Celebrated my wife's birthday here, just the 1 night, and it simply is not long enough. The Cunliffe family who own and run the hotel have done an amazing job. And as a Cunliffe myself ( no relation what so ever sadly ), I am proud to share the same surname :)

ROOM - We stayed in the Troutbeck suite in the main house, its above the bar, but there was no real noise to keep you awake. The room is enormous, with tripple aspect windows, so lots of natural light. Very well furnished & decorated, a designers dream. Lovely views out to the lama paddock also, and patio doors leading out onto an enormous patio, I am sure its lovely out there in Summer, or even better if it had a hot tub on the patio. The only thing I would change is the bathroom, its nothing WOW, even though it has a jacuzzi bath, its just a bit plain compared to the opulence of the bedroom.

STAFF - Clearly they like to work here, smiles smiles smiles and everyone happy to stop and talk. Great service throughout, and a very good sommelier, he knows his stuff alright.

KITCHEN/FOOD - WOW, I know it has 3 rosettes, but I am not sure what they need to do to get a Michelin star, as the service and presentation and quality of the food was sublime. We had the tasting menu, which was just delicious. Every single course, but the Mutton was stand out. With a superb selection of cheeses when the cheese course arrived, and home made fruit loaf and crackers. Heck, they even make their own butter, which had crispy pork scratchings on top of it for that salty taste, yum. Breakfast was another feast. Fresh, local produce cooked superbly, and all the juices were freshly squeezed for you. Food is just stand out.

My only negative would be the atmosphere, there is no music, but that means you can hear everyone talk, and everyone is talking in whispers ad everyone knows they can be heard. It just needed to be a big more relaxed and comfy, and a little music could just do that instead of total silence !!

Just visit this place, ideally for more than 1 night. Select any room, as its just a joy to be at the venue and.

Highly recommend and will re visit one day. Already told friends & family to think about a visit.

"Thanks to all at The Gilpin" see you again no doubt.

Room Tip: Troutbeck is huge, real stand out room. See our pictures.

My husband and I had two nights in the Henrietta Suite and it was magical. The service was impeccable throughout our stay, from Andrew the chauffeur to the girls who make hot chocolate for our return from walks. The food up in the main house isn't quite up to scratch and the atmosphere is little flat (music is definitely needed in the dining rooms) but it didn't change my desire to go back. We loved it!

From the moment we booked to the moment we checked out, we were so well looked after. A phone call the night before to make sure we knew about the check In times and to ask us heat time we'd like to eat was a very nice touch. Very easy check in and the girl on reception had no hesitation to show us round the hotel before being shown to the room. We had a voucher for dinner , bed and breakfast in a classic room, but we're told on arrival that they had upgraded us to a junior suite which was amazing. Enjoyed the jacuzzi bath, lounge area and really comfy huge bed. We went down to the lovely bar area and were served promptly with canapés and drinks. The menu was brilliant with lots of choice and the food did not disappoint, truly stunning. When on returning to the room, the bed had been turned and everywhere tidied . A great nights sleep in such great surroundings, the breakfast was great also with plenty of choice. Would recommend this hotel to anybody and made a simple decision for us to return again soon. Thanks to you all!!!!

We stayed here for 1 night as part of a weekend away for a special birthday. We booked the platinum package which included a spa day and a seven course dinner. From the moment we arrived we were treated very well...all the staff were helpful and friendly! The attention to detail was fab and we felt well and truly pampered. I received a birthday card on arrival too. The spa day included exclusive use of the pool/ sauna, a massage in a room over looking the lake and afternoon tea in the boathouse...bliss! The food at the main hotel was delicious and the chauffeur to and from was a nice extra. I couldn't recommend this place enough. So glad I found it online. We would love to return when the weather is better. Thank you to all the staff :)

Room Tip: All the rooms in the lake house are decorated different but they are all a high spec and full of character so you can't go wrong really!

Thanks to all at the Gilpin once again. When we need to chill and de-stress this is the place to be. The world becomes still and calm. Wonderful staff and beautiful food. Nothing is too much trouble.
I'm sure all the rooms are lovely but we in particular love Wetherlam.
We are also loving the alterations to the ground floor....well done Team Gilpin!

Room Tip: Wetherlam is a beautiful room but the bathroom is not for tall people.
