I have stayed at this hotel many times over the last few years and can honestly say that I have no desire to search for anywhere else now.
The staff is a real credit to the hotel and amongst the politest and most helpful I have ever come across. If you have any individual needs then they are more than happy to accommodate this and actually go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
The rooms are always spotless and are also quite roomy. The little extras like free bottled water, mints and your own ice bucket to cool down drinks on a warm evening in your room are great and a selection of free good quality toiletries to try are a nice touch too.
We went on this occasion on a special weekend offer which included our 3 course meal and a glass of wine on the first night. A bargain! The food here is exceptional and drinks are not too badly priced either.
We also took advantage of a 10% discount for guests on water sports just across the road from the hotel and spent an afternoon canoeing. It was fantastic and much cheaper than hiring in Bowness or Ambleside. Staff again was extremely helpful.
In the spa, the pool, sauna, steam room and outside hot tub provide a great way to unwind after a day out.
There were seven members of my family here on this visit as it was for our wedding anniversary and our son’s joint 30th birthdays. They had put balloons, chocolates and cards in our rooms for our arrival and I must say this was a lovely touch.
We are hoping to revisit again in November this year and are really looking forward to our return.
If you want to be kept up to date with any offers the hotel are promoting you can visit their website and sign up to get them. Another little perk the hotel offers you.
I love this hotel and would gladly recommend it to anyone. It really is the perfect place to stay.

Dear Guest, thank you for your review, especially about the breakfast in our Windermere Restaurant, I am sorry that you felt one o’clock was not an early enough time for you to access your room, our rooms however are not guaranteed to be available until 3pm, this is stated in all confirmation letters.
We do try when possible to have all rooms ready as soon as possible after the previous guest has checked out and I am glad on this occasion we were able to give you your room early. We do also provide a changing room for guests that are only staying for the night of the wedding to get ready in, should our rooms not be ready early. We stayed for 1 night in early July 2011. we had a family room. Unlike the previous reviewer we had a room in the main hotel building (just above reception). A big family room, even with a cot and camp bed there was still lots of space. The pool was a real bonus and the kids food was well received.
we had dinner in the restaurant which was pleasant without being amazing.

Overall we had a nice stay - the hotel is lovely and in a great location.

We needed a late deal on a hotel. We never looked at any late room comparison sites, as I knew the hotel from personal experience. Am kind of local and stayed there in the past some years ago. Was even a member of their leisure club about 15 years ago. I booked a family friendly room for myself, wife and a 2 year old. Agreed a dinner bed and breakfast package for a single night. Was expensive for one night given the fact we were such a late booking. Check in was fine and pleasant. Given a room key and the reception described how to navigate to the room. Room 511, third floor at the rear of the hotel. No lift just stairs. So excited for a night away, yet the thrill wore off instantly. I was taken back to 1985, brass fittings, brass light switches, magnolia scuffed & scratched pained walls. Broken curtain, with bent rails, dirty mould around the bath taps, leaking sink taps. Double glazing in the windows all misted up and defective. Rotten window sills. We purposely asked for a family friendly room. A hot day but we dare not open the window due to the fact we were on the 3rd floor. Our son could easily fall out due to the fact there were no safety locks on the window. No air-conditioning or mini bar facilities. There was an ice machine through a 100 foot maze of corridors, but what use it is without a mini bar is ludicrous.

Once in bed, a halogen light beams right over you blinding you. The TV is minute, so should you be able to watch it in bed you need 20:20 vision. The ironing board was broken, we tried to use the iron but it was stained with previous melted garments. Whilst an attempt was made at ironing it marked my wife’s new dress. The only positive point I can say about this hotel was the staff in the restaurant were lovely and the swimming pool is very child friendly. However in the leisure club changing rooms guests were using the towels provided to clean the floor to allow their children to change. All in all, I hated the trip, will never stay there again. I was clouded by my previous local knowledge and experiences. It needs investment and quickly……
Certainly not 4 STAR, more like 1 STAR. A premier inn would have been more tateful.

Dear Wattsmark, I read with great disappointment the level of accommodation your family had experienced upon your last visit.

Please be assured I have reviewed room 511 and your comments have been noted and action taken to replace the ironing facilities. We are sorry you found the 21 inch television small; we have not received any other detrimental comments since all televisions had been renewed some 2 years ago.

I can confirm we are in the process of replacing a limited number of double glazed units throughout the Resort, and due to ensuring the integrity of the building these are hand crafted from wood and it will take time to replace all units, however I can confirm the windows in 511 are safe and not defective as you have stated.

Our bedrooms and public areas are daily reviewed for maintenance issues from blown light bulbs to refurbishment of corridor walls which can be subjected to scuffs from luggage from time to time; we pride ourselves on maintaining a high standard of decoration throughout which is highlighted by many other TripAdvisor reviews.

I am pleased you enjoyed your dining experience in the Windermere Restaurant on Monday evening and you found the staff efficient and friendly.

As a team we are very sorry you have rated us only as 1 star and you do not agree with the AA awarding bodies’ annual access of 4 star and your experience had been a very isolated occurrence which is proven by the many favorable reviews of our customers and our repeat business.

Thank you for your review and we are sorry to read you will not be staying with us in the future. I am only sorry we did not have the chance to discussing any of the above either during your stay or indeed on departure; it would only have been fair to give us the opportunity to rectify rather than leaving so disappointed.

A lovely place to stay....a kind of resort in itself. But if you want to be nearer the shops and pubs in the town area, then this is a bit out of the way.....though distance is not much. Windemere is such a sleepy little place........everything shuts down by 5 pm (except the eating places). Hotel interiors are warm and cosy. Breakfast was a good varied spread and staff were friendly.

Room Tip: Our double room was spacious and comfortable, so also the bathroom

We stayed in room 19 that I believe is one of their feature rooms.

The hotel has a art deco type of appearance and has a large number of classy touches. The restaurant was very good and the swimming pool and leisure facilities were well above average.

We will definitely stay there again.

Although this is a 4* hotel it didn't quite offer a 4* experience. The hotel is in a beautiful situation close to Lake Windermere, and is easy to get to on the A591. Too easy, actually - the road goes between the hotel and the lake and detracts somewhat from the outlook. The welcome was friendly and efficient and got us checked in, and luggage to the rooms, with the minimum of fuss. The rooms were clean and had adjoining doors so we could keep an eye on the children, but were also rather small. The "high speed" internet access is free but is certainly not high speed by today's standards. Given that the Lake District is an area for outdoor activities but can be pretty rainy, it would have been nice to have a bigger towel rail to dry stuff on. On the plus side the double bed was effectively two singles stuck together with a giant mattress on, so it was a very good size.

The leisure centre was nice, with a decent sized pool that's more for messing around in than for serious swimmers, and a jacuzzi and outdoor hot tub. There's also a gym that is reasonably well equipped if a little cramped. All the kit seemed to be kept in good order. The general impression of the leisure centre was that it had last been done up a little while ago, but has been well looked after and was pretty pleasant.
There's a water sports centre where the instructors looked after our 13yr daughter very well when she tried water skiing for the first time. As noted elsewhere, you have to cross the A591 to get to it, which can turn into a bit of a game of Frogger.

Our biggest disappointment was the food. Selection from the various menus in different bars and restaurants was a bit limited, and in the main bar they have a bewildering range of different menus at different times of the day. so in the evening you can get a selection of cheeses in the restaurant, but you can't get the cheese and cold ham platter in the bar because it's on the daytime bar menu, not the evening menu. It seemed a bit inflexible. We also found the service a bit slow in the bar. On the last night we ate in the restaurant and found it very poor value for money. The food was not exactly bad, but was very ordinary and uninspired.

Overall we felt that the hotel didn't quite offer a four star experience. Although the staff were friendly and helpful the food didn't live up to the pricing, the road spoils what would otherwise be an idyllic situation, and the rooms were too small.

Dear Guest, Firstly I would like to thank you for your lovely comments regarding our team throughout the hotel, the room and leisure facilities as well as the very comfy king size bed. It was also gratifying to read that your daughter very much enjoyed her first waterskiing lesson, I will certainly pass on your comments.
I am however sorry that you felt the dining experience was disappointing, we do have lounge menu which serves a selection of food from 12pm – 6pm and a different selection from 6pm – 9.30pm in order to offer a more substantial meal in the evening, our formal Windermere Restaurant only serves breakfast and a formal A la Carte evening meal, I am sorry if you found this confusing. In terms of our evening A la Carte menu selection this has recently changed as our menus do change every few months to match local seasonal opportunities.
I hope you will give us the opportunity in the near future to demonstrate these issues you experienced do not occur again. Kind Regards Michelle Croukamp, Deputy Manager.
