We booked a three night say to have a luxury break and the experience was everything we hoped for. The room was lovely with a four poster bed, a stove lit for our arrival and a decanter of damson gin. the staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was amazing and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was one of a house party and we even met friends of friends. The location is stunning and lots to do and see using as much or as little energy as you wish. We will certainly return and that is the best reflection of our time there. I liked the way the staff were so good and yet still a discrete presence. The luxury after a long hard walk. For me there were no negatives, just a very enjoyable stay. I truly felt I had had a fantastic break.

Room Tip: Phone and ask the staff for advice for what you have in mind. I did and was very happy with their he...

We stayed at the holbeck ghyll to get away from the children for a while. When we arrived the receptionist (lisa) was rude in her manner. We asked to book a taxi for later that evening to go to ambleside and was told that ambleside was not very good and bowness was better. No what you want to hear. The food was ok bit the service well o feel i wouuld get better on a greesy spoon. I will never stay at the holbeck ghyll again nor will i advise friends to stay there

Dear Sir,

Please could you contact me at the hotel to discuss your stay. I am afraid that I am unable to find a record of your visit. Our receptionists are called David, Paula, Magda and Greg and are all very upset to hear that you thought they were rude.

I look forward to talking to you personally.

Stayed for 3 nights for our second visit to this wonderful hotel. We stayed in room 20 which has an amazing view of the lake and a lovely four poster bed. Dinner in the restaurant each night was excellent and the breakfast was superb. The staff are exceptionally courteous and friendly and attentive to the guests at all times. This hotel achieves a top quality service but is relaxing and friendly. We will definetly return later in the year and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

We booked Holbeck Ghyll for a bit of luxury R&R and were very, very happy with our choice. The staff were amazing from the outset, helping us to settle in after our journey and upgrading us to a lovely room with a lake view (number 1) - thanks Caroline! The bed was extremely comfortable and we liked the Penhaligon toiletries in the bathroom - very in keeping with the Arts & Crafts charm of the hotel.

Unsurprisingly, the food was absolutely delicious and the staff in the restaurant were great - very friendly and helpful. We chose the set menu on both occasions and every single dish was perfect. Breakfast was plentiful too - with all the usual choices, but prepared with attention to detail and service to match.

A truly memorable stay and highly recommended.

Perched on a hill overlooking the lake, this small boutique hotel is your perfect place in the Lake District. Nice large suite with private garden or balcony, a kitchenette and a nice bed.
The food was outstanding both the breakfasts and the two dinners we had.
Retire around the fireplace after dinner for coffee and liquor.
We stayed in the annex which is like a cottage. There are also rooms in the main manoir.
Excellent laundry but also ironing table in the room.

Room Tip: Ask for the suites in the cottage

I would like to start this review by noting that I have never felt the need to write a bad review on this site or any other but was so appalled by the quality of the service at this hotel/ restaurant that I felt compelled to do something.

We originally visited Holbeck Ghyll on 15 October 2011 to book our wedding reception in the “private dining room”. It transpired that the private dining room was actually a conference room due to undergo renovations. We were assured that all work would be complete by March 2012 at the latest and that the newly equipped kitchen attached to the “soon to be beautiful private dining room”, would specifically cater for private dining and would be “state of the art”. As our reservation was for September 2012 (i.e. almost a year's notice) we were informed that the works would be completed long before our reception and would not be a problem.

Sample menus were sent to us in November and in early December we received an email stating “I am delighted to confirm that the new venue is slowly nearing completion. I am hoping most elements of this new room will be confirmed towards the end of December / early January.” We emailed last week to sort accommodation for a couple of the guests joining the reception.

In reply to our e-mail regarding the accomodation we recieved a response stating, contrary to all previous information, that the private dinning room will not be ready in time for September and that Holbeck Ghyll would not be able to host our wedding reception (unless we are willing to pay for all guests to stay for a minimum of 2 nights at a minimum rate of approx £300 a night plus the cost of dinner for each person). I just cried and still cannot quite believe that a hotel that holds itself out as being 5* can treat customers (particularly ones discussing their wedding reception) like this. We would been fully prepared to arrange an alternative or back up venue had Holbeck Ghyll informed us at any point in the process that there was even a possibility that the works would not be completed – now we are left trying to do our absolutely best to find an alternative reception venue (the majority of which are now fully booked) – at the moment we really don’t know what to do.

If all that wasn’t enough, to top things off the hotel has not even had the decency to respond to our email expressing our distress at the cancellation which is, frankly, totally unacceptable – hence this review.

In the interests of fairness we should mention that the food at Holybeck Ghyll was very good on our visit, which is what prompted us to book it in the first place. However, our experience with the wedding reception means we could never recommend Holybeck Ghyll as a venue for a significant event/special occasion if this is how customers are treated.

We are truly sorry for the distress that has been caused. I am fully aware of your email and apologise unreservedly for our tardy response. I have asked our Business Development Manager to call you today. We were all under the impression that the area would have been re developed by the end of January. As soon as it became clear that this was not the case we felt it was correct to contact you. I am terribly sorry for the way we carried it out. I hope that after we speak today we can find a way forward. Once again, I am very sorry for any distress that we have caused.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew McPherson

Chose this place for the views, primarily, and was not dfisappointed. The lodge was perfect and must have one of the best views of Windemere available. The service was fantastic and we enjoyed a fabulous vegetarian dinner...many thanks to all the staff who made my wife's birthday treat so memorable

Room Tip: Lodge overlooking lake (Ms Tiggy Winkle block!) was amazing
