“Beautiful gardens - combine with trip to Blackwell”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

This one enters my top 5 walled gardens. I love walled gardens, and this is a stunning one. I'm not sure how you could only spend 20 minutes here - when you've seen the walled garden, the planting continues up the hillside and in the tufa house. You really need to have a seat and soak in the wonderful colours of delphiniums. lupins, roses, clematis etc etc. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view down to Lake Windermere too. The donations are needed though, gardens like this need money to keep running - so put your hand in your pocket! We'll definitely visit again and look forward to seeing it in another season. Well done Lakeland Horticultural Society.

“Hidden gem”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

These gardens were a beautiful discovery. The gardens are beautiful and well cared for. There's a beautiful walled formal garden, green houses to enjoy and a few plants for sale. Then there are lots of winding paths, with hidden seats, steps and ponds. Amazing views of lake Windermere can be enjoyed from secluded seats.

For a quiet escape somewhere in the Lake District these gardens are a great choice. It's hard to believe the gardens are cared for entirely by volunteers, so pop in a little donation to keep these gardens going!

“Breathtaking Views and Stunning Gardens”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

The Lakeland Horiculture Society plants, nurtures, and maintains these beautiful gardens located near Windermere in the Lake District. Don't miss the opportunity to stroll the stunning beds both inside and outside the walls. Their collections of plants including dramatic beds of astilbe, hellebores, and hosta to mention three, are worth the visit not to mention thousands of other garden specimens. Remarkably this garden is maintained entirely by volunteeers with individual "wardens" and teams to work on particular areas. One of the most valuable aids for the vistor is the labeling of the plants with their latin names. Oooh, la la, it's a serious gardeners dream! I can't say enough about all the volunteer work these people do and it's impossible to describe the peacefulness and extraordinary beauty of the place. I walked from the bus stop at the bottom of Patterson Rd. and the whole experience of walking to and up from the entrance was enchanting. This was May and I can only imagine how the gardens have filled in with summer bloom. Don't miss it! I can't wait to return.

“Just ok”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

This place is nice but does not take long to look at and so I felt the donation asking price was a bit too much. They have done a lovely job but it is not a place you could spend most of the day at. However, Townend is not too far away and that place is worth a trip. No food available but you can get a drink from a machine.
