“Lovely Lake House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2011

We stayed at the Lake House for 3 nights in October 2011. There are only 6 rooms there and each is individually styled and furnished. Beds are large and bathrooms are well appointed. There is also a lovely lounge (with woodstove) overlooking the private 4 acre lake, Knipe Tarn, with 2 rowing boats and a pretty little jetty with a couple for chairs. There is also a very pleasant conservatory overlooking the lake and grounds.

There is a good swimming pool and an outdoor hot tub as well as pathways through the grounds. Unfortunately, disabled access to the pool, lake and paths is difficult (or impossible) but the views and the wonderful, peaceful setting can be enjoyed by everyone.

Guests at the Lake House take breakfast in the conservatory and can have afternoon tea with lovely sandwiches, cakes etc but eat dinner at Gilpin Lodge, about 5 minutes drive away. Don't worry about drinking and driving because a complementary chauffeured car is laid on to transport guests from the Lake House to Gilpin Lodge and back.

All the staff at the Lake House were very friendly and helpful and enhanced the wonderful setting of the house by their attitude.

A place to be recommended if you want a luxury break in a quiet setting - but luxury doesn't come cheaply!

We stayed with family for a few days in May 2011 at the Lake House. A few years earlier we had very much enjoyed weekends at the Gilpin Lodge itself but having read about the Lake House we were keen to try it.

Despite the Cumbria weather doing its best to wreck our bank holiday weekend, we had a wonderful stay here.

As many other reviewers will have pointed out this is like staying in a private house, with acres of private grounds including a chaming boating lake. There are only 6 bedrooms and we all loved it.

Breakfasts were the usual Gilpin stellar standard and served in the Lake House conservatory. The conservatory gives on to the kitchen and I really liked the homely sound of cake mixture being beaten (by hand - after all an electric mixer would be too noisy for the guests!) while reading in the sitting room, for example. The cakes were also delicious when tasted that afternoon!

Staff (owners and employees alike) are perfect. Very service conscious and interested in you and your stay with none of that obsequiousness: our ideal.

Evening meals are good (but definitely not as good as they were a few years ago) and taken at the Lodge. Guests at the Lake House are chauffeur driven there so it's no hassle at all.

My only criticism is that the rooms at the Lake House vary considerably in terms of size/ outlook/ bathroom quality. Although room-rates vary a bit, I don't think they really reflect the difference. We took the last 3 rooms available for the weekend and got 2 excellent rooms on the first floor and a very small room on the ground floor. If planning on staying: book ahead to get the room you want and pay the small premium for the better rooms.

We stayed last week for 3 nights in a Junior Suite. The room was fabulous, one of the best we have had over a large number of years staying in some tasty hotels, and the staff were very nice. Although we fall into 'the elderly patrons' bracket coined by the author of 'A controversial review' (by the way bottle age for wine is not necessarily a prerequisite for enjoyment), we also found the dining arrangements lacked atmosphere and therefore were not very relaxing. We were however allowed to choose from the room service menu and eat in the bar. This option was not advertised but was much more enjoyable as the food was very good, we did not have to plough through unnecessary courses on the set menu and we also had the opportunity to have interesting conversations with some of the staff. We would recommend it.
Overall, the service fell slightly short: for example, no feedback to a question on a main dish in the restaurant, a long wait for breakfast one morning followed by a very half -hearted apology. Nothing major but enough to prevent an excellent review.

Room Tip: Junior Suite was excellent

The reviews on here have always been excellent, however i wish to give a fair report based upon two visits during 2011. We stayed here in June having stayed earlier in the year. There was no special reason or occasions, other than getting away for a few nights, for our visit. We were in one of the large garden suites with a hot tub, this was just lovely but when it rained we got wet in the tub!

The bedroom was very, very spacious, the lounge area comfortable and the bathroom huge. The rooms were very modern and stylish although we did have to ask for an iron and ironing board to be brought to our room.

We stayed on a DB+B booking. Dinner was better the second time we ate here, the amuse bouche of tuna was to die for! The wine list has some good value wines with decent bottle age. My husband has coeliac's disease and this was well catered for - we some great home made bread. Breakfast was also of good quality with really tasty sausages.

We found the service was a little mechanical at times, as if the staff were just going 'through the motions', we ordered two bottles wines and the staff brought the wrong one each time - my husband had to go and point out the ones we wanted - this is just sloppy in an established of this level.

The dining room and other public area's within the hotel were very hot and stuffy. In addition the dining areas are very small and this lead to us feeling uncomfortable, we found during both of our visits that we spoke in whispers because we were able to hear the other diners conversations which led to the meal feeling strained and not as relaxed as i would expect, i would suggest some low level background music however perhaps this would not please some of the elderly returning patrons!

We felt too young (30) to be dining and staying at this property as the clientele - with respect - were much, much older than ourselves. It is our view that this hotel is trying hard to please their returning patrons, may of whom are older, by not changing anything, rather than being dynamic.

Whilst the wine list would draw us back (i say us, but mean my husband!) in the future the stuffy nature of this hotel means we will stay at alternative locations in the lakes.

This was our first visit to Gilpin Lodge following a recommendation from friends. We decided to go for a garden suite on the dinner - bed & breakfast rate. The room was exactly as you see it on the website and lived up to our expectations. The slightly disappointing aspect was that the hot tub wasn't under cover and typical of Lake District ... we had rain !!! The room was spotlessly clean, the hotel staff were friendly and chatty and provided excellent service. The food was excellent as you would expect although the menu was the same during our stay. The breakfast offered a good variety of options and it was a really fantastic way to start the day. Looking forward to our next visit.

This is the second time we have stayed at Gilpin, the first during recovery from major surgery last year. At the time we were treated almost like family and nothing was too much trouble for them. The same philosophy still runs throughout the hotel which is one of efficiency, professionalism, outstanding customer service and attention to the smallest needs of the guests. Any minor comment or constructive critisism is taken on board and addressed immediatey. The main goal of the hotel seems to be to ensure guests want for nothing and too be able to relax totally and they will do everything to make sure this is the case. Since our last visit we found that the quality of food has improved considerably however some minor inconsitencies may be the reason why they have not been awarded Michelin star which is a real shame. We learnt on our last night that they had just been awarded hotel of the year by AA which is a lot to live up to but it was very well deserved.

This hotel is one of the best that I have stayed in all over the world. The location, ambience, service, food in short everything is good.
Rooms are spacious and serene with the same tranquilising experience throughout the property. I had requested for a room near the reception and got Winster which was charming with lovely view from the window.
Hotel is located nearby Bowness village and cabs are easily available to the hotel. There are great walks available from the hotel. Food and service is excellent.
