We were so lucky with the weather, sunny and warm. We got a ticket and took the steam train up to the lake, then a 'free4dom of the lake' ticket', allowing us to hop on/hop off. Stopped at the fish and chip shop at Bowness for lunch, very nice piece of haddock. The boats were nice and clean, but very basic. The parking at the railway station was the cheapest in the area, otherwise parking is expensive.

England is truly beautiful. Windermere is a nature lovers paradise. There is loads to do for everyone. While we stuck to more walking around the lake, there are several other kinds of options too. A walk along the lake to Wray Castle is a must do. The ferry from Windermere takes you to the other side of the lake, where you can begin your trek. The town of Bowness is bustling little village. There are so many wonderful little shops, selling all kinds of knick knacks.
The drive around the lake to Ambleside and back to Bowness is very picturesque.WIndermere is truly worth a visit and truly worth going back.

Beautiful surroundings, a well run event - Supporting my sister to undertake the Great Swim. Well worth a visit.

A shame that this beautiful lake is spoilt by sheer numbers, car parking issues, body upon body of tourists. I rarely venture here because of it. Its a must see lake but too busy for me. Prefer the smaller lakes.

I just adore Bowness and windermere. We have visited all the lakes on many occasions bur always go back to Bowness
We feel at home and our dogs are welcome everywhere especially the Hydro where we visit at least once a year.
