“Not Worth the Money”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2010

We have just returned from a stay at Holbeck Ghyll Country House, first I must say the location is lovely with fantastic views. The staff were very attentive.
We spent two nights in the lake district.
We chose this hotel because we were looking for something very special because it was our first weekend away without the kids for years.
Our room was in the lodge £390 PER NIGHT. I think that this price was all for the view. We had two single beds that had been put together and you fell down the middle of them.
Cheap coffee in the room like travel lodge.
The room was nothing special. Apart from the view.
The food was quiet nice. Michelin Star rated. Posh portions and very well presented but needed a sandwich later in the evening.
£10 for a pimms.

The previous night we had stayed at the Waterhead Hotel in Ambleside. It was half the price and fantastic! A very large room with king bed. Complmentary fruit, water, gingerbread and cafetiere with real ground coffee. Contemporary style. Fab bathroom and lovely food. We wished that we had stayed two nights there.
We just think that it's a very overpriced place to stay and came away feeling disappointed becaused we felt cheated that the cheaper hotel was better.

Dear EnglandCastle,

Thank you for your comments. I am happy to confirm that we are revisiting our coffee and tea offering so that we are able to upgrade the bedroom facilities; when this has been done I am certain you would appreciate the changes that we have made. I am very sorry that the Zip-link beds were not joined in the middle; I have spoken at length with my housekeeper and she joins me in sending our apologies. As I mentioned in my reply to your personal email that you also sent, should you wish to return soon to experience the improvements that we are putting in place, please contact me directly I would gladly assist in making your booking.

With all good wishes

Andrew

Just returned home from a 3 night stay and it was perfect, we stayed in the Miss Potter Suite, stunning views, superb food, lovely attentive staff and a bed to die for! Spa treatments were amazing. Total luxury and relaxation. One of our top 3 hotels ever! Felt sad to leave. Now trying to find an excuse to go back again!

location stunning/service very good/ food very good ...nouvelle cuisine/
loved the food but would not like to eat it for a whole week. a bit fussy but fantastic for
a weekend when you want a special treat.
a bit expensive as I do have some observations.
in the morning the water in the shower was not very hot probably everybody using the bathrooms at the same time and so we had a luke warm shower. ( in the evening the water was hot)
Door handles and doors creaky and noisy.
Wooden dining tables with placemats. I think white tablecloths suit better in this kind of hotel/ rsetaurant. Would stay here again.
Very good foreign staff in dinig room..Estonian/spanish/french

My husband and I have visited Holbeck Ghyll on various occasions and we continue to be impressed time and time again. I always like to stay somewhere luxurious, with wonderful food and surroundings. This hotel has it all - divine Michelin star dining, stunning lake and mountain views, wonderful staff, superb health spa, fabulous bedrooms and the general ambience of the hotel is totally relaxing. We will definitely return.

We had the most wonderful weekend at Holbeck Ghyll. As we drove up the steep drive I could feel the work and M6 stresses melting away, and I stayed relaxed for the entire weekend.

Our room was lovely, looking out down the hill towards the lake, with a beautiful big bed and a well equipped bathroom. It was a hot weekend and the room was a little warm, but we simply opened the window to catch the breeze and the room soon cooled down. We slept very well both nights despite the heat.

The food, as would be expected for a Michelen starred establishment, was excellent, and the wait staff were superb, particularly the wine waiter. There are two dining rooms and we got to eat in both during our stay, both were lovely.

Although we had a wonderful time in the summer, I really want to go back in the winter as I think it will be even better cosying up in the lounge while the British winter rages outside - it's that sort of place. We will definitely be back!

This Country House which is set in the hills overlooking Lake Windermere was absolutely the best!! The scenery was fabulous, the staff was top notch, the room was comfie & alluring and the food was out of this world!! If you are looking for and wonderfully quiet getaway, this is it. I will not hesitate to stay here again and will most definately reccommend it to all who ask.

Having stayed at Holbeck on two occasions last year and again last month. We rarely stay at the same hotel twice, always looking for a differant destination and hotel.

Holbeck is differant, the quiet relaxed, sharp service, you are never left long but at the same time neverfeel rushed. The gentle smile from the waitress, the polite conversation, the location taht has the most beautiful aspectmakes Holbeck difficultv to beat.

Dinning well now thats a story on its own, david the Michelin star chef produces some of the best and tastiest meals we have had the pleasure to enjoy, constantly, and thats not easy.

We have been so impressed with the hard work that must constantly go into every meal, real dedication, with one aim our enjoyment.

Without name dropping we have had the opertunity to dine at some of the top hotels Paris Dubi and other countries often at two star and more, but for pure real dinning enjoyment David has the edge in my book. Will be back the end of August. Thank you Holbeck
