambiance, the 4 poster bed, the vintage touch, everything put a smile on our face.. We took up Gregor's offer of a coffee and homemade cake and he chatted with us informing us of the area, breakfast, his B&B and walks we could do.
We left that afternoon after a short walk to return to our room and just relax. And the room did that for us, a great bed, fresh crisp linen, a wide selection of tea's and coffee, dressing gowns in the cupboard and a warm shower.. Small things but done well. There was great information in the room about Gregor and Emma, Rum Doodle, walks, pubs and restaurants in the area.

We had a great night in Bowness, only a 10 minute stroll, and probably 20 minutes back as we had to many local ales, and a perfect nights sleep.

The next morning we went down for breakfast, greeted by Gregor's wife Emma with fresh coffee and a good selection of fruit, cereals and fresh juices. The menu for breakfast is the best I've seen, in fact I was stuck what to choose. My wife had the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on muffins and I had the poached eggs on smoked haddock.. Locally sourced and excellent.. Fresh baked bread, homemade jams and more coffee made our morning walk hard but worth it.

We have left Rum Doodle feeling sad, we wished we could have stayed longer. Gregor and Emma have took time and paid attention to detail to make the perfect getaway. This wasn't a special occasion for us, just a getaway, but Rum Doodle made it a special occasion for us.

We can't wait to go back and are already looking at dates. Well done Gregor and Emma, Rum Doodle is the gem of the lakes..

A lovely, stylish B&B run by a couple who seem to really enjoy what they do. Everything about our stay was excellent and made our two night break enjoyable.

Our room on the first floor wasn't huge but was furnished with characterful, carefully chosen furniture. I especially liked the little two tiered stand that held the tea/coffee stuff (cafetiere, home-made biscuits etc).

Breakfast was first class with locally sourced ingredients and more choice than I expected. I had a full English on the first morning and smoked haddock and poached egg on the second. Just what was needed before two long walks.

Won't go on - but I promise that this is a little gem worth discovering. We'll be back.

Enjoyed a two night stay in the 'Constant' room and had a wonderful time. The B&B is lovely, charming and eccentric with delightful little touches throughout. The room was just as described, and perfectly quiet for a great night's sleep after a long day of walking. The breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice on the menu. The hosts were super friendly and helpful and obviously love the area. Would definitely return. Many thanks for a great little getaway!

My husband bought me two nights here as a Christmas present, and we enjoyed this last week. I was absolutely delighted with the whole place, from the antique and reclaimed furniture, to the proper cafetiere and coffee in the bedroom to the well thought out décor and most excellent breakfast. Our host was very welcoming and brought us tea and cake upon our arrival, we felt we were going to be well looked after from the moment we arrived, and we certainly were.
If we come back to this area, we will look no further than this little gem of a place.

Room Tip: We stayed in room one, on the ground floor near the main entrance, but we weren't disturbed by o...

My husband and I stayed at Rum Doodle just after Christmas and New Year. We got married in the Lakes the year before and regularly visit, which is why I cannot believe we had not found the wondrous Rum Doodle before this. We received a lovely welcome, and the tea and cake was a lovely touch after our drive up. We had booked room 8, Burley, which is located at the top of the house. I loved the decor through out Rum Doodle, which is a mix of quirky, unique and cosy. Our room was fabulous, with great views and a huge bath. Being at the top of the house made us feel like we were locked away in our own little romantic bolt hole for the night. The next day I was sad to leave, but hope to return soon. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the Lakes now.

We got a really warm welcome from our host Emma who has created a little gem of a guest house. If you've read the book The Ascent of Rum Doodle you won't be the least bit surprised at the naming of this hotel. Every room is individually eccentric with something quirky to see everywhere you look. It wasn't until I was leaving I spotted the hall lights were made from several bowler hats!
Breakfast is excellent and cooked to order. I fully recommend the smoked haddock with poached eggs. Emma is an excellent host and we will definitely stay there again when next in the area.
