“A few days here with the dog”
Reviewed 8 July 2012

We chose this hotel as I had wanted to stay here for many years due to the mitchilin award plus they welcomed dogs. I was immediately impressed with both people I spoke to on the phone when booking and their delight with us bringing the dog really left me feeling excited about going. We stayed in Lodge 2 (pictured on the internet) and it was just like the picture. However the picture did not do the view of the lake justice. It is awesome! I had read on trip adviser someone complaining about the lodge rooms being like chalet style (not a good way) but personally I thought they were lovely. what is good about the lodge is the rooms are the best view of the lake just because of the way they are situated plus it was nice to have a breath of fresh air back to the room after supper. Lodge 2 is also on the upper level and therefore a flat walk from the car to the room rather than lodge 5 where you go down steps to get to it. Room is large and pleasant but not awesome - it does need an update and new bathroom as it is a bit dated but then I am fussy. Would love to resdesign it. Restaurant is fabulous and the food is very worthy of their 1 star. We enjoyed sitting in the lounge for pre dinner drinks and the canapes (which were delicious) and ordering meal then being taken into restaurant. Everything is well prepared and beautifully presented and staff take care putting plates perfectly down which I love to ensure it is just right for you. They even moved us when we didn't like our table with genuine care to our needs. Staff are friendly but not over familar and they clearly love dogs as all made a point to come over and say hello in an evening when we brought him into main house for coffee and petit feurs. Grounds are nice and really enjoyed the 5/10 mins walk down to lake shore. We would have marked it excellent but bits in our room let it down like the cold water tap missng its C and it does need more money spending on it for level of hotel it is. Please do and it would be the best room ever!! Well worth a visit

Room Tip: Lodge rooms are best for view of lake. Miss Potter Suite in my view looked very open as when we walk...

Dear Joanne

We did love your dog... and thanks for writing a nice review. We are going around all of our rooms, updating them and freshening them up but the suite you stayed in hasn't yet had the TLC Brush! Following your review I will look at bringing the update forward and we have addressed the couple of the minor issues that you mentioned. Thanks for that.

That said, you were kind to spend the time reviewing us; come back and see us again soon.

Yours sincerely

Andrew

With its glorious setting and beautiful grounds, Holbeck Ghyll is a lovely hotel to visit. We had a great experience during the few days we were there with delicious food, a comfortable lodge room, marvellous spa treatments and above all terrific staff who make the atmosphere very special.

Attended a wedding ceremony here coupled with an overnight stay. This is just a wonderful place to stay. Everything was superb - the hotel,it's grounds, the rooms, the food, the staff - all first class. If you can find fault here consider yourself to be a very picky person.Definitely worth the cost.Well placed for visiting all the Lake District 'hot spots' but nicely secluded and peaceful. The attached Spa offers a good selection of services. No wonder Renee Zellweger stayed here when making the film 'Miss Potter'. We will definitely return

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a lake view - just amazing!

Thank you so much for such a great review. We have just had a fabulous wedding here at Holbeck - you must have been part of the great bunch of family and friends that came. We certainly enjoyed looking after you all. You are quite local so make sure you pop in for afternoon tea on the terrace soon! Best wishes Andrew.

I stayed at Holbeck Ghyll for one night with my boyfriend a couple of months ago. The whole experience was blissful. Our room was in The Lodge and had its own little terraced garden area with amazing views over Windermere and the fells. We found a mini box of HG truffles in the room, along with a decanter of damson gin.
Dinner was amazing - from the canapes in the lounge to the long, lingering three courses in the restaurant. It's easy to see why they've held a Michelin Star for 12 years.
The service was spot on - staff chatted if you made conversation yet were discreet and there was no pressure from the sommelier to choose the most expensive wine or anything like that.
If you want to do Holbeck Ghyll properly you should hire their walking guide for the day and explore the fells, return for afternoon tea on the terrace or by the fire and then indulge in a spa treatment.

Room Tip: Get one with a lake view - it's stunning.

The hotel rooms are elegantly decorated. The room I stayed in had soft beds, a fireplace, and lake views. The food was exceptional. The service was wonderful, too. I went hiking and running in the nearby hills and it was spectacular (the scenery is so green!). I have absolutely nothing negative to say about our stay.

I went with a friend, but now I want to return with my husband next summer!

Two tips:
-- If you want to go to the spa, book in advance. They get booked up.
-- It's not a great place to stay if you don't have a car or driver lined up. Not much you can walk to.

Thank you for your honest reveiw. I must say though, you were a little mean to leave us with the rain - you could have taken that back to California with you! In all seriousness, thank you for your review, and we do hope to see you back when you have had your fill of Californian Sunshine!

Overlooking Winderemere from many of the rooms the earliest part of the house has some super fixtures and fittings, especially the electrical ones. The £160.00 offer was not available to a phone call but was booked OK on line. The room not a favoured lake view but overlooking the hills at the side was fine, well equipped especially the immaculate Villeroy & Boch fitted bathroom.
Dinner, after some drinks and nibbles outside on a warm sunny evening, was a fairly usual Michelin one star affair with pleasant enough service. Breakfast is part buffet and part to order for the hot dishes and very good. A very pleasant stay and well worth a visit.

Rooms - Got upgraded to the Madisson house. It was a lovely cottage with amazing views and a private garden (too bad we couldn't use the hot tub in the garden because of the rain!).

Service - all the staff was very helpful and nice. Went out f their way to accommodate special requests. Just what you'd expect from a good hotel!

Loved the managers dog! :)

Food wasn't great for vegetarians and provsion of pots and pans in the cottage's kitchen would have made even better!
