Phoned up last minute for a room as a birthday treat for hubby, offered a selection of rooms in which I opted for a a Garden suit.
From the minute you arrive till the minute you leave you are looked after by wonderful staff, the room was amazing and food outstanding. The service is exceptional.on leaving we could not think of one criticism (which has never happened before) not even a small gripe.even though we were a way one night we felt like we'd had a proper break .
Thankyou to all staff, can't wait to return.

There is no doubt that Christine Cunliffe has a brilliant eye for décor and tasteful sumptuous style. Our Garden Suite (Haystacks) had everything anyone could wish for in luxury and sheer decadence. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I have experienced anywhere in the world (including the Western Grand in Berlin that claims the honour of having the best beds - Gilpin rooms beat theirs hands down). Sadly we had to vacate the Garden Room after two nights- for a junior Suite, which although somewhat smaller, still boasted the same degree of style and comfort, and perversely, more wardrobe space. That was my only criticism of our Garden Room wardrobe space was small and in quite an awkward position but that's just me being picky.
Both rooms had an array of teas, coffee and chocolate drinks, iced water, mini bar and toiletries. - the A very nice touch was the lovely cups from which to drink your choice of in room beverage. Meals were an experience in themselves. Breakfast menu offered a huge choice and combinations, was well cooked and a perfect start to the day. Dinner was an equally exciting event and I can't recommend the Trifle highly enough. It was pure sin in a dish and I would go back just for that alone - however my waistline is groaning at the thought.
Staffa the Gilpin are, without doubt, the stars. Great service, care and attention without snobbery or stuffiness. Friendly, interesting people with a sense of humour often lacking in establishments of this quality - in fact some of the humour has a touch of the irreverent (no names no pack drill) which added to the family feel. If I were to change anything - and this is a personal thing and not a criticism, I think that with several, separate dining areas I would have welcomed the choice of a lighter dinner time menu. There is no doubt that the Gilpin offers fine dining at its best and the Chefs are to be congratulated on their cooking, style and presentation (as are the waiting staff, bar staff housekeepers and grounds people for their attention to detail) but for stays of longer than a few days the opportunity to chose from a less "rich" menu would be a welcome addition. But that is just my personal preference. Gilpin prides itself on offering the very best of British produce and it certainly achieves this.
In conclusion this is a hotel that offers an extremely relaxing and comfortable getaway and I do hope we will be able to return - if they will have us!! :)

Room Tip: All rooms seem to have something special.

I have just returned from a night away at the gilpin for my husbands surprise 40th birthday. This hotel is simply amazing. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome and the staff couldn't do enough for us. We stayed in one of the garden suites, the cat bells and it couldn't have been any better. The attention to detail is fantastic. We both love this hotel and can't wait to return. Thanks for making our stay so special.

Room Tip: Definitely pick a garden suite, the hot tubs are amazing

Stayed in one of the Garden Rooms with hot tub and we had such a special time. The staff were incredibly helpful and warm in their reception, immediately asking our plans for the weekend and advising us on the local area.
Our room was really lovely. The decor is contemporary and luxurious and the bed was really comfortable.
All of the meals were excellent. Our dinner in the evening was excellent and breakfast was really good - the home made muesli with fresh cream was delicious!
We had a wonderful stay and next time will try the Lake House.

Room Tip: Would recommend the Garden rooms with Hot Tub.

I could not believe the negative review I have just read and felt compelled to write my own review.
We stayed at the Lake house last September for four nights and we were treated like royalty from the moment we were greeted at the front door. We also stayed in the Harriet suite and what a fantastic suite it is with a view to die for. One night before getting ready for dinner up at the main house we wandered down on to the jetty to enjoy a glass of champagne and the next thing we knew a charming young man was following us with fur throws so that we could snuggle up and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the lake. We loved the fact that there are discreet buzzers every where which you can press for attention at any time. Each evening as we left the Lake house to go for dinner at the main house the house staff complimented us on our appearance as we got into our chauffeur driven car ( driven by Andrew). Once at the main house the staff there were very attentive from arrival to departure . Zoe and Barney spent a lot of time chatting to guest and asking how their day went. We have booked to stay at the Gilpin hotel again in July only this time in a garden suite with it 's own hot tub and we are counting the weeks down. How many sleeps? Don't just take our word for it, try it yourself, you won't be disappointed.

We stayed at the Lake House for four nights. Great accommodation, truly serene surroundings. Wonderful food. Great staff - who have very high service standards but are very down to earth. Overall a spectacular rest

Room Tip: We stayed in Maud which was lovely - spacious, beautiful view of the lake. Note: Shower only, but if...

At the heart of Gilpin is a very passionate family and team, dedicated to creating lasting memories for their guests, who return time and again for celebrations and escapes. Warmth and friendliness are balanced with extraordinary service, exquisite décor and stunning culinary experiences. This five star hotel comprises two separate estates in the beautiful Lake District, with a luxury country house on each. At Gilpin Hotel all of the 25 bedrooms have lovely Lakeland views, most leading directly onto the gardens - including six Garden Suites with their own cedarwood hot tubs, and five fabulous detached Spa Lodges. The Spa Lodges were added in 2016, and are cedar-clad with king size beds, gorgeous bathrooms and a fabulously private en-suite spa each, with a convertible treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval stone bath, outdoor sauna and hydrotherapy hot tub surrounded by a walled garden. Add this to the mood lighting, fires, electric blinds and a state-of-the-art music system, and all of the senses are invigorated. Just a mile away at Gilpin Lake House, six gorgeous rooms share a fully staffed boutique hotel with a heated indoor swimming pool (for Lake House guests only), outdoor hot tubs and saunas, and exclusive access to 100 acres of grounds with a stunningly beautiful private lake. Our chauffeurs bring you to the hotel in the evening to dine. Dine in either the Michelin starred main restaurant, 'Hrishi', where Hrishikesh Desai combines great Lake District produce and classic methods to deliver unbelievable textures and flavours with just a twist of Asia, or in 'Gilpin Spice' a new informal restaurant transcending international boundaries, with an open kitchen focussing on dishes from the spice trail spanning the Indian sub-continent, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and China. ... more   less
