“A great place for a romantic break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2012

We stayed at the Samling November 8th and 9th in the Hovera Suite and it was faultless from start to finish. All the staff (front of house, kitchen and housekeeping) are a credit to themselves and the hotel. The hotel is in a beautiful location and our room had a stunning view across the lake. We dined in the hotel on the second night and had a superb meal - my husband sampled the cheese board which was a feast in its self!! Breakfast was fantastic we certainly did not need to eat lunch! What a lovely place to stay if you looking to get away from it all with your partner for a romantic break. Will definitely be back.

I recently stayed at this hotel having visited a lot of lovely hotels in the lakes and this is by far at the top of my experiences. With stunning lake veiws and excellent staff this place cannot go a miss... Me and my other half stayed in a standard double, Yan and although it had no lake views it was more than comfortable. We had also made a booking for the hot tub in the afternoon and although it was a more than chilly november afternoon, its was an amazing experience. We also had a bottle of Prossecco delivered to the hot tub which made the whole experience even more relaxing and enjoyable, just what you need after a manic week of work! We arrived in the lounge on the evening for dinner to be seated in front of the burning log fire, a treat from the cold, and a lovely smiley young man took our drinks order. After having ordered the gourmand tasting menu of which I was very exciting to sample having read a lot of good things about the restaurant. I noticed upon checking out an award which I was told by the gent checking us out that this was a recent win, best dining hotel in the world award. WOW! I would highly recommend any great foodie lovers to make a visit to The Samling to sample the delights of the food followed by the great sevice, it really is as good as they say. And deserves all credits given.

Stayed at the hotel over the weekend as a special treat and I was certainly treated!! Excellent service combined with fantastic food and superb wines made it a weekend to remember! Weather was good too as an added bonus. From arrival at the hotel-being greeted on the hotel turning circle to being shown to our gorgeous room with superb views of the lake, I felt like we had picked the perfect getaway. We enjoyed afternoon tea which was very scrumptious and then the seven course gourmand tasting menu for dinner in the evening, one word AMAZING. Well worth a try-we shall definitely be back!

Stayed on 17th November in The Bothy suite and everything about this small hotel exceeded our expectations.
The staff are friendly and cannot do enough for you. The view from the bothy was spectacular from both its own 'conservatory' lounge or from the private patio area
The food was excellent, especially the breakfast which was served in our suite.
We took two dogs with us and it is ideal for them as there is a good walk leading upto the woodland and they were made welcome
Yes some of the furnishings are a little worn but luxurious none the less and the service is really outstanding. We will be returning

I wanted a special break for my wife and The Samling seemed perfect, how wrong could I be. We arrived and ascended the driveway which we noticed was in a very poor state of repair. We were politely greeted and parked our car outside the room which was part the ground floor of a detached house and called The Dovenest, though prison cell would have been far more appropriate. The front door was filthy, and the handle loose having only 2 screws from 4 holding it on and upon entering the lobby black mold was evident on the walls of the lobby, not a great impression so far. Next we entered the room which was painted dark plum, and cold (Nov 15th), the lighting was so verypoor, the exact colour was not obvious. Two wall lights were not working, a standard lamp with perhaps the output of three candles was dirty, the tv had a plug extension underneath it with several metres of cable simply stuffed next to it. No view outside the window except a bush immediately in front of it and reducing light even more. Window blinds in the bedroom marked with paint, window blind in bathroom marked with paint and what might have been bleach in three very light splash marked areas. Table top in dingy bedroom marked and looking dirty but really weel worn and ingrained surface marks which were not removable. Chair covers marked with stains. At least 15 marks of chipped paint on the walls. Extractor fan in wc not working. Basin in en suite cracked. Base unit for sink coming off wall with 5-10mm gap from wall and both legs swaying over and looking very precarious indeed. Bath shelf needing redecoration with varnish missing. We needed to ring our 86 yr old mother at home to ensure her welbeing but could not an outside line from the room - this was reported but never fixed. I called reception to ask for a spare blanket incase we became cold overnight, this was not provided until our second request after the turndown service when it became clear it had been forgotten about. The turdown service included the top eiderdown being removed and simply thrown behind the curtains which were closed by the maid, perhaps to hide the eiderdown??? Not folded and put in the wardrobe as we subsequently found should have been done. There was no dvd player in the room but should have been, we had an employee setting one up at 11pm and he had to unplug the 3 candle lamp from the plug extension to facilitate the dvd player - the room made even duller. Lovely bath but no bubble. The furnishings in the room were cheap and shabby with a built in wardrobe of 1970s formica tye shelving and what can only be described as kitchen unit hinges on the doors. The main hotel lounge carpet was creme and dirty and one sofa had its stuffing coming out at the bottom, the end of one curtain rail was coming off, the whole place was tired. We ate in the restaurant thinking the food must be great bearing in mind the reputation of this place - how wrong we were. Turbot main course was basically a fish consomme of little taste, I tried lobster, never having had it before - and fear I still never have had lobster - it was tastless, chewy and minimal. Earlier we had ordered a cappuccino and an Irish coffee which arrived promptly but not an accompanying buscuit in site. We decided to cutail our planned two night stay and left after one, our bill included champagen at £65 which would have been reasonable except we never had champagne and this charge was removed from our bill when we challenged it. Still paying over £370 for one night incarceration after the bill was corrected is a significant amount for a ruined break. All expectation was destroyed - the place is terrible at any price. 5 Star prices, 2 Star quality and that insults some good quality 2 star establishments at which we would willingly prefer to stay. Never again.

Beautiful small hotel. Service is excellent - yes it is expensive but it is just like being in someone's home. Staff are friendly, food divine. We ate the taster menu with the matching wines. We would have liked the cheese course but could not manage it. View of the lake from our room was amazing. Would definitely recommend this hotel for a romantic break away.

Room Tip: I would pay the extra for the lake view - it is superb

We were somewhat hesitant about returning to the Samling. We stayed 10 years ago when it was in the ownership of Tom and Jocelyn Maxfield and it was superb. For a period we heard it had declined by decided to revist after we heard it was again in private ownership.
How pleased we are that we did! With a new GM who has an eye for a detail and a very talented new chef our stay was superb.
Met outside on our arrival by the friendly staff we immediately felt at ease. Our room was spacious and offered fantastic views of the Lake, particularly when taking room serivce breakfast each morning.
We had dinner in the restaurant, a-la-carte on the first evening and the tasing menu on the second. The food selection and quality was simply outstanding, I will be astonsihed if the hotel does not attain a michellin star next year as its former sister hotel Seaham Hall did when owned by the Maxfields.
We will certainly not wait another 10 years before returning especially as they have exciting plans to expand in 2013
