We booked to take my Mother to the four night Christmas package offered by the hotel, taking over a two bedroom cottage in the ggrounds a short walk from the main house.
We, and particularly my Mother, had a wonderful time.
The food was excellent; a perfect combination of two 'a la carte' menus with choice and two 'set' menus for Christmas Eve and Christmas lunch. All were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Service was excellent throughout.
What made the visit special was the attentive nature of the staff, well led by Andrew, the range of activities offered and the wonderful nature of the guests gathered into the hotel.

I took my wife here for a surprise birthday treat. I booked a pamper day in the spa followed by lunch included. It was perfect, she was over the moon. Spa staff were wonderful and really spoiled both of us. We were so chilled and relaxed after our treatments. Lunch was just what we have come to expect from Holbeck, it was beautifully prepared and presented and the attention to detail is excellent. I always delight in the waiter explaining exactly what one has on ones' plate, it serves to remind us that in some establishments people really do care about food and good service. We took coffee in the lounge by the fire which was wonderfully relaxing. It was a perfect day in a perfect location, the weather couldn't spoil the day but it did try. Thank you again.

What can I say that hasnt already been said about this exquisite hotel, we and my wife enjoyed a two night stay and where totally overwhelmed with the whole experience. We stayed in room 20 which has sensational views of lake Windermere, the room also a a sumptuous four poster bed, a large bathroom with a whirlpool bath. The real highlight of this hotel however is the dining experience from a Michelin star chef, the food is among the finest I have ever tasted and was only rivalled by the excellent service, no request is too small and you are made to feel like a real VIP. The location is also ideal with windermere and Ambelside on the doorstep, would not hesitate to reccommend this hotel to anyone, and can't wait to return again soon

This was our first visit to Holbeck Ghyll. On arrival we were met in the car park, which is really where the excellent service really started. They helped us to find a space and would have valet parked it if we had needed to double park. Bags were carried in and Andrew MacPherson the excellent General Manager came up and introduced himself and a member of his team showed us round, which was a really nice touch. I firmly believe that a lot of the things that make a hotel special don't actually cost them a lot of money. A friendly smile and a lovely welcome. Something that so many other hotels get wrong.

Our room was lovely with a seperate sitting room with a second TV. We also had patio doors out on to a terrace with seating and a gate which gave us a short cut to the carpark. The bathroom was large and well lit and even had a supply of Alka Selzer! The bed was very comfortable and there was tea making facilities as well as a letter of welcome and an Itinerary for the weekend, which was a Gourmet Weekend.

Drinks and canapes were served in both of the comfortable sitting rooms. The food was excellent and beautifully presented and the waiting staff were of a very high calibre, friendly and professional and would engage in a bit of banter if you encouraged them.
After wading through all the courses and wines it was all you could do to get back to your room!

Breakfast consisted of a selection of cereals, croissants, yoghurts, fruit juice, etc and a good range of cooked options. The kippers and Eggs Benedict were great. Yes - I know - we were gluttons, having this the morning after the night before, but it would have been rude not to!
Afternoon tea was also included in our package but we did draw the line at that!

The hotel is situated up a hill and tucked away from Lake Windemere, but it takes only a few minutes to get down to the lake.

There was a wide range of ages during our stay, so should suit most people. This is not a cheap place to stay, but I believe it offers value for money, as you can clearly see what they have to spend to be able to offer that level of service and comfort.

My only niggle was that the hotel was a bit too hot, but perhaps the 7 course dinner didn't help either! Lovely place for a special occasion.

Dear ukbusines,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review.
We thoroughly enjoy hosting our Gourmet weekends and they have proved to be a great success, this was only our second and we look forward to hosting more next year!
May I take this opportunity to apologise as I know we had a minor problem with our extractor fan during that weekend, hence the restaurant did get hot one evening.
We hope to welcome you back to Holbeck in the future.
With kind regards,
Caroline
