“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

We booked this hotel for a 1 night stay over the bank holiday weekend.
We had a quick look around while we waited to check in and the hotel was old country house in style with lots of old wooden furniture and sofas. Some might say it looks dated but we really liked it.
The room was a good size, again, with lots of old furniture. We also had a jacuzzi bath and a really big balcony.
We had dinner in the hotel restaurant which was really good. The dessert was fab. The service was also fine.
The only issue we had was with the amouse Bouche. It had egg and wild mushroom in it and was neither hot or cold and had a kind of jelly in it. I realise this is not a good explanation of it but no words could describe how bad it was. We mentioned this when checking out. That's the only negative thing we experienced.
In summary, a really nice stay in a comfortable hotel with character.

So glad you enjoyed your recent stay with us. We have tried to create a haven with stunning views. Apologies for the amuse Boucher which was obviously not to your taste. We do hope you come again soon

We stayed for four nights at Miller Howe with another couple.
Our rooms were comfortable and the meals were exceptional. On the one day when heavy rain and fog prevented any excursions we were more than happy to while away the day in the sitting room and enjoy the spectacular views and afternoon tea. We stayed in they Windermere room and appreciated the balcony and expansive views.

We stayed at Miller Howe for 3 nights recently (April 2014) with our 3 kids (6, 4, 2). We came from 1 night at Low Wood Bay where we immediately left the following day as we felt security was completely inappropriate for young kids (there are no distinctions there between the hotel pathway and the busy A road, our son nearly got smashed over by a car!).

we stayed in their cottage in the garden. It has two bedroom and two living room which was perfect for our 2 older son and our baby in a cot in their living room. The cottage itself is nice, although decoration is slightly outdated. Whether its their choice (was the same at Low Wood Bay) or a need of refurbishment did not matter as we spent most of our time outside. Beds are probably on the smaller side of the scale, and cleanliness not extremely sharp. But given our experience (and price) at Low Wood Bay, I would definitely rate this one higher.

Staff was extremely helpful to accommodate for our kids' needs. They had diner specially prepared by the chef around 18h00, and they were always extremely nice. We never had the feeling that we were not welcomed as we were one of the only couple with kids (definitely the only one with 3).

The hotel garden is secluded and safe. We did let our kids wander around after breakfast, and never had any issues. The garden is relatively large, and the cottage secluded from the rest of the hotel so that they would not make any noises.

The cottage also had its own terrace for us to enjoy snacks with them in the afternoon on our own.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for a family stay in Windermere. We really enjoyed it, and the view from the hotel terrace where we had drinks every night is amazing.

My boyfriend and I were hoping for a relaxing night away, however we were very disappointed with the experience we had here - two stars only for the view/location.
We booked over the phone and were told the only room available would be in the cottage, which they had no photos of on the website, but they assured was decorated to the same high standard.
When we arrived the front of house seemed as if they would rather be anywhere but there and almost as if we were inconveniencing them! We were shown to the cottage which had a separate entrance and, whilst small, looked lovely and had great views. On closer inspection many items in the room were in need of repair or replacing and the bed looked tiny.
After leaving the hotel for the day we returned to the lounge area later and asked for a drink - again this seemed to be a huge request for the very miserable looking lady serving us. Several times we asked what the dinner menu would be for the evening and she mumbled something as she walked away from us.
Dinner itself was nice, amazing views, but definitely not worth the prices if you weren't there on a dinner, bed and breakfast rate. The young waiter who seated us was lovely and not of the same grumpiness as the others. We skipped dessert (meaning we hadn't used all of our food allowance).
Returning to the room we realised just how tiny the bed was, I'm 5ft 4 and my ankles were on the edge, my boyfriend of 6ft therefore had an extremely odd and unpleasant nights sleep! Had they told us the unusual size of the bed we would have definitely looked elsewhere as a good nights sleep was something we valued most on a relaxing night away.
On paying the bill the next morning we mentioned the bed size and no apology was given. Our drinks were extra on the bill even though we hadn't used up all our budget.
Overall very miserable service by all but one member of staff, overpriced-nothing-special food, and a dated, uncomfortable room.

Room Tip: Don't book the cottage rooms if you're taller than 4ft.

Many thanks for your review. I don't really understand your comments about miserable staff as we are all very passionate about Miller Howe but I will certainly investigate. Glad you enjoyed the food which we believe is INCREDIBLY good value. Our bed in the cottage is a standard Queen size bed so I really don't understand your comments. I also checked all the furnishings which were all perfectly acceptable. We obviously are not the type of hotel for you.

The rooms are beautiful and clean. The food was wonderful and the staff were willing to accomodate our preferences.. Nige, James and Caroline were so fun and informative.
Marvelous view of lake. Price very reasonable and close to shopping.

We got married in the conservatory overlooking the hotel gardens and lake windermere. The wedding breakfast was delicious, I still think about the bacon bread rolls! Again with great views. The service was excellent throughout. This is a great place to get married and we couldn't have been happier with our choice of venue.

My wife booked us in for a night at the Miller Howe for a sneaky weekend break in the Lakes. First impressions weren't great as the exterior of the early 20th century building looks a bit neglected and could certainly do with an overhaul. On entering the building we were met by somewhat grumpy staff but when they showed us to our room a huge sense of relief descended upon me as it was a nice spacious room that was nicely decorated and offered fine views of Windermere. As it was March when we visited we didn't make use of the balcony but I'm sure it would have been nice to sit out there if it had been a bit warmer. Breakfast in the conservatory was also very pleasant. Again, there a tables outside that would be nice in the summer months. We got a superior room (the Troutbeck) for £140 for the night which was pretty good value. I'd have been disappointed if I'd paid the rack rate of £240 but for what we paid it was very good.
