I wanted to find somewhere special for our 30th wedding Anniversary. We were away the week after so I wanted somewhere for a short break and thought of the Lake District. After a quick internet search the Applegarth was coming out top for location, quality and customer satisfaction. The hotel has old world charm with modern facilities. It is family run (and it shows with the attention to detail and care taken). The rooms are superb, with 3 levels of quality. We stayed in room 9 with a four poster bed, lovely views of the "village green" and a bathroom usually only seen in glossy magazines. The restaurant is also 5*. Evening meals were superb (at certain times the evening meals are included in the price) and it's the first hotel we have stayed at that had a 3 course breakfast menu. If Alex Politzi (the Hotel Inspector) stayed here, she would be happy. This may not be the cheapest hotel (£220 per night per room bb&em) but if you want quality and a warm welcome this is the one for you. Next year (2015) the hotel is expanding into an adjacent property that was part of the original building with what sounds like luxury rooms with balconies. We cannot wait to go back again.

Room Tip: look on the web site as there are descriptions and photos of the rooms

Thank you so much for your lovely review. You may be interested to know that Alex Polizzi and her film crew did stay with us from October through till March whilst they were filming an episode of the Hotel Inspector at a nearby Guest House, she really is an exceptionally lovely lady who had all the time in the world for anyone who wanted to talk to her. I think we had her number one fan staying at the time!

My Husband and I have just come back from an overnight stay at the Villa to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. We are regular visitors to the Lakes and have stayed in many different hotels, but this one far outshone the rest!
It was wonderful to stay in such a beautiful hotel, with so many of the lovely period features such as the wooden staircase, fireplaces and stained glass windows that have kept and restored. It is clear to see that alot of love, care and attention has gone into the hotel, been able to mix the old with the modern in such a beautiful way. Our room (num 7) was lovely, beautifully decorated with a huge fantastic bathroom and spa bath and wet room, and yummy smelling toiletries. We found everything spotlessly clean with big fluffy towels and bouncy pillows that all smelt lovely!
Our meal in the restaurant was wonderful, one of the best we have had, could not fault it in anyway. The pre-meal canapes were great as it made me try a starter I wouldn't normally have which was delicious. We enjoyed the intimacy of the restaurant, as there was just some background music playing, and like ourselves, the other couples just seemed to be enjoying having great food and just enjoying each others company. We have eaten in many other places where it has been that noisy you can't hear yourselves speak so this was nice. The same applied to breakfast, great tasting food, good selection and the staff very attentive, polite and quick with orders. We also enjoyed the bar area, we had drinks before our meal, and enjoyed chatting to the owner Alan and another couple who were there. After a long, hot, tiring day and aching legs, it was great to able to go bed and sleep in a lovely quiet location, as again we have been to other hotels where it has been very noisy with other guests still downstairs, so I think they have a great policy of only keeping the bar open until a certain time. I know this doesn't suit everyone, but there many other pubs around about that are open until late.
All in all, a wonderful hotel with wonderful food in a great location. However, cannot end this review, by saying that you cannot have a wonderful hotel without great owners. Alan and Suzanne should be very proud of Applegarth and what they have accomplished, lovely friendly people who couldn't do enough for us, and who work very hard long hours. Having chatted to them both they have certainly inspired us to maybe be abit closer to our dream of opening our own B&B, although we can only hope of having somewhere half as good as this! We will definately be returning, the problem been which room to choose next!
Thank you for a lovely Anniversary stay (Mr & Mrs Cupcakes)

Room Tip: We were in Num 7 wonderful, but all rooms look lovely

We certainly could not have asked for a more comprehensive and eloquent review, thank you seems totally inadequate.
It was also kind of you to clarify our bar closing times. The bar area does close at 11.30 pm but anyone who wishes is welcome to continue drinking in our very comfortable reception area. Alternatively, as we are so central we do have many local pubs on our door step, some of which have late bars.
To be quite honest our bar does start to go quiet about 10-10.30 pm as Guests, who have enjoyed a full day of fresh lakeland air, dined and had a few drinks tend to wander off to the comfort of their rooms.
We look forward to welcoming Mr and Mrs Cupcakes back for their birthdays in January/ February time

Well this was my first visit to The Applegarth & have to say i felt it was a bit of a let down.

The Hotel interior itself is very nice but the place lacked atmosphere , the bar area was hardly used & the restaurant was so quiet even when full there was just no buzz about the place which was such a shame as the food was excellent.
The bar was a big let down in the fact that last orders were 11pm on both nights of our stay fri & sat & by 11.15 we were asked to vacate the bar area as they wanted to lock up!! .......vacate where to??! , on the saturday night my wife & i were chatting to another couple in the bar & yes you have guessed it we were asked to vacate even though we still had drinks!! , we asked if it was ok if we took our drinks on the terrace which the barman said was fine but to take our front door keys as the terrace door would be locked behind us!! ......what at 11.20 on a saturday night!!! , we sat down on the well lit terrace slowly sipping my last birthday drink when hey presto the terrace lights went off so there we were in the pitch darkness!!!.
oh well time for bed then!! , as we opened the main entrance door i was half expecting a woman with a dressing gown coming out of the darkness to give us a good telling off for being out so late!!! ( 1970,s Blackpool landlady style!!).
In summary the 2 nights accomodation cost nearly £500 for that price it would of been nice to have been made to feel welcome , this is a 5 star hotel & with that should come 5 star service , i have never stayed in any 5 star hotel where the place is in lockdown by 11.30pm.
would i return to the Applegarth....no

Thank you for taking the time to review us and your kind words with regards to our decor and our food.
The very reason we are 5 star is due to us being a very relaxed place to stay in luxurious surroundings. Dining in our conservatory restaurant each evening having pre drinks on either our terrace or in our cosy bar is a civilised affair and is a place where you can enjoy good food amongst like minded people. Our bar keeps regular opening hours, we are not a pub open until 1pm in the morning with guests wandering around the building late at night possibly causing a disturbance to others. These places do exist nearby and would probably have been best suited to yourself but they will not be 5 star and they will certainly not have the facilities that we have.

Myself and my wife stayed for a few nights last week and we had a lovely stay. My wife loved the decor including the sparkly chairs and the sheep ornaments outside! Staff were polite and the owners welcoming and friendly. We would stay again.

It is always rewarding when the attention to details of our interior designer is appreciated, she really has made a magnificent job of the new bar., especially the sparkly chairs.
You may be interested to know that the sheep on the terrace have now been given names! They certainly are a talking point.

Me and my Partner stayed here for 2 nights last week and what a delight it was. Applegarth is beauitfully decorated to an extremely high standard. Having spoken to the owners we came to realise there is a lot of history behind the hotel and its great to see they have continued this throughout. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them, what a wonderful couple.
The bedrooms are also done to an exceptionally high standard. (Room 1) has the WOW factor. Having worked in a 71 bedroom, 4 star hotel for the last 4 years i always find myself looking for faults however, on this occasion i have absolutly nothing to fault.
We enjoyed dinner on one night and breakfast both mornings. Both were just lovely.. food quality was great and so was the service. It was lovely to see everyone smiling!
Thank you for a wonderful break and we will most certainly be returning before we head back to New Zealand in September.

Stayed here two nights recently and loved the place straight away. Beautifully decorated with interesting features throughout, very relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. The off street parking area is great - we parked on arrival and didn't move the car until we checked out.
The breakfast was delicious and a perfect start for a day's exploring. We didn't have dinner so cannot comment, but the menu looked very interesting and reading other reviews seems well received. We did have a nightcap in the bar and found it a perfect end to the day.
We had a small but comfortable room on the top floor (room 15) but the en suite shower room was tiny - we understand this was one of the less expensive rooms so recommend checking their website before you book to avoid disappointment. Do not let this put you off as the rest of our experience he was great!
Will revisit and have dinner next time.

Thank you so much for such a lovely review. We really are so lucky to have such a large secure carpark in the heart of Windermere village and being so central may Guests, like yourselves, do park up and don't move their car again till check out.
As you correctly mention we do have four types of room available catering for different budgets but all furnished to the same high standard with the benefit of bar and restaurant onsite. Hopefully we can welcome you back to enjoy one of our larger rooms where you will also benefit from the "dinner on the Villa" offer.

We have just returned from a five day stay at the Applegarth and the benefits have still to wear off. This was a very relaxing break in the best of hotels. Right from arriving and being blown away by the stunning reception area, the decor and furnishings. It didn't stop there. Every area of the hotel was immaculate from dining, lounges to bedrooms. All areas are furnished to an extremely high quality as was the cleanliness throughout. The location is perfect being a short stroll to the town centre (2-3 minutes). Views from the dining and patio seating areas are absolutely stunning. The food is of the highest quality. The selection at breakfast and dinner was varied with presentation and cooking a credit to the Chef. The meals were certainly something to be looked forward to. The atmosphere was unbelievably relaxed for a place with such style. The hosts, Alan and Suzanne, could not have been more welcoming and friendly, as was all the staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them. When returning to Windermere we will definitely be making the Applegarth our base. If you are reading this review with a view to visiting the area, book now. You wont be disappointed.

Room Tip: All rooms are high quality. Website gives good overall room description.
