“Beautiful retreat. Nick and Nicki Oliver”
Reviewed 4 May 2012

We love the lake district and visit every year. This occasion was particularly special as it was a surprise for my husband, Nick's 40th birthday. We stayed for 3 nights and had the most amazing time. Caroline and Jonathan were delightful and made us feel welcome and took the time to talk and be interested in all their guests. It is very comfortable and homely, yet elegant and unique. The room was tastefully decorated and the bed was very comfortable. I made use of the spa bath every day! Pure luxury. We also enjoyed time in the lounge playing back gammon and had the most exquisite food in the restaurant on the evening of Nick's Birthday. Caroline had decorated the table tastefully with table confetti which made it all the more personal and the chef wrote 'Happy Birthday' on his dessert plate! All of ths will give us many years of smiling when we remenise on our time at Cedar Manor. Thanks to Caroline and Jonathan for making their hotel a little piece of heaven!

Room Tip: All the rooms are different and individual and all looked delightful. We stayed in Wansfell an execu...

It was a true pleasure to discover five star accommodations and five star service at one hotel in the Lake District. My wife and I spent nine wonderful days at the Cedar Manor Hotel in Windermere and experienced both.

First the accommodations. We stayed in the Coach House Suite. This newly renovated space has won international design awards. It is truly exceptional. From the high tech sound systems to the gorgeous bathroom with amazing bubble tub to the use of led lighting throughout this suite is one-of-a-kind. You need to visit their website and watch the video to truly appreciate what they've accomplished. In addition to the bedroom and bath on the first floor there is an upper floor with a lounge, dinning room with kitchenette and another full bath. There is a separate entrance to this floor allowing room service to come in early and set up breakfast if the guest so desires. We didn't take advantage of this service because we enjoyed breakfast in the restaurant so much. I've included some pictures to give some idea of the details of the suite. I believe it has to be one of the best, if not the best accommodation in the Lake District.

Of course great accommodations are only half the story. Fortunately the level of service matched the level of the suite. Our hosts, Jonathan and Caroline, we're not only gracious and accommodating, they were just fun to be with. They run an exceptional hotel. Every morning we enjoyed a great breakfast in the intimate dining room and shared experiences with other guests about activities completed or planned. It was an enjoyable start to the day. Caroline always has a smile and her personality is reflected in the beauty of the landscaping and the fresh flowers throughout the hotel. She and Jonathan consistently deliver an outstanding experience to their guests.

The hotel is located one block from the center of town and has a very scenic footpath to the lake shore right next to the hotel driveway. The Lake District is very beautiful. It has outstanding landscapes, abundant opportunities for outdoor activities, and a rich history dating back to Roman times. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience. We definitely plan to return as this is now one of our favorite vacation spots thanks to Caroline and Jonathan.

Room Tip: The Coach House Suite is highly recommended.

My husband surprised me for our 20th wedding anniversary with a 3 night weekend stay in the Coach House suite, having chosen the hotel and suite based on Trip Advisor recommendations. My husband seldom sees me lost for words but I certainly was when Jonathan led us down the side of the hotel to the detached suite at the rear. The two storey suite is exquisite, with a modern and luxurious decor, a huge comfortable bed, and as for the bathroom - WOW is the only expression for it. I wanted to take it home! Jonathan and Caroline are the perfect hosts, welcoming and attentive and take pride in providing a relaxing environment for their guests, with attention to detail and a personal touch that sets it apart. As many others have already commented, we can only agree and heap even more praise on the talented chefs - the food is simply amazing. They provide a wide range of options for breakfast from the 'full English' to American pancakes and I especially enjoyed the home made preserves. We took breakfast in our suite one morning and everything was piping hot and on time. We had dinner each night - there were five or six options for each course, preceded by a tiny taste of soup and wonderful fresh baked breads. The hotel is perfectly situated for a relaxing break and there is a little path next to the hotel that takes you right down to the lakeside ... a wonderful spot with no crowds (so don't tell anyone!) Thank you for a wonderful weekend - we will be back!

Room Tip: The coach house suite is amazing... with a bathroom that has to be seen to be believed.

We were lucky enough to get a voucher deal for our stay which made it even more enjoyable.
The food is outstanding and outweighs the minor niggles we had with the room. I really can't stress, though, just how good the food is. All cooked from scratch on site and with daily changes. Everything cooked to absolute perfection and with the greatest imagination and flair.
The owners are pleasant and courteous hosts and very knowledgeable about the local area and walks to take.
The niggles? Well, although the room was comfortable it is quite small and the furniture, though obviously high quality is very dark to the point of being oppressive. The en-suite bathroom is also pretty cramped and I couldn't actually walk into it without turning sideways as the door wasn't wide enough for my shoulders! There is a spacious bath, but it's so noisy it's not at all relaxing. Worst of all, our room was right above the bar, so we got the music from its recessed speakers played quite clearly to us. Never very loudly and it went off at a reasonable time, but a minor irritation.
The wi-fi connection was so slow I never managed to download as much as an e-mail, though I wasn't too bothered about this.
Don't expect the views you'll see on the website. I don't know where they were taken but it wasn't near the house.
Those are the niggles and, let's be honest, it's what most people want to hear about, but I stress that they are minor. We'd love to go again and have no hesitation in recommending it to you.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted that you enjoyed our food, our team of Chef's will be very pleased to read such good comments.
The niggles - We did indeed have an issue with the recessed speakers, which we tackled this Spring and so far, there has been no more music playing through the ceiling. We do apologise if this did disturb you, we wish you had told us at the time so we could have addressed it there and then. With regards to the ensuite, we are an old building and some rooms are larger than others, with all different types and sizes of ensuites. We always recommend selecting your room via our website where you can read descriptions of each room to make sure you get one that suits you. I think the noise you refer to must have been the spa bath - unfortunately, that's a bi-product of a spa bath, which to be fair, you didn't have to turn on. You can have enjoyed a very peaceful soak!
And to the furniture, its all bespoke for each room and we use walnut in some rooms, oak in others - I guess its not going to be to everyone's liking. Its made here in Windermere by a very skilled team of furniture makers, from sustainable sources and helps us achieve our status of a Silver Award Green Tourism Hotel.
We hope that addresses the niggles, next time give us a call and we can talk through your requirements and ensure that you get a room better suited to your needs.
New menu just launched - come and try it soon!
Thanks again for taking the time to review the hotel
Best wishes

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay at Cedar Manor. We are very pleased that you found the hotel and your room to be comfortable.
Just for the benefit of Trip Advisor users - we have a small table d'Hote menu changing seasonally with a choice of 5 starters, 5-6 main courses and 5-6 desserts and cheese. We have designed the menu to include various meat, fish and vegetarian options. All our ingredients are sourced locally, where possible and everything on the menu is created by our very skilled team of Chef's.
Thank you again for reviewing your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Have just returned home after a trip to Great Britain which included a short stay in Windermere. Our choice in accommodation was Cedar Manor Hotel based on recommendations on Trip Advisor and we weren't disappointed.
Cedar Manor is a beautiful and well appointed hotel/B&B. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed. Dinner in the restaurant is a must if you stay here. The food is beautiful and the service warm and friendly. The breakfasts are also wonderful.
Our hosts made us feel at home and nothing was too much trouble for them. Cedar Manor was really a highlight of our holiday.

We enjoyed a relaxing 3 night stay at Cedar Manor, with dinner on 2 nights. Highlight of our stay was the fabulous food, both the lovely breakfasts and exceptional evening meals. Breakfasts gave a great range of options, our favorite had to be the American style pancakes - just delicious. Both evening meals were of a great standard, varied and interesting menu, beautiful presentation, fabulous flavours and generous portions - we finished each evening feeling very happy indeed.
Add to this the most comfortable beds, crisp sheets, fluffy towels, spotless room, charming hosts, attentive and efficient service and a great location - we couldn't ask for more. We would probably class ourselves as reasonably "fussy" travellers (!), but genuinely couldn't fault Cedar Manor. Thank you to Jonathan and Caroline for everything they do to make Cedar Manor such a class act.
