“A wonderful well organised hotel in a fantastic position”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

We arrived much too early to check in ...so we decided to have coffee before checking out Windermere

On returning at 3 pm we checked in ..our room was on the top floor with amazing views of lake Windermere ...

The room was beautifully appointed with a stock of bath oils and quality towels

The total tranquility was lovely with not a sound outside ...if your a light sleeper this is the place ...

Dinner was excellent...a well thought out and extremely tasty dishes ...I started with a fish dish followed by venison..my wife enjoyed the lamb.

Wines are good if a little pricey

It's a pretty restaurant with lovely views of the fields leading down to the lake

Staff are knowledgable and friendly

Our only complaint was the shower in our room was inoperative but that did not in any way spoil an utterly and enjoyable and memorable stay

Do try it

We booked a short break for our wedding anniversary, through Secret Escapes. We were delighted!! The hotel met our high expectations in every respect. Our room overlooking Windermere Lake was beautifully comfortable, with the best of linen, turned down each evening with fresh towels of excellent quality. All of our meals were just so tasty and beautifully presented, and the quality of the wines for price were very good and served at correct temperatures. The table linen and settings were very pleasing. My husband's gluten free diet was accommodated without compromising the excellent flavours of the dishes. The staff were friendly and helpful. What more could you want? IF you want minimalist modern, then not for you but if you want the best of British style then just perfection.

We arrived at the hotel last month with high expectations, we have been to the hotel before when it was owned by different people. The hotel itself is nice it has a lovely view, the decor is slightly tired but is nice. Our room was really small especially for the amount we paid but it was clean and in good condition, lovely toiletries. You wouldn't have been able to fit a travel cot in our room. Our main disappointment was the food - the menu was promising and we were excited to eat there but the actual food was edible but not worth the money and certainly not really nice as it had been in the past. The foie gras was rubbery and the food was just okay. Again after a night of slamming doors the breakfast was small but nice just not a lot of it. The service was good when we arrived but not in the restaurant - certain guests seemed to be getting privileges and one couples breakfast was literally twice the size of ours and the other guests. We had to ask for our drinks order twice as it did not arrive.

Overall a nice hotel to stay, not worth the money though but the restaurant was not worth using. We will not be returning and we have not recommended.

We visited this hotel to mark a special occasion. The hotel is ideally located with well tended gardens. The room we were allocated was overlooking the lake with beautiful and stunning views and had a balcony. Security to the balcony door was virtually non existent, hopefully it would never be tested. The decor was dated but traditional, the room and bathroom was spotlessy clean. We were given a warm welcome from the lady in reception and given a tour of the downstairs rooms. Dinner was included in our break and was eagerly looked forward to, each course was beautifully presented but tiny portions, some of the food was difficult to determine how it complimented the other ingredients, however the ingredients were fresh and well cooked. For the charges on the menu sadly I don't feel it justified the results. The hotel staff in general were very polite and eager to serve. The beds were extremely comfortable and linens and towels of extremely good quality. The bedside lights are too dim to read a book with at night so you need some of the other lights on to do this. Would I stay there again, possibly, there are many really good establishments in the lakes and whilst this one is good just didn't quite do it for me.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the lake as road noise is intrusive from the other side of the hotel.

This has to be one of the most beautiful locations in the world! The scenery is breathtaking. We had a lake view room, quite small but everything we needed, the home made cookies were a lovely touch and delicious. The room and balcony could do with a bit of tlc but didn't detract from our stay. We had dinner and breakfast and both were superb, the service was spot on, we can't wait to go back, for longer this time!

Wherever we went in this hotel we continued to be amazed by the views. From the bar, the garden, our room and the terrace, the fells looked amazing. But the view of the sunset from the dining room over the lake was not to be missed. Helpful staff made our stay with extended family party including my disabled brother in law very relaxing and there was no trouble when we returned a dish we thought wasn't up to their standard. The food was excellent and we will be returning.

I came here with my partner for a night away and the whole experience was just amazing! The hotel is in the perfect location overlooking the lake with stunning gardens and an amazing landscape. We had our evening meal in the hotel and the food was absolutely outstanding! The presentation was stunning and the taste was even better! We had pre-drinks in the room next door in front of a crackling fire and the whole atmosphere was just perfect! Possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in, I had such an amazing nights sleep! We had breakfast in the morning before checkout and the breakfast was lovely. There is a menu to order from and everything looked yummy! I would recommend this hotel 100%, it is absolutely amazing and the people here will go out of their way to look after you!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Rothwaite room and it had such an amazing view!
