An excellent lunch in a well presented restaurant. The lunch menu is a bit limited but enough variation for everybody. This was our second visit within 10 days and as the menus were basically the same both times the maitre d' allowed us to choose from the a la carte menu. The staff were friendly and informative without being too obtrusive. We were fortunate with the weather so we finished with coffee on the terrace enjoying the wonderful view.Well deserved Michelin star.

Stayed for one night dinner bed and breakfast for £295.
Positives:
Fabulous location, hot tub overlooking Windermere, superb mojitos.
Staff were very pleasant.
Negatives:
Lack of reception staff to greet as you arrive. Had to park and carry all our bags and try to find someone so we could check in.
Only one member of staff who was also dealing with three guests who were paying for lunch.
Room was not well designed and the bed base was torn and the settee had a big stain.
The heat in the room was overwhelming and the ac was difficult.
I had expected so much from the samling and while it was pleasant I wouldn't rush to return.

An excellent well presented lunch with dishes that were at a standard only to be expected from a Michelin starred restaurant. The lunch menu has a limited choice of dishes, but for the price was extremely good value. It also gave us the opportunity to assess the restaurant before making the decision whether or not to consider a dinner booking in the future. The service and attentiveness of the staff was exceptional without being overpowering, which made the whole experience much more relaxing and enjoyable.
The views from the hotel back across Lake Windermere were to say the least breathtaking made all the better by a fine Autumn day.

Visited The Samling for a one night stay using a secret escapes offer, which took a considerable amount of money off the bill but still left us with a 5* cost - no worries this was a treat for us having
left the kids at home for this break! From the time we arrived to the time we left the service we received was probably the best we have ever experienced. They simply couldn't do enough for us - very attentive without being too full on - great. The suite was very well laid out, coffee maker, classy, not modern - more cosy, great view and right by the hot tub which we used in the rain for an hour with a glass of champagne - a lasting memory - lovely. Our small problem was that this suite cost 5* money and yet it was a bit tired. Marks on the carpet and sofa, the odd hair, wooden furniture with scratches, a shower that only half worked, couldn't get the tv to work upstairs, an old stereo that you couldn't plug an iPod into. I'm fairly sure that if we had asked the folk there to sort these things they would have graciously, but you know what, we wanted to relax for the short time we were there not spend it sorting things out.
We had the tasting menu with the deal. Being big foodies and on hearing a recent Michelin star had been awarded we were very excited about dinner. Again the service throughout the meal was peerless - Brilliant. Wine list was very impressive, Canapés and breads were really tasty, onion ash was new on us and was very good as part of a small appetiser salad, the pre dessert course was very very good, but then for our personal taste some of the dishes didn't wow us as much as other high cost, accredited food we have had. The flavours were too delicate generally or may be not layered enough. The desert was not great, very hard Granola, poached pear that a spoon couldn't get through and again just not wow - what we got was very very good, not wow. The room was soulless and cramped causing conversation to be an awkward whisper. All this said, being wow is about matching personal preference, may be it didnt quite match ours. I'm sure others have no such comments and overall we really enjoyed our stay!

Nothing to complain about in this hotel. Firstly the location is great with stunning views over Lake Windermere from the moment you step out of your car. Car access to the driveway is tricky and best made from the Windermere to Ambleside road rather the other way round. Welcome is professional and efficient. The room we had was perfect with its own lounge Nespresso machine and cable TV and with a generous and nice view over to the lake. We found the double bed to be too narrow. It should be 2 meters wide for a hotel of this class. Nevertheless it was comfortable.
The highlight of the stay are the meals. The research in the menus is quite awesome. Even canapés and appetizers are of great quality ! We stayed three nights which gave us the time to try on each option of the menu which is set for a period of time I imagine.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Pym junior suite lake facing

We stayed at Samling for the first time on our honeymoon just over a year ago. The current management had not been in place that long and suffice to say that the list of issues and problems we experienced and reported was so long that the general manager made no excuses, manfully apologised and invited us back for a complimentary two night stay – this is a review of that second stay.
The service and staff attention were first class – as they before. We stayed in the Manmire cottage suite as we had last time and were pleased to find a welcome bottle of champagne and that that all the previous catalogue of housekeeping issues had all been addressed – newly decorated, sticking doors and windows now capable of being opened, new /cleaned carpets in place and very clean.
The maintenance in the bathroom still needs some attention but we appreciate that it’s not possible to do everything all at once – the toilet base is still loose and the body jets in the shower still do not work. The Manmire suite is very private being some distance from the main house and dark at night – again one of the lights on the pathway wasn’t working but this wasn’t a big issue.
There are plans to change the access drive although there is now an instruction to guests that entering/exiting from/to the Ambleside direction is not a good idea and guests should exit /enter from the Windermere side as it’s a lot safer.
As we stayed for 3 nights last time we struggled with just a choice of 6 main courses in the restaurant from a menu that didn’t change and now there are only 4 choices – not an issue for us as we only ate in the restaurant once – our request for scallops was readily satisfied and tour meal was rerrific, served with expertise and knowledge and very enjoyable.
The Samling continues to be a special place for us – The attention and service, the solitude, the surroundings, the view up lake Windermere from the terrace of the Manmire and the adjacent hot tub is breath-taking. All in all this was a great experience and a welcome return for us – why 4 out of 5? Well there are still some maintenance improvements needed and at these prices it shouldn’t really take two attempts to get it right…..

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet then spend the extra and go for one of the suites - The Manmire is right...

Beautiful old house, helpful staff and brillant views of Lake Windermere. The only issue we had was the limited menu for vegetarians - beetroot, beetroot and more beetroot and that they serve the unethical foie gras.
