My wife and I had afternoon tea at the Samling in February. Having been to a number of places locally for afternoon tea we were very excited to come here. Mainly because of the reputation of the hotel and also because of its Michelin star.

The service from start to finish was excellent! The two gentleman who looked after us were attentive and warm, whilst unobtrusive.

We sat in the lounge overlooking the lake and enjoyed the view from the slightly worn sofas. The first gentleman brought out a selection of extravagant home bleneded teas for us to choose from and wow, they were impressive. Pungent and elaborate.

The cakes soon followed and although they were enjoyable I thought they weren't as exciting and crafted as we had experienced at other local hotels. All looked like they had been made in bulk and then portioned. The perfect afternoon tea to me encompasses varying styles, tastes and textures of cake as well as a degree of creativity. Most of which just wasn't there.

All in all the experience was enjoyable but for a Michelin starred top local hotel, I would have expected more.

What a fantastic present this turned out to be to mark my retirement from teaching. Everything about our stay was magnificent - the luxurious room with beautiful views of the lake, the delicious food and the professional and helpful staff. We opted for the tasting menu with the wine flight. Each course was well presented and innovative and the accompanying wines extremely well selected. The whole meal was perfectly timed with exceptional service from the knowledgeable staff. We can't wait to return to this fabulous hotel.

My partner and I were so looking forward to getting away for some 'us' time and needed somewhere romantic, intimate and unobtrusive.
The Samling was the perfect place.
We booked the lethera suite with it's wonderful view over Windermere.
We had a wonderful afternoon sat at the table looking over the lake followed by an hour in the hot tub with it's breath taking views as it fell dusk.
Then followed by the most amazing 7 course tasing menu with the wonderful jenny looking after us, she us so passionate and knowledgable, she made our evening.
Breakfast in our room was a real treat, and fabulous again.
So good in fact we have booked the manmire suite for my birthday in March, and are counting down the days until we are there again!
The perfect 5 star romantic hideaway.

We stayed here at the Samling Hotel maybe three years ago and had a pleasant if not outstanding stay. We decided to revisit yesterday on the13th February. A short drive from Carlisle and the winding climb from the main road soon had us at our destination. We were greeted at the car and after a prompt and polite check in were shown to our room in the main house. The luggage and the car were taken care of for us. Already a distinct improvement from our last visit. I had booked a luxury double which was situated at the front of the house with lovely views across the lake. The rooms are excellent with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The voluminous bath and walk in shower add to the overall feel of quality. A rather overpriced unrefrigerated mini bar merely an observation.
We went down to the lounge which has had a make over where a number of people were taking an impressive looking afternoon Tea. A large Gin and Tonic and then upstairs for a relaxing soak and prepare for dinner.
We dined at 8.15pm and descended the stairs early for a pre dinner drink and some delightful tasters . We opted for the taster menu without the wine flight and instead took a recommendation for the wine.
W e were shown through to one of the two small dining rooms with three tables which was intimate and had a relaxed atmosphere. The young French lady from the Loire valley was outstanding in all departments of the service. A bubbly and enthusiastic personality which matched perfectly the different items on the taster menu. Not wanting to describe the whole event there was variety, some lovely flavours and of course some showmanship. A well balanced and very enjoyable meal. The stunning cheese board was declined although one comment from the adjoining table was for more local cheeses to be available. Difficult to please very one I guess. Coffee in the lounge followed by a comfortable sleep. Took breakfast in the room which was delivered and laid out promptly.
Reluctantly time to go and a prompt checkout meant we were on our way.
In summary a small hotel offering top notch friendly service. Stuffy and pretentious it is not and I hope it stays that way. With one star in the bag I see no reason why another should not follow. Small well run hotels are hard to find and this is a real gem. The experience is made by the lovely staff who have confidence in the quality of the product they have on offer. Well done and thanks.

Room Tip: All the rooms are exceptional.

From the moment you climb up the drive way, you know you are going to arrive somewhere special. We were greeted by a member of the team who helped us off load our luggage and park our car. We were shown to our room which was everything we had hoped for and more. Stunning views of the lake. Sumptuous furnishings and fabrics. We were looking forward to our 7 course tasting menu however we discovered that the hotel has a private outdoor hot tub with availability. As we were drinking our champagne under the stars in the hot tub we wondered if there could possibly be a better place. The tasting menu and accompanying wines were superbly presented and cooked and the knowledge of our waiter was excellent. After dinner we retired to the lounge with roaring log fires where we enjoyed conversation with other guests. Breakfast offered a delicious choice and quality. This was a very personalised experience from arrival to departure and were presented with bespoke choclates on our departure. We look forward to returning soon. Paul & Amanda
