“Fabulous lakeland oasis for any foodie”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

Gilpin Lodge is a must for any traveller looking, & willing to pay, for outstanding dining. The food is stunningly good; our waiter proudly pronounced the chef the best in Cumbria and, based on our time at Gilpin, few could argue with that accolade.

We stayed with our children who, though comfortable in smart restaurants, might have been phased by the whole experience, but the staff treated them with friendly respect and they enjoyed the whole theatre of the meal, not to mention the delicious off menu courses: canapés, intriguing pre-starters, clever pre-desserts. The kitchen happily amended the menu to suit younger tastes, but don't go expecting chicken nuggets for the kids - this food is high art.

Our rooms were delightful. The service is, without exception, impeccable; the setting - intimate country house charm; the overall experience - top notch. Sadly the weather failed to follow suit, but then again what do you expect visiting the Lakes in late autumn?!

I did a lot of research before deciding on Gilpin for a special break. Privacy was the most important quality for us, so the advice when booking a garden suite to go for Sergeant Man was spot-on. It was possible to park our car near the garden suite building, which meant we didn’t have to go through the main hotel building unless we wanted to. This gave us an ever greater sense of privacy. Hot tub on a sunny autumn afternoon very pleasant. Spacious room, comfortable bed. Tastefully decorated – terrific wallpaper. Very good breakfast – lots of choice & good quality ingredients. Pleasant & very attentive staff. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Sergeant Man garden suite is very private.

Our first visit to Gilpin Lodge certainly lived up to expectations. Our party stayed in the main house in a variety of rooms, all very different. I'm sure the Garden Suites are up a notch or two but the master and classic rooms we had did not disappoint. It was a shame maybe that the younger generation in two twin rooms arguably had better accommodation than their parents...shades of things to come! One minor quibble with plumbing should have been taken up with management at the time, but otherwise deep luxurious baths and great power showers. I don't mind the toiletries being in large containers. It means you can help yourself to as much as you want and there is less waste for the hotel. This is not the place to come for freebies!
Housekeeping was excellent and unobtrusive. Rooms were immaculate and when different pillows were requested they miraculously appeared with the turn down service.

Dining is the main event at Gilpin. Both evening meals were stunning and hugely enjoyed by my 'foodie' family who can be harsh critics. Yes the menu was the same on the second night, but the number of choices meant we could try new things, only the element of surprise was removed. Service and timing were again excellent. The quality of breakfast could not be faulted, although having it all by order and served at the table made for rather a laborious affair. The range of dining rooms create different ambiences and it may be worth choosing a style that suits you, but be aware that space for a large party is limited. We were given our own dining room which ensured privacy, but also left me feeling removed.

The hotel is in a beautiful location, easy access from main roads and well placed for all the attractions. In an area where you are spoilt for choice when it comes to luxury hotels, Gilpin Lodge deserves all the accolades it receives.

Room Tip: No two rooms are the same and be aware that pictures on the website are not up to date. Wetherlam ha...

This just became our favourite Hotel of all time.......So relaxing at the Lake House - about 1 mile from the main hotel but with only 6 suites w a Pool, Sauna and Outdoor Hot Tub by its own lake it was perfect. The staff were amazing and a credit to your hotel making sure we had a lovely weekend, from the attentive staff at the Lake House to the driver you employed to take us to the main hotel for a wonderful evening meal with lovely waiting staff and an excellent sommelier who managed to recommend a wine that suited beef (I'm sorry but i don't like red wine!) to our what felt like personal chef at the Lake House for breakfast who made my favourite breakfast of eggs Benedict cooked perfectly . Both generations of owners introduced themselves to us on different days of our 2 night stay to check we were having a good time which was also lovely. Couldn't fault a thing.........we really did not want to go home! We'll be back when we have saved up enough money to stay again.

A friendly efficient welcome, with easy check in and out.
We stayed at the Lake House, which is a 5 minute drive from the main hotel, the hotel arrange transfer between the 2 sites which is managed easily and effortless. We were the only ones staying at Lake House, which didn't matter as the first rate service made us feel very pampered.
Dinner is served at the main house, where your time for pre dinner drinks is booked, the bar is a perfect way to start the evening off, with welcoming staff and management. There is a choice of menu's one of which is a little exotic, and small portions, the other is the other extreem! but both delicious, it is a shame that the menu doesn't offer daily variations.
Overall this is a gem and we look forward to our return.

Room Tip: If you want a bath, check on booking, as we only had a shower and after a long day on the fells I wo...

Visited the Lake District in early October and stayed at the Gilpin Hotel. The hotel furnishings and rooms are top notch, as is the service and restaurant. The hotel is in a very pleasant location in the Lake District near to Lake Windermere, with its great scenery and easy-going, local towns. I hope to go back to the Gilpin at some stage in the near future.

A few years ago,(before December 2011 but this site wont let me go back further than that!) my best friend and I had a short break at Gilpin, to celebrate our 50 years of friendship.Neither of us are used to staying in Country House Hotels, (although we would like to be!) and it was a real treat. I write this now as I have only just joined Trip Advisor. Gilpin is just the most perfect hotel ever. We stayed in a wonderful Garden Room, with hot tub on the balcony, which we used frequently although the weather that December was cold and damp. The decor was beautiful, the bathroom unlike any I have used, the beds wonderfully comfy. We were both able to have full body massages in our room..The hotel was beautifully and tastefully decorated for Christmas. I loved the fact that we could see Llamas from our balcony! And the food! I have eaten in some famous Michelin Star restaurants but the food at Gilpin is surely worthy of 2-3 stars! Impeccable service, discreet but friendly, nothing too much trouble for the Cunliffe family. When I win the lottery I am going to stay in the Lake House! The following year I took my brother there for a wonderful afternoon tea in a warm and cosy lounge in November, great value. If you go to one hotel in the Windermere area, make it Gilpin. You will not be disappointed

Room Tip: Garden rooms are very spacious and have fabulous bathrooms. Beauty treatments in room

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
At the heart of Gilpin is a very passionate family and team, dedicated to creating lasting memories for their guests, who return time and again for celebrations and escapes. Warmth and friendliness are balanced with extraordinary service, exquisite décor and stunning culinary experiences. This five star hotel comprises two separate estates in the beautiful Lake District, with a luxury country house on each. At Gilpin Hotel all of the 25 bedrooms have lovely Lakeland views, most leading directly onto the gardens - including six Garden Suites with their own cedarwood hot tubs, and five fabulous detached Spa Lodges. The Spa Lodges were added in 2016, and are cedar-clad with king size beds, gorgeous bathrooms and a fabulously private en-suite spa each, with a convertible treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval stone bath, outdoor sauna and hydrotherapy hot tub surrounded by a walled garden. Add this to the mood lighting, fires, electric blinds and a state-of-the-art music system, and all of the senses are invigorated. Just a mile away at Gilpin Lake House, six gorgeous rooms share a fully staffed boutique hotel with a heated indoor swimming pool (for Lake House guests only), outdoor hot tubs and saunas, and exclusive access to 100 acres of grounds with a stunningly beautiful private lake. Our chauffeurs bring you to the hotel in the evening to dine. Dine in either the Michelin starred main restaurant, 'Hrishi', where Hrishikesh Desai combines great Lake District produce and classic methods to deliver unbelievable textures and flavours with just a twist of Asia, or in 'Gilpin Spice' a new informal restaurant transcending international boundaries, with an open kitchen focussing on dishes from the spice trail spanning the Indian sub-continent, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and China. ... more   less
