We went Miller Howe for dinner. Excellent location, nice gardens and view. Appetisers & startres were good, though they tried to create sophisticated main dishes and not really succeeded.

Lovely relaxed stay in this beautiful Arts & Crafts house. Felt like staying with friends who could not do enough for you! The room, whilst not huge was luxuriously decorated with huge comfortable bed and good sized en-suite. Comfortable lounges and conservatory or terrace, with views straight over Windermere, for drinks/afternoon teas, etc as and when you wanted. Evening meals to die for with modern British cuisine using first class locally sourced produce. Extensive breakfasts to cover all appetites. We were supplied with a wonderful packed lunch which amply provided for a full days hiking on the fells.
The whole stay left us feeling relaxed and cossetted.

Room Tip: Lakeside views with balconies on the top floor are well worth it.

The location of the hotel is great, 20 minute walk from Windermere or a 2 minute cab ride (less than £4) from the station.
Hotel has loads of character and the views over lake windermere are absolutely stunning. We had the 3 double rooms on the top floor and they were all very comfortable - ours had a fab free standing bath which was to die for when we came back from a long walk. toilet was rather temperamental on flushing though.

We had the dinner, bed and breakfast package for 2 nights, not cheap at £140 per person per night but my god the food was to die for. Absolutely stunning and the service was fantastic. Really helpful and friendly but not intrusive.

We didn't have a car and were only there for the weekend, so restricted ourselves to local walks and boat trips around lake windermere and despite a torrential downpour on the saturday afternoon, we had a truly great weekend.

Would definitely recommend the hotel (and already have done) to anyone wanting great hospitality in stunning surroundings

Firstly the positives - this is a wonderful hotel in a magical setting, with breathtaking views and the most gorgeous gardens to explore. We stayed in the Windermere room with our 21 month old which was spacious, with incredible lake views, a nice bathroom and a large balcony. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The food (both breakfast and dinner) was also first class.
Personal touches included a cot with nice clean linen and blankets, an afternoon tea which was prepared for our baby after the usual hours when we returned to the hotel late in the afternoon. The staff also allowed us to use the wine fridge to store her milk as there was no fridge in the room....however we were never told where the fridge was, I can understand why but this meant we couldn't get to the milk early in the morning as there were no staff around and thankfully we didn't need milk during the night.

However, whilst the hotel say that they welcome young children it's very much within quite strict quidelines so children are welcome but if they make noise they are expected to be removed. I can understand this completely, the hotel wishes to create a peaceful and calm ambience, but in practice this made the weekend a very tense experience as a parent, constantly feeling the need to apologise and explain. Dinner was served from 6.45pm, it is entirely possible to take a baby monitor to the dinig room as the hotel feels very small and safe and we did do this but next time I think we will find a hotel which is truly child friendly. The baby monitor only worked in certain parts of the dining room so we did have to switch tables.

I would thoroughly recommend Miller Howe for a romantic break for couples and we may well return for a future wedding anniversary, alone!

Really lovely hotel, quirky and charming. Much nicer than the faceless chains, you will be glad you chose it. Almost a home from home - in my dreams! Even if you can't stay, just book the afternoon tea but allow plenty of time to explore the grounds and relax in the lovely rooms and comfy chairs. It's a real treat, the food is delicious and the view is spectacular.

Third visit to Miller Howe over a period of 19 years. Though not quite up to the standard when John Tovey was in charge, Miller Howe is still one of THE lakeland hotels for a relaxing break with top quality food, excellent service and friendly atmosphere. My wife and I enjoyed an excellent break, afternoon tea to die for, a fabulous dinner with excellent (good value) wines and the perfect Cumbrian breakfast to finish the stay!!. Food and drink aside, the hotel provides comfort and understated service rather than formality, and is to be commended on this, as it gives it some individuality. We were on a deal and stayed in the cottage in the grounds, which was fine but would have been expensive at full price.
I can appreciate other contributors complaining about its location if they had not already been told that it was down several flights of steps in the garded. For us this was not an issue at all.
Miller Howe also offers excellent afternoon tea, and dinner deals off-season, and these are a steal, and an excellent way to `judge` the hotel without actually staying overnight.

Last minute booking and we had the last room available in one of the cottage rooms which was a little small but very nice decor, and well maintained. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious as was the breakfast next morning. We would certainly go back and would stay in the main hotel. the views are wonderful.
