“sshhhh don't tell anyone, keep it to yourself.”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

We have been staying here regularly for the last 5 years. The welcome is always warm, the owners Barney and Zoe take time to speak to the guests and nothing is too much trouble.
Gordon the general manager and executive chef has revamped the food, it now matches the stunning rooms. His enthusiasm was infectious, we just happened to comment on the quality of all things the butter, it is apparently one of Gordons finds from Scotland, he then arranged for a container of it to be chauffeured to the lake house to catch up with us so we could take some home! Thanks this is true attention to detail.
The jetty spa is a fantastic new addition, Tamar gave me a much needed massage to get the knots out of my muscles.I cannot imagine a spa with a better view.
The revamped dining room is lovely, very relaxing and it was good to have an easily accessible reception now ( although John felt it took some of the character of the old building away.)
Andrew the chauffeur is very friendly, he was very disappointed to find out he had kept us waiting for 10mins as a result of a communication error with the hotel , so organised complimentary drinks.
The service in the restaurant is efficient but friendly , being served the chateaubriand was almost entertainment in itself and it tasted fabulous.
The whole relaxing experience is only possible by the hard work and attention too detail from, Zoe, Barney and all the staff both in the hotel and Lake house.
The two down sides we found was the pool could have been a little cleaner, may be its harder to fit this in now due to the popularity of the spa ? The new communication systems the senior staff have meant that some were furtively "whispering" into their cuffs asking questions like a spy thriller! ( still it gave us a laugh!)
All in all a wonderful hotel, but don't tell everyone as they will all want to come.

Room Tip: All the rooms are luxurious, The Sergeant Man garden suite has excellent neighbours.......the reside...

Thank you for coming back to see us all again and for writing such a fantastic review! It is great to have such positive feedback about our new reception area, dining room and menus. We will of course take your little pointers on board to continue providing a wonderful service in each department.

See you both again soon.

Kindest regards,
Barney & Zoe Cunliffe

We have been to this hotel before and it is interesting to see it evolve. The one thing that never alters is the quality and attention to detail.
There is nothing that hasn't been considered and certainly nothing that is not the finest quality.
Food and service exemplary.
Would not hesitate to recommend to any one.
However all this excellence comes at a price so don't be surprised at the rates.

It was in the 1990s when we first came across this gem of a hotel, then under the leadership of John and Christine Cunliffe. Over the years the family have continually expanded and re-invested in the property, which is now run by the younger generation, from whom one always receives a very warm welcome and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Whether at the Lake House or at Gilpin everywhere is beautifully warm, comfortable, very tastefully decorated and memorable breakfasts, infact everything to deserve their Relais Chataux accolade.

However during our visit last autumn we were somewhat disillusioned by what had now become an extremely long interlude of anything from three quarters of an hour upwards between courses at dinner. This was extenuated by the inclusion of small taster plates inbetween each course, thus turning an enjoyable relaxed occasion into a long evening event, with little time and energy to enjoy coffee afterwards in the lounge.

Our biggest disappointmnent however has been the ownership’s failure to return a number of telephone enquiries for a block booking for what could be considered a prestigious event for the Autumn of 2015, thus leaving us with the prospect of sourcing another venue – such a pity.

Fantastic location, superb rooms and Heather and her team are excellent hosts, attentive, friendly and passionate about making your visit exceptional. With only 6 suites and a fantastic spa this is a heavenly location. Whilst the attention to detail, of the decor, the food, the service and every other aspect of your stay is a joy to experience.

Relaxing getaway at the Lake House. We took the Magic Moments Platinum package which at £570 you would expect something special and it didn't disappoint. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by excellent staff who couldn't do enough for you. The owner Barny took time to show us the recent refurbishments and and we noted throughout our stay he took time out to speak to all the guests. The Jetty Spa trail is innovatively thought out and very relaxing. Andrew the chauffeur was punctual and chatty which we liked. The food on the 7 course taster menu was Michelin star standard. My only negative was the drinks were on the expensive side, Overall a hotel with a difference and we will go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in Maud and the room was spacious with a tarn view.

It was June when we got in touch with the Gilpin hotel about booking the Lake House for my sisters wedding and from the off, I was always greeted by a warm and friendly voice when making initial enquiries and was soon dealing directly with Renato, who invited us from some afternoon tea with a tour of the house. We were not disappointed! Renato talked us through the details and Laurentiu, a man who we would be become better acquainted with later, gave us the grand tour of The Lake House. We even caught a glimpse of the owner Christine helping out in the kitchen as they were short staffed and for the brief 10 minutes we spoke to her we were immediately drawn to her humble and heart warming nature, not what we expected from the owner of such luxury accommodation. Afternoon tea was delicious, even the crisps were handmade and my mother and husband experienced what was the best coffee they had ever tasted. Needless to say, we booked very shortly after.

After 6 months of waiting we arrived at The Lake House right at check in time of 2pm where they were all ready, we were greeted at the doors, helped with our bags and we were all shown to our rooms. After settling in the whole family gathered in the lounge for some afternoon tea and snacks. Laurentiu was our main point of contact and quickly made it clear that him and the team were on hand should we require anything at all during our stay, a great reassurance that everything was in hand.

My husband and I had chosen to have a couples massage at the jetty spa during our stay, it was just over an hour of pure indulgence! The jetty spa in itself is a glorious piece of architecture. Hubby had chosen an Aromatherapy massage, I had chosen an Indian head massage and we would both have the treatments again if we could.

On the Monday night we had a fantastic evening meal which blew us all away, that was until we tucked into the five course wedding breakfast the next day. I have been fortunate enough to eat at some fantastic restaurants and the plating and taste of each dish at The Lake house was exceptional, a treat for our eyes and taste buds. The chef really did go above and beyond and truly took us on a culinary journey we all still reminisce about!

Wedding aside, the whole experience had been magical. Being at The Lake house felt like being in an extension of our home. There was no point where it felt we were restricted, uncomfortable or felt like we were missing anything. The Lake house really does provide something for everyone. What sets it aside is the care and attention taken by the team there and there ability to somehow always pre-empt the needs of the party as a whole.

I can't thank The Lake house enough for giving my sister and her new husband the wedding weekend they both dreamed of and for giving us all memories we can truly treasure for many years to come. Most importantly I can't WAIT to go back in the new year!!

Special thank you to Renato, Jenna, Liz, Laurentiu, Elisabeth, Julian, the wonderful chef and all the others behind the scenes who helped make our stay spectacular

(If anyone would like a detailed account of our experience at The Lake House there is an in depth story on my blog - http://sustravelstories.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/when-my-little-sister-announced-her.html - if you're unsure of booking hopefully this will convince you!)

I have just come back from 3 days staying in Harriet at the Lake House with my girlfriend. What a place and what a room.

We were picked up from Oxenholme by Andy who had us laughing all the way to the Lake House. We were warmly greeted by Heather and her team and shown to our room. Waking up to a full height view of the lake was a great way to kick off a day and when the weather came in it was so relaxing to sit in the windows reading whilst it snowed and rained outside. The decor and comfort of the room and the bathroom was exceptional and being able to sit in the main living room with an open fire was also a treat.

We spent an afternoon on the Sap trail which was very relaxing, finishing off with some champagne in the hot tub -a must do. We also spent numerous hours whiling away in the boathouse which has a fire, blankets and comfy sofas to relax on.

We really couldn't recommend this place any more. If you like fantastic rooms and open spaces with a view, unobtrusive but attentive service, this is the place for you. We will definately be back.
Matthew

P.S We saw some other rooms whilst checking out and they are all lovely, but Harriet is incredible.
