“So Good. You almost want to keep the secret for yourself”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

I have stayed twice once at the Gilpin Hotel and once at the Lake House. You will not regret staying at either! It is almost impossible to fault. The rooms are superbly decorated, comfortable, clean and quiet. If it wasn't for the great communal areas and idyllic location you would be more than happy to never leave your room. The restaurant deserves more awards than it has had.

If going again I would chose to pay the bit extra to stay at the Lake House for the pool, spa and of course Lake. It is somewhere I often think about when work is busy and frustrating. Can't wait until I can go back, money and children permitting!

The facilities are very nice but service does not meet the same standards. We spent four nights and stayed in the main hotel building. Our room was fine, but had to water the window boxes several times because no one pays attention to them even though it was mentioned to them on the first morning. Service is slow in dining room, one person's breakfast was not served, and we had been there one hour and had to leave without the main course served. Only 8 people in dining room this particular morning. Food presentations were very nice but in several instances it was not what was expected for flavor. The wait staff is mostly foreign and many have a problem understanding simple requests. One server told us he came to England for one year so he could learn English. That is admirable, but he should not be the person that needs to take dinner orders or answer guests questions. The front office does not follow up promptly on requests or completely ignores them. Our guide talked to the office people and his requests were ignored, too. The owners are present, but only act as greeters and do not show any interest in the guests by asking how there stay is or if they can do anything for anyone. We were only asking for simple things.

We had a wonderful stay here for our 25th wedding anniversary. We stayed in the Sargeant Man suite which is very private and the room and hot tub (outdoors) overlooks the Llama paddock. The room was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and had everything the discerning traveller could wish for. The staff were very welcoming indeed from start to finish and we had two nights of culinary delight with exceptional dinners and the best quality breakfast. I particularly liked the black pudding! I was worried beforehand that there didn’t appear to be any draught beers. There aren’t but I needn’t have worried as there is a good selection of bottled beers which are chilled to perfection. The owners mingle well with the guests without being instrusive. We would return in a heartbeat, but at almost £1100 for 2 nights with the drinks included, it might well be another 5 years before we return for our 30th. I wish we could afford to go on a more regular basis, it’s superb. Thanks for the fond memories for our special occasion.

Room Tip: Sargeant Man suite is the room for privacy

Last minute booking, but wow didn't we get lucky.

From the moment we arrived the staff and family at the Gilpin could not have been more welcoming or helpful. With many thanks to Jenny for organising an unforgettable horse riding trip giving us a real chance to explore the wonderful scenery.

After a LONG drive we booked ourselves in for dinner. After ordering drink we were welcomed by Gordon who introduced the menu to us. Gordon was a delight to speak to making us feel very special. The food spoke for itself, each dish was beautifully presented and tasted exquisite.

The rooms were well equip and maintained. Offering us two peaceful nights sleep in a tranquil setting. The rooms were serviced twice a day.

The Gilpin offer their own range of product (Shampoo/ conditioner etc) which were divine, so much so they had to be purchased.

We would like to thank all the staff that made our stay unforgettable. We look forward to returning and staying in a Garden suite so we can enjoy a hot tub after a days activities.

Thanks again
Tim and Lynda

We booked the Gilpin because it was our 30th wedding anniversary. We had limited time, so booked something we thought would be top quality and memorable.
We were not disappointed!
What a gem!
From the welcoming staff to the beautifully appointed rooms, this hotel is fabulous.

We had a garden room, Sergeant Man, with its own spa tub on the outside decking. The weather was fabulous. The experience was just bliss.

The public rooms are just as nice too, the bar, wine cellar and the lounges are wonderful spaces to relax in.

The gardens were typically English gardens at their best.

The Gilpin is expensive but you get what you pay for! As the saying goes.
We were sorry to have just one night, but have vowed to return!
Thanks for a memorable 30th Anniversary x

Phoned up last minute for a room as a birthday treat for hubby, offered a selection of rooms in which I opted for a a Garden suit.
From the minute you arrive till the minute you leave you are looked after by wonderful staff, the room was amazing and food outstanding. The service is exceptional.on leaving we could not think of one criticism (which has never happened before) not even a small gripe.even though we were a way one night we felt like we'd had a proper break .
Thankyou to all staff, can't wait to return.
