“A nice retreat amid the clouds”
Reviewed 25 January 2012

Perched on a hill overlooking the lake, this small boutique hotel is your perfect place in the Lake District. Nice large suite with private garden or balcony, a kitchenette and a nice bed.
The food was outstanding both the breakfasts and the two dinners we had.
Retire around the fireplace after dinner for coffee and liquor.
We stayed in the annex which is like a cottage. There are also rooms in the main manoir.
Excellent laundry but also ironing table in the room.

Room Tip: Ask for the suites in the cottage

I would like to start this review by noting that I have never felt the need to write a bad review on this site or any other but was so appalled by the quality of the service at this hotel/ restaurant that I felt compelled to do something.

We originally visited Holbeck Ghyll on 15 October 2011 to book our wedding reception in the “private dining room”. It transpired that the private dining room was actually a conference room due to undergo renovations. We were assured that all work would be complete by March 2012 at the latest and that the newly equipped kitchen attached to the “soon to be beautiful private dining room”, would specifically cater for private dining and would be “state of the art”. As our reservation was for September 2012 (i.e. almost a year's notice) we were informed that the works would be completed long before our reception and would not be a problem.

Sample menus were sent to us in November and in early December we received an email stating “I am delighted to confirm that the new venue is slowly nearing completion. I am hoping most elements of this new room will be confirmed towards the end of December / early January.” We emailed last week to sort accommodation for a couple of the guests joining the reception.

In reply to our e-mail regarding the accomodation we recieved a response stating, contrary to all previous information, that the private dinning room will not be ready in time for September and that Holbeck Ghyll would not be able to host our wedding reception (unless we are willing to pay for all guests to stay for a minimum of 2 nights at a minimum rate of approx £300 a night plus the cost of dinner for each person). I just cried and still cannot quite believe that a hotel that holds itself out as being 5* can treat customers (particularly ones discussing their wedding reception) like this. We would been fully prepared to arrange an alternative or back up venue had Holbeck Ghyll informed us at any point in the process that there was even a possibility that the works would not be completed – now we are left trying to do our absolutely best to find an alternative reception venue (the majority of which are now fully booked) – at the moment we really don’t know what to do.

If all that wasn’t enough, to top things off the hotel has not even had the decency to respond to our email expressing our distress at the cancellation which is, frankly, totally unacceptable – hence this review.

In the interests of fairness we should mention that the food at Holybeck Ghyll was very good on our visit, which is what prompted us to book it in the first place. However, our experience with the wedding reception means we could never recommend Holybeck Ghyll as a venue for a significant event/special occasion if this is how customers are treated.

We are truly sorry for the distress that has been caused. I am fully aware of your email and apologise unreservedly for our tardy response. I have asked our Business Development Manager to call you today. We were all under the impression that the area would have been re developed by the end of January. As soon as it became clear that this was not the case we felt it was correct to contact you. I am terribly sorry for the way we carried it out. I hope that after we speak today we can find a way forward. Once again, I am very sorry for any distress that we have caused.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew McPherson

Chose this place for the views, primarily, and was not dfisappointed. The lodge was perfect and must have one of the best views of Windemere available. The service was fantastic and we enjoyed a fabulous vegetarian dinner...many thanks to all the staff who made my wife's birthday treat so memorable

Room Tip: Lodge overlooking lake (Ms Tiggy Winkle block!) was amazing

Just back from a return visit to HG and it's a pleasure to report that their own high standards haven't dropped at all. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted and check-in was a smooth and simple process. We were in Room 2, which is of a good size and has a wonderful view of the lake. Unusually, the wardrobe is in the bathroom, but this didn't cause us any problems. As you would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant, meals are of a very high quality, and the staff are always on hand to answer any queries you have on the menu. It's not a very extensive menu, with about 5/6 starters and mains to choose from, and has small changes daily, but unless you were staying for a week then the choice should be adequate to have different dishes during your stay. There is an excellent wine list and includes a good half-bottle range too. There are also two very relaxing lounges which are ideal for your pre dinner drinks/canapes and also for your after dinner coffees/liqueurs too. This really is a perfect hotel with quality of the highest order and for those reasons alone, it's one of our favourite places to visit at any time of the year. HIghly recommended.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are always worth paying that little bit extra for

My husband and I had a Christmas present of a gourmet overnight stay at Holbeck Ghyll. It was a wonderful experience. The room was perfect, overlooking the lake. We found that the staff were extremely attentive and were at pains to make sure that we enjoyed our stay.(They also looked immaculate too!) The food was amazing, and beautifully presented. The general appearance of the hotel was to the highest standard. and we would recommend it to anyone wanting to feel pampered!
It was also very helpful to have suggested car trips to follow as a way of getting to know the area.
We are looking forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: It's worth the extra cost to secure a room with a lake view ie 2, 3 or 4

I booked this hotel with dinner and breakfast for my wife's birthday, it was recommended by a friend and it was an expereince to remember. The staff were extremely polite, the room was beautiful with a great view of the lake district mountains. The michelin star dinner was fantastic and I was so full at the end of the evening we both struggled to move. The breakfast was just as good with vegetarian option for us. It was a brilliant stay and a weekend to remember. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose any, they are all unbelivable
