Gilpin Lodge

Gilpin Lodge is situated a five minute drive to the east of Lake Windermere. It has 26 rooms, six of them in a separate "lake house" property a mile or so down the road from the main house, set in 100 acres of private grounds and with a very pretty view over a small lake. I stayed in the lake house room called Maud, a very large room with a view over the lake. The room had a large, comfortable bed, good lighting and a modern walk-in shower. The wifi internet worked fine, with a rather modest download speed of 6.7 Mbps and an upload speed of 1.8 Mbps when I measured it, which is fine for casual internet browsing. There is a pretty garden, terraces and sun loungers overlooking the lake, weather permitting. The restaurant currently has 3 AA rosettes and offers appealing, good quality food.

The key to Gilpin Lodge is the charm of the staff, who are unusually welcoming, friendly and well trained, including the chauffeur that is available to the guests. My stay felt more like staying at a friend's house (albeit a friend with a handsome lakeside property) than at a commercial hotel. I would happily return.

Without question the best accommodation we have ever stayed in. The Lake House is a pure escape and did not fail to deliver on any aspect. I simply cannot find enough words to adequately describe and praise this fabulous hotel. It was a special treat weekend to celebrate my 50th birthday and provided memories that will last forever.

Our room ‘Gertie’ was beautifully decorated, as are all the rooms, with impressive attention to detail and although it did not overlook the lake the views were still stunning.

The Lake House setting is so tranquil and from the moment you arrive you feel enveloped into an exquisite haven. Although exclusive in the fact it only has 6 bedrooms we found the atmosphere to be relaxed without being over ’stuffy’. I think the quality of the small team of staff there certainly contribute to creating this unique experience; thank you to them all.

In fact all the staff that we met at both the Lake House and Hotel were extremely courteous and friendly, nothing was too much trouble.

I appreciate that some guests that stay here are no doubt use to this standard of accommodation on a more regular basis and so will have higher expectations and perhaps scrutinize in finer detail but for us the experience was simply perfection. Location, presentation, food and service all 5 star; we could not fault anything.

Expensive indulgence? ………possibly. Worth every penny? ……….Absolutely!

Been visiting this wonderful hotel now for 20 years plus but our visit for my wife's birthday treat in July was lacking. As usual we had a wonderful room, although the hot tub worked only erratically, The staff were, as always, attentive but then Gordon, the General Manager, forgot who we were and introduced himself to us on both of the two nights of our stay (don't expect this in a quality Hotel) and it took 25 minutes for us to receive after dinner drinks - a little poor in my opinion?
I am sorry to say so but despite comments made by other reviewers I felt that the Dinner was only pretty average and certainly not at the high standard I expected. I was especially disappointed to receive the same menu on successive evenings - I was told by other guests who had stayed longer that the menu had not changed at all during their stay. Again, for a Hotel of this quality, in my view just not good enough.
What have they done to the freshly squeezed orange juice? "Infused" to make it tasteless (actually it tasted exactly the same as the freshly squeezed pineapple, tasteless!
Over the years we have had wonderful visits to this Hotel but now the personal touch seems to have disappeared. For special occasions neither I nor my wife have expectations of any sort but to be presented with a plate with an iced message saying "Happy Birthday" and a "joke candle" attached seemed rather strange? Either "do- or don't"!
All of this said we will be back - this remains a wonderful hotel with fantastic ambience but it would be remiss not to say that this visit had its disappointments.

Gilpin Lodge is AMAZING...... I could leave it at but read on, the room was impeccable and luxurious, the service and food flawless

We stayed on the night of the 21st July to experience Gilpin Lodge. Pre dinner, we drank Cumbrian gin in the garden with the other guests whilst being looked after by Sarah and the team. With no rush we ordered the tasting menu and the selected wines.

The delicate amuse was followed by Gilpins version of mushrooms on toast this was excellent as was the consommé served alongside it and the selected wine.

The amazing dishes just kept on coming they included such delights as oyster with Munster crab, Lamb with sweet potato, strawberry and champagne sorbet and a dessert of rhubarb. Then came a well selected cheese board that was served with passion and perfection.

After a great nights sleep we ventured down for breakfast; knowing it was going to as good as the previous nights dinner....and of course it was.

I recommend you put Gilpin Lodge on your bucket list, if you don't you will never know how good it is !! if you do, the experience will last along time and Im sure like us you will return.

Thank you all at Gilpin.

Booked this after reading all the glowing reviews and now I will add my own. Amazing staff who do everything before you need to ask, wonderful rooms that are the best in luxury and breakfast with views. A couples retreat that has the stunning lakes to fall back on. One of those weekends where everything goes right.

If you want luxury in its finest then Gilpin Hotel in Windermere is the place to stay.

The staff are absolutely wonderful, so helpful which was a god send to us as we had nowhere to stay on the second night of my birthday treat, after being so badly let down by our hotel that we had already booked.

Not only did the Gilpin provide us with a room at such short notice they also upgraded our room to the most amazing Suite (Troutbeck) the terrace is out of this world.

The little details that the Gilpin provide are what obviously puts them so high up in the hotel world.
They provided a concierge to drive us along the road for our meal at the Wild Boar Restaurant and then he came back again to take us back to the Gilpin. On the way back we had a little detour to the Gilpin Lake House, that was well worth seeing.

This hotel is faultless, the staff are just great, the outside area is so peaceful, the rooms just make you go WOW, everything about Gilpin is it totally amazing, you will not be disappointed if you book to stay.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to be pretty much excellent

Brilliant stay at the Gilpin in the Sgt. Man room. The food was amazing, the staff was great and the Llamas were lovely neighbors. I can't wait to go back. The "do not disturb" signs were awesome. Loved it, full marks, thank you trip advisor reviews for recommending.
