January in the Lakes, the weather may not always be the best but this B&B certainly made up for it. Centrally located with good access to local amenities. The house itself was very clean, warm and welcoming, the bedrooms excellent and the breakfast sets you up for a good day's walking on the fells.
Do take time to have a good look at John's paintings they are truly fantastic.

What a lovely time we have had in Boston House.

From the outside I was sure that it was going to take a lot to make me leave. The wonderful exterior of the house is more than mirrored in the cleanliness and warmth of the interior. The bedooms are clean, comfortable, warm and everything you expect from the description of Boston House as a "luxury" Bed and Breakfast.

Our hosts put on a lovely breakfast, were hospitable and made us feel more than welcome. I have no complaints at all about Boston House....except that I had to leave!

We stayed as the result of a friends recommendation and we were not disappointed, luxury all the way, and all the little extra touches just made our stay all the more enjoyable, we will certainly return to this little haven in the lake district again.

....this place is a real find.....comfort, quality, & a quiet yet central setting are just some of the benefits i found from staying at Boston House...living in london i really couldn't believe how reasonable Boston House is considering the standard of the accomodation....it's a luxury b&b.....the beds, linen, towels & decor being of the highest standard......[seriously sumptious beds ensuring blissful sleep !]......the art through out is also beautiful & the lighting too [i find many hotels are let down by harsh, cheap lighting which can change the entire experience]...but importantly it's all very comfortable & relaxing...cleanliness is vital for me & this place is spotless.... the owners have ensured everything is of such high quality & it really is like being a guest in a very lovely home...there is a true peaceful & calm atmosphere the moment you walk through the door & for us, john & pauline were the perfect hosts....warm & welcoming yet not intrusive....i can honestly say i wouldn't even consider staying anywhere else in the Lakes.....

I am not normally galvanised into writing reviews, but having stayed in Boston House recently I feel duty bound to respond on behalf of the very nice proprietors to the rather whinging previous review by the contributor from Belfast.

We are retired and previously ran a very successful but small B&B, and a 20 bedroomed hotel, for 20 years near York.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Boston House.
Pauline and John are charming hosts and couldn't have made us more welcome.
The rooms are lovely, comfortable, warm and spotlessly clean.
Breakfast was good, perfectly cooked, and ample - many small B&B's these days ask for breakfast choices the night before. If there is only one person to cook breakfast for 10 people (or even less) it can be very difficult if everyone appears at once, to then conjure up a number of different dishes with no prior notice - this is the difference between a B&B and a hotel - you are basically paying for more staff and a different type of service....

A window of half an hour is quite fair for breakfast - do you really expect these poor folk to hang around for half the morning not knowing quite when they are going to have to serve food?

What a shame they have to ASK folk to turn off the lights, and what a shame their guests should feel insulted that they are asked to do so - elcetricity is both expensive and a precious resource, we should all be more careful.

Of course B&B's have to lay out their charges in black and white - can you imagine the uproar if someone came to pay by card and then was told that there was a levy - in a small establishment if you want the convenience of putting things on tick you should be prepared to pay for the privelege, the card companies charge a fortune in revenue to small operators, as we know only too well.

Finally, if you are seeking the standards and service of a hotel, please do not expect to pay B&B prices and then have a good old moan when you are disappointed - bite the bullet and shell out a bit more, for all our sakes.

We wish the MacDonalds well in their lovely home, and hope one day to return - and no, we do not harbour any connections with Boston House whatsoever, but simply would like to portray this from another angle.....

A visit to the website and we were sold on this Bed and Breakfast. The accommodation was good - a lovely bedroom and house, however no other communal room was made available.
Sadly the website promised a little too much. A wide choice of AGA cooked breakfasts meant a choice of three - we were asked to choose by 9pm the previous evening and not to vary from this.
Breakfasts were good, but served between 8:30 and 9:00, a small and impractical window. Besides the breakfast rules we were bemused by many other revenue generating house rules. The house handbook featured a lengthy policy on charges for lost property, telephone calls were charged at 10p/15p per minute, a 50p charge would be levied if the proprieters make a call on your behalf, and credit cards were subject to a handling charge.
In addition this handbook implored us "would you help us to save some energy by turning your bedroom lights out as you leave it!"
We left a little disappointed with the hospitality and thinking how inconvenient it must be to run a B&B and put up with all those strangers staying in your home.
