Holbeck Ghyll Country House

I stayed here with my boyfriend for one just night during March (I believe they usually have a two night minimum but happened to have a room free for just one night, so it's worth checking!). I loved everything about our stay and will definitely return.

The hotel has the perfect location with amazing views of the lake. It's a very short walk (through fields) down to the lake and from there about a 30 minute walk to Ambleside. All fo the public rooms in the hotel - the dining rooms and lounges - are comfortable and have great views and the terrace is also lovely (bit cold still during our stay but would be lovely to sit out in warmer months!) We didn't use the spa so I can't comment on it.

Our room had a great lake view and was very comfortable. Little things such as decent proper coffee and nice toiletries also made our stay feel very luxurious. Our bathroom was also large and the bath (which had jacuzzi jets) was great.

We had dinner and breakfast at Holbeck Ghyll during our stay and were very very happy with both meals. Drinks in the lounge before dinner was very relaxing and we really enjoyed the pace of the meal as well as the delicious food. We weren't waiting long for any course but also had plenty of time to chat and enjoy each course. The wine list was also great - so much choice and we had a lovely bottle of wine for about £30, plenty of choice at that price too. The food was absolutely amazing - everything on the menu was very appealing and we loved every course at dinner as well as lovely cooked breakfast the next day.

What really made this a great break was the staff - everyone we met and dealt with was very friendly and helpful, and genuinely interested in making sure that we enjoyed our stay. That really helped!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 20 - great lake view.

We recently stayed at Holbeck Ghyll to celebrate our honeymoon. From initially booking our break over the phone to checking out on the last day the staff were fantastic. We stayed in the Beatrix Potter suite which was lovely and very comfortable. The hotel was clean and the food well deserving of its Michelin star. We both enjoyed relaxing treatments at the spa. Overall a fantastic place to stay. Many thanks to all the staff, especially Andrew the manager.

This was our second stay at Holbeck Ghyll, although we have eaten at the restuarant on a number of occasions. A most enjoyable stay, the staff are particularly friendly and listened carefully to dietary requirement when confirming the booking. The rooms are of a good size although the only slight complaint would be that the duvet was very warm.. The restaurant experience is an absolute delight from start to finish, meriting the well deserved Michelin Star. Pre dinner drinks and canapes are taken in the lounge whilst perusing the menu. The wine list is second to none and the waiters are exceedingly knowledgeable around the menu/wine list as you would expect. Following a first class dining experience (the food just gets better and better!) coffee and petit fours are taken in the lounge area. The service in the restaurant is always very professional and attentive. The next day commenced with an excellent full English and whilst my partner enjoyed a reflexology session in the Spa - I managed to tick off a few more Wainwrights. A delightful hotel and a particularly relaxing winter break. We will be back again, when funds permit. This is without doubt our favourite luxury hotel.

This was our second visit and we were not disappointed. The staff were excellent from meeting us at the car park to leaving today. Everything was perfect, the room, the view, the food and the service. We felt very at home and relaxed. A perfect winter break.

The hotel is situated in the country, so a car is essential if you don't want to taxi into the town.

On arrival, we crisped our way up the long drive and were greeted by amazingly friendly and courteous staff, which continued throughout our stay.

Decor is certainly not modern or contemporary but that I guess is the character of the property. It was a difficult call whether our room needed refurbishment “because it was dated”, or whether it was nostalgic and had fabulous character “because it was dated”. In any event it was clean and had all amenities required, including some nice welcoming touches.

Views were amazing, the food divine and the entire stay totally relaxing.

The modern Spa was an added plus, albeit in reality for those not wanting treatments it is purely a sauna and steam room.

In summary, there are lots of modern contemporary hotels around and if you like that style you will be disappointed; but if you want amazing service, fine food, excellent views and a warm cosy friendly environment you will not be disappointed.

We did not stay at the hotel but went for dinner to celebrate our anniversary. We have previously stayed at Holbeck and just booked for dinner several times whilst staying elsewhere. This is mainly because we have 2 dogs and although dog friendly it's £25 per dog for 1 night.

Dinner was excellent, but......... Our booking was arrival 20.30hrs for 21.00hrs dining. We did arrive early as we wanted to sit and relax and enjoy a glass of champagne or 2, service was very slow and we were sat in the lounge for 10 mins before a drink order was taken. We were given the a la carte menu but as it was a special occassion we were interested in possibly having the gourmet menu with wines. It had stated on the website the gourmet menu was available until 9pm. My husband queried this and we were told they had run out! We were slightly dissapointed and surprised that a restaurant of this standard would "run out!" on a Saturday evening. We did rather think that because the service had been so slow and we were approaching 9pm the gourmet menus were purposefully not offered. Either way not the best start.

Service of drinks when seated in the dining room was slow and we found ourselves wishing our wine to arrive, we had already been seated in the dining room another 10mins before our wine arrived. Bread had been offered and eaten and amuse bouche had been served. I personally feel the wine should be waiting for you as you are seated and surely this is the reason for taking the order with the dinner choice. At no point in the evening did anyone check we were happy with our dinner which I thought was unusual and not good customer care.

Overall despite the above we had a lovely evening as were determined to do so but I did come away with the feeling that the service could definitely have been better which is a shame as the food was excellent but the service is letting the side down. There are similar restaurants in the South Lakes which we have dined at recently and found customer service to be far better.

Stayed at this property for 1 night. Front of house staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was just what you'd imagine for this kind of property- floral prints, antique furniture (extremely comfy bed!). Turndown service came complete with a hot water bottle placed under your sheets- nice little touch!
The meal in the restaurant was very good. Food portions were small but I suppose that's what you get with fine dining. Breakfast was good but service was slow and they weren't particularly quick to re set the tables (although it was busy). The hotel itself is perfect if you want a really quiet break.
Pretty hotel, lovely gardens and amazing views
