“Just what we wanted”

Gilpin Lodge is a great place to relax. We wanted some quiet down time after our daughter's wedding with some great food and drink. That's exactly what we got, with the plus of very friendly, motivated staff and owners who take time to meet and listen to their guests. We'll be back. Thank you for a wonderful time.

Another perfect short break, one of many in last five years
No problems at all, in fact we have never had any with rooms, food etc and we do keep going back for more
Personal service and attention from Cunliffe family and staff is exemplary and we have seen them, on occasion, making strenuous efforts to resolve concerns of any guests whether real or imagined

If the hotel is good enough for the Sultan of Oman, its good eough for us

Just re-booked for October

Room Tip: The garden Suites book very quickly for understandable reasons

Just returned from another superb stay at Gilpin Lodge and Lake House. Having previously stayed at Gilpin Lodge, we decided to stay at the Lake House this time...it was wonderful. We stayed in Gertie which was a large beautiful room with lovely large bathroom and big bath tub. It was also lovely to be driven to the main hotel for our evening meals which gave the evenings a real sense of occasion. The food was wonderful and we enjoyed meeting the chef before our meal and him describing the dishes to us, giving us his personal recommendations to help us choose.

The service was exceptional and it would be impossible to single out one member of staff in particular as they were all lovely. I would definitely stay at the Lake House again as it was so private with only 6 rooms in total...we hardly saw anyone else. I swam in the pool all three days and was the only one in there. We also did the Jetty Spa Trail which was wonderful and I would highly recommend this...it was such a relaxing, special afternoon. The highlights of the spa trail would be champagne in the hot tub overlooking the lake and the lovely present that we could take away...a selection of toiletries made up of our own personally selected aromatherapy blend. It has been lovely to take a little bit of the spa home with us and re-live the spa feeling.

I would 100% recommend this very special place to anyone and strongly recommend staying for at least two nights to enjoy the full benefit and give yourself chance to relax and enjoy the facilities and a good read overlooking the lake. We did a lot of walking whilst there as there are very picturesque walks in the local area and the concierge gave us maps and popular routes that we thoroughly enjoyed.

We will be returning very soon...I can't wait. Thank you to all at the hotel who made the bank holiday weekend so special for us.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the Lake House if you like absolute privacy and relaxation and direct access to the...

My husband and I were looking forward to visit this hotel, specially reading all the great review and the lovely pictures of the hotel and lake house on the internet. We could not decide either to stay in the hotel or the lake house so we took the advice and booked 1 night at the hotel garden suite than 2 night in the Harriet at the lake house. On arrival we were greeted by reception, no paper work needed and within minutes we were at the lovely garden having our lunch. But thing start going wrong, I ordered soup of the day which was carrot and ginger, it was most salty soup I never had and the waitress agreed and apologised. I was offered a glass bubble for the disappointment. That did not bother me too much as I was very impress with our garden suite "Dollywagon Pike". Although the Wi Fi would not collect in the room or in the main hotel but again we did not mind. Around 5:00pm, I start getting ready for our dinner by running a bath, and noticed there is no hot water, we inform the reception and discovered their was problem with the hotel boiler and the engineers are on site resolving it. While we wait the Lake District was hinted by a thunder storm for about a hour which caused our TV stop working and the fire alarm in the hotel also stop. We waited till after 8pm still no hot water so had to do our best to go for the fine dinning experience without a wash. The hot water return after 10pm and we used the hot tub at night, knowing we can have a wash before bed, while we were in the hot tub we noticed the motor seem very noise. Next day morning around 7:30am, we were wake by a high pitch noise coming from the outside, contacted reception the lady said some guest had problem with the hot tub noise and suggested we switch it off from the fuse box that was located in the wardrobe, we requested her to come to our room to hear the recording on my iPhone which she did and agreed it is different and loud. At breakfast we meet the lady owner first time, she apologised all the trouble we been through and explained the noise from the hot tub was caused by the storm so it was unexpected, which we agreed and hope a lovely day ahead as we were moving to their best room "Harriet" in the lake house. We accepted her apologies and thank the owner for the kind complimentary drinks. The location and our room "Harriet" in the Lake house was perfect, the staff Heather was friendly and helpful, we had the jetty spa day and everything was lovely. Dinner were back to the main hotel, food was great but the dinning room is bit stiff as it was only two couple in the room so we return to the Lake house early. We discovered the Lake house was formerly a residential property, it was converted to a hotel in 2010, as any old property you would expect the squeaking floor boards and bathroom running noise. We first noticed heavy footsteps and power pump noise running directly above our bed at around 9:00pm, did not take much notice as expect it will go away in half hour top, but it gone on for two hours, we inform the reception about it and he said he will check upstairs but he never return our call, the same power pump running noise came back after midnight for over a hour, and return again at 2:45am for 20 mins, which I recorded all on my iPhone app as evidence. The Lake house does not have any staff after 11pm. So if anything goes wrong you are in a very difficult position, although we did contact the main hotel about the problem but Bob the night time manger said is nothing he can do. So another stressful night sleep. Next day morning, we inform the staff Heather at 8:00am when the noise start again, we ask her come in our room and she immediately said it is the running water and agreed it is not possible to sleep with the noise going in the background. By this point we were extremely tired and stress as it feel we has no sleep in the last 48 hours, we decided to check out early. The owner meet us and we showed him our recoding, we were told there were three Chinese girls stay in the little loft room above us last night and Heather discovered that they were up all night chatting and drinking which explained the extra footsteps we hear. But to be fair they hasn't done anything wrong, they were not paying loud music, they just up late in their room, and any other guest should never able to hear them. The owner were reasonable and accepted that our experience in either the hotel or the lake house were very poor due to staff error and the storm weather. We were not charge for our stay at the lake house and further discount for the stay in the hotel. I hope our experience will provide them a view to improve the room soundproofing, although we were extremely disappointed I would like to give the lake house another chance, I hope they were able to resolve the noise appear to be the shower pump or whatever it is running directly above the Harriet room as the room is perfect and should not have the noise problem that affect the guest staying in no matter how many guest is in the loft room above.

Room Tip: If you going to book the Harriet room check who is above you.

Thank you for your post regarding your stay with us.

As you know the hotel was struck by lightening on the evening in question, which amongst other things affected the WiFi, TVs and fire alarm; two of the hot tubs (yours being one) were affected by a resultant power surge which caused the motors to overwork and make noise.

The soup of course was nothing to do with this, but was as you say unacceptable - we apologised and immediately gave you both complimentary drinks.

Regarding the water, we have installed a new Biomass Boiler system which earlier in the evening had a fault meaning that the hotel had no hot water. The first call to notify reception was at 6pm, at which point we immediately switched to the back up immersion and called in our Maintenance Manager and the Biomass engineer. They reset the system and we had hot water again by around 8.30pm - we understood that you didn’t want to wait for the boiler to heat up, and came down to dine at 8pm.

We were so glad that you enjoyed the following day and evening, but very disappointed to hear that the second night was disturbed.

We do of course have sound proofing but understood that you were disturbed by some guests having showers late at night (although as you said, not voices or footsteps), which meant that you heard the sound of running water through the pipes; this isn’t usually a problem as mostly everybody showers in the early evening. We have a policy of no weddings, groups, functions or children just to avoid this kind of issue, and most of the time we can assure peace and quiet as a result.

At 00:45, just after the Lake House staff left (00:30) your husband called Bob, the manager on duty all night, who offered to come immediately but during the call your husband informed him that everything was sorted. What we had not known was that meanwhile you had disturbed other guests that were sleeping, and that the bedroom that was causing the disturbance were unaware that there was a problem.

We put more complimentary drinks in your room after the first evening in the hope that this would appease the situation a little, and didn’t charge you for your stay at the Lake House. To be honest we really thought that we had been more than fair, and feel sad that you have felt the need to post this on a public site despite our having done our utmost.

Kind regards,
Zoë & Barney Cunliffe.

We stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate our 25th anniversary and had a fabulous time, from the welcome we received to checking out, We stayed in a garden suite room complete with hot tub. The room wanted for nothing, from excellent tea making facilities to clean lovely smellies to try in the bathroom. The food was to die for and the service was second to non. Would definately love to return here wirh some sun next time to enjoy the gardens.

Room Tip: We had a garden room, you have your own hot tub and sitting area,

We stayed here for one night in May celebrating a friends 80th birthday. The room was very good, the wifi worked but there is no mobile reception in the vicinity of the hotel. Everything was well maintained but overheating is a problem - unduly warm and no air conditioning which should have been available in an expensive hotel even though it is an old building. The breakfast was very good.

The service at the birthday dinner was poor - too many faults to list. The food was OK but the chef does not understand seasoning or flavour and texture combinations.

I booked a garden suite for my partners 30th birthday. The room was beautiful and well equipped, not as private as hoped, but we did get the sun all day! Beautiful setting. We had the fine dining (included in the £495 I paid for one night) which was ok but nothing on the plate matched, so some tastes were distorted, service was long though (I was dying to get back to the room) as we ate in a quiet dining room, with only two elderly couples. Desert was lovely, and breakfast was beautiful (we ate in our room). My biggest problem was the way we were greeted by the porter and then the receptionist, it was as if we were not the type of people that they expected. The porter rudely asked if he could help and looked embarrassed when I replied I was there to check in. The receptionist didn't look happy to see us and took an eternity showing us every small detail in the room then lingering about as if she was waiting for a tip. I did feel uneasy after the cold welcome but the room was lovely and we just spent as much time as possible in there.
