Highly recommend this hotel, we booked a hot tub room which we took advantage of and the rooms are spacious and have everything you need. The bathrooms are really nice with a lovely shower or a massive bath. We found it highly amusing that you have to put a stuffed cat outside the room as a do not disturb sign.

The restaurant and food is beautiful, the service is excellent, and attention to detail is out of this world and really make you feel welcome. The only criticism is they need background music on in the restaurant, everyone is whispering and it takes away the atmosphere, a little bit of soft music would do the trick. Loved the little touches of pre dinner starters and desserts.
Overall I can't fault this hotel and will be returning very shortly as we both loved our stay at the Gilpin lodge.

We’ve been fortunate enough to visit a number of hotels in the Lake District over the years as we’re only 45-50 minutes drive away. In truth you can’t fail to find hotels of a decent standard in and around Windermere but finding one that stands out and offers all round excellence run by a private family is that bit harder.
Gilpin Lodge offers a mix of excellent location, fabulous food, and attentive highly professional staff in a family atmosphere, in my opinion that’s hard to match. Now you expect a very high standard of a Relais & Chateaux property and during out 3 night break we weren’t disappointed.
Special thanks to Sarah, Gill and Zoe who made our stay warm and welcoming even though the Windermere weather tried it’s best to dampen our spirits at times. We will be going back later in the year when hopefully the British weather improves somewhat.

Room Tip: Try a garden suite with its own hot tub, expensive but worth every penny if your visit if for a spec...

Was excited to be going but it turned out to be quite a disappointment. Have eaten there before but not on NYE. Hotel was too hot, rooms too crowded with too many people booked in and those that arrived at 8.00pm felt like second class citizens to see lots of people already sitting down and eating and understand these were residents. Either it is for residents or for all and if so should be one sitting. We were squashed into a smallish room. Is even the Gilpin Lodge now becoming one focussed on taking money off the public that it has forgotten what it says it is.. Barely enough space to sit at your table. Food still good but went seriously down hill after the main course. We understand there is a new chef! Staff, as ever, are very attentive and helpful.

Seeing the rooms being cleared up ready for breakfast around us also not a good sign. Felt unwelcome overall and being a bit of a nuisance once dinner was over as an outside guest and not resident

A "wonderful Christmas experience". Something unique organised for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Hotel decor and ambience, food, staff all first class - even the many species of birds are well fed in the gardens! The surrounding countryside is beautiful and peaceful. Couldn't be better.

Room Tip: We stayed in a junior suite room - lots of room and windows with views.

I booked late and was offered a special room and breakfast and dinner deal, the honesty ( room had working going on 9 till 4 daily outside, we where out all day so who cares 40% reduction :) fantastic )was so refreshing this is a very high end small hotel that try’s and succeeds in excelling in all that it offers.
Fantastic relaxed but formal surroundings, comfy seating in little rooms it almost felt like little private dinning rooms but with very attentive service.
This family run hotel offers some of the best eating I have had and all at a price whilst not cheap it was great value.
My wife has never forgotten the whole thing including the two foot deep beds to end your day in if your lucky enough to be staying over.

Best small hotel i have ever stayed at date was feb 2004 but really wanted to share i have seen its grown from this time to even higher heights if that possible

You've read all the reviews, so no need to go on too much. We had an excellent time, ate too much, drank too much but that was the idea. Went with another couple. Had a very nice room, bathroom a little small but not a problem.

Staff very friendly. Food outstanding (especially the breakfast which is world class)

Took us just over 3 hours from London on train so very easy.

Would love to go back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
At the heart of Gilpin is a very passionate family and team, dedicated to creating lasting memories for their guests, who return time and again for celebrations and escapes. Warmth and friendliness are balanced with extraordinary service, exquisite décor and stunning culinary experiences. This five star hotel comprises two separate estates in the beautiful Lake District, with a luxury country house on each. At Gilpin Hotel all of the 25 bedrooms have lovely Lakeland views, most leading directly onto the gardens - including six Garden Suites with their own cedarwood hot tubs, and five fabulous detached Spa Lodges. The Spa Lodges were added in 2016, and are cedar-clad with king size beds, gorgeous bathrooms and a fabulously private en-suite spa each, with a convertible treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval stone bath, outdoor sauna and hydrotherapy hot tub surrounded by a walled garden. Add this to the mood lighting, fires, electric blinds and a state-of-the-art music system, and all of the senses are invigorated. Just a mile away at Gilpin Lake House, six gorgeous rooms share a fully staffed boutique hotel with a heated indoor swimming pool (for Lake House guests only), outdoor hot tubs and saunas, and exclusive access to 100 acres of grounds with a stunningly beautiful private lake. Our chauffeurs bring you to the hotel in the evening to dine. Dine in either the Michelin starred main restaurant, 'Hrishi', where Hrishikesh Desai combines great Lake District produce and classic methods to deliver unbelievable textures and flavours with just a twist of Asia, or in 'Gilpin Spice' a new informal restaurant transcending international boundaries, with an open kitchen focussing on dishes from the spice trail spanning the Indian sub-continent, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and China. ... more   less
