“A wedding to remember”
Reviewed 2 June 2013

We went to a family wedding in the Merewood and loved it! We stayed 2 nights and were lucky enough to be given one of the rooms overlooking the views down to Lake Windermere. The rooms were spotless with everything you needed and anything that wasn't in your room the reception staff were more than happy to provide. There are no hairdryers or irons/ironing boards in the rooms but these were provided on request. The staff were really helpful and made the wedding run really smoothly - it was a rainy day but the fire was lit when we arrived back from the church ceremony and everyone was welcomed even if they arrived earlier than expected! The food was great and house wines very tasty too! My only comment would be that the drinks from the bar were quite expensive (similar to London prices which I didn't mind as I often pay these anyway) but I suppose that is because there are no other options in the immediate vicinity. All in all a good stay!

We went for the Afternoon tea, now on offer for 4 people for 40 pounds, and it exceeded our expectations! They gave us loads of sandwiches, cakes, some chocolate/banana petit fours, pannacotta, scones with butter, cream and jam and it was all delicious! Since the weather was fantastic, we sat on the terrace, but they showed us two beautiful lounges (library and drawing room) inside where they'd normally serve the afternoon tea. The staff was great as well, very attentive.

We stayed at the Merewood for 2 nights for our friends wedding. First impressions were very good, beautiful location with amazing views over lake Windermere, roaring log fires and plenty of rooms to lounge in and have a drink with friends. The hotel really felt like home as our friends hired it exclusively for the wedding party. The bedroom was clean and nicely presented but the only downfall was it was how warm it was in there, the windows were painted shut and the air con wasn't strong enough to cool it down. Sorry!
The food was delicious, whether it be breakfast (the nicest sausage and black pudding ive ever had!) plus lovely hot croissants, cereals and fruit salad with plenty of berries and fresh mint, bar meals were simple but just what you want sometimes during an indulgent weekend (fish and chips followed by sticky toffee pud which was delicious) Most importantly the wedding breakfast itself was exquisite, the beef literally melted in your mouth and the dessert WOW!
The best asset to this hotel was without a shadow of a doubt where it's staff, Lorna the manager, in particular was extremely warm and welcoming, no sign of a stiff upper lip which is what you might expect from a manager of a hotel of this hight standard, the fact that she took a real liking to our son meant a lot. Plus its nice to see a manager do just as much running around as the waiting on staff. The staff team were down to earth and very polite, service was fast and very well organised which I know from experience is difficult when you have a large party to tend to. Thank you all so so much for a wonderful weekend and particularly making our friends wedding a truly incredible day. We will definately be back! X

As part of a large group we go to somewhere like this each year for walking. Last year was near Hawes and was the same cost as this (£450, 3 mid-week nights with dinner) and the facilities were equally good. What set this Merewood place apart was the quality, variety and presentation of the food. I am sure we will be back.
I used to live in an area where everyone was called 'Duck', now 'Love' or 'Pet' are what I generally hear. At this hotel it was 'My darling'. Lovelly English staff with no pretentions and a real effort made to get us what we needed.
Ample parking. Good walking out of the back of the hotel initially past bluebell woods. National Trust property within walking distance. Bus services pass the entrance.

Room Tip: You would be better with a room at the front (most low numbers) which get the light, lake-view and a...

We decided to stay here for one night en-route back up to Scotland. We were made aware that there were no other guests staying on the night of our stay (a Sunday night), so we were given the best room in the hotel. Wow, it was AMAZING. We had booked dinner, bed and breakfast too, so decided to take full advantage and just stayed in the hotel for our entire stay and relaxed in a few of the many reception rooms, ate great food, and had a few glasses of wine!

First off, I must say you need to take stock and understand the value for money you get here. It does not seem ‘cheap’ at first glance, but once you add up what you could pay elsewhere in a standard hotel, and cost up three good meals at random eateries, it makes so much sense to instead immerse yourself in these fine surroundings and to sample the delights of the chef’s creations.

On our arrival at about lunch time we were introduced to the reception and waiting staff who were all very polite. We were told to make ourselves at home and feel free to explore the manor. The main dining room was busy with Sunday lunch so the chef offered to give us a light snack through in the main lounge-bar. We were presented with probably the best hot beef roll IN THE WORLD ! Side salad and perfect chips accompanied it … delicious.

Remember we were the only guests staying that evening, so I was a bit apprehensive about our evening meal, thinking we may be a bit short-changed. But nothing of the sort, we were seated at our table in the lovely bay window, with all the other tables set accordingly with their candles glowing. The staff had made a real effort to make us feel comfortable and to make the dining room look welcoming and as it would on any other busier night. I really liked that touch. They did the same for breakfast too, setting all the tables and presenting all of the continental foods and juices, even though they knew fine we were the only two guests in the place ! Good effort.

The evening meal was fantastic, here are the highlights. I had overheard the chef talking during the day to diners from the previous evening, who had made informed comment on the menu description of one of the dishes. I noticed that the chef had taken on board these comments and had made a slight change on the menu the night of our stay. Now, is that not the sign of a great chef, taking constructive comments and acting on them … great. Anyway, the starters of scallops were perfectly cooked and accompanied by a well-balanced velouté. I had the pigeon, which for my taste could have done with a bit less cooking and removal of some of the tough membrane/sinew, but I ate it all up nevertheless.

The second course palate cleansers were well sized and very tasty.

I had the main of slow cooked beef, 2 different cuts, and it was rich, succulent and melt in the mouth. The parsnip purée was smooth and well seasoned, perfectly cooked turned root vegetables completed the dish. My wife had the fillet of seabass which was equally well presented and cooked to perfection. The desserts were particularly well crafted and the attention to taste combinations and presentation was evident, we were even given a complimentary taster of another dessert as we found it so difficult to decide! Coffee and home made petit-fours completed the brilliant dining experience and these were served to us in the library. The staff had set a cosy wood fire in the library for us and had re-arranged the furniture to allow us to finish the evening in splendid comfort. Five brilliant courses, well worth the money, with the staff and chef exceeding our expectations. (ps. The head chef also oversees kitchen operations at the other sister hotels nearby, but I think primarily bases himself as head chef here at the Merewood)

We held our wedding at Merewood on 27th April 2013, and couldn't have wished for a better venue. The entire experience was absolutely perfect in every respect.

The hotel is a lovely country house situated in a beautiful location, set in its own grounds with amazing views over Lake Windermere. Inside, the atmosphere is extremely cosy, with roaring coal fires, comfortable rooms and a fantastic bar you could happily spend several hours in. The food is sensational. Even allowing for the fact they had to cater en masse for our wedding breakfast meal, many of our guests commented unprompted on the quality of the food, and the chef happily created special menus for some of our guests with very specific dietary requirements.

But by far the best thing about Merewood is its staff. It's hard to put into words just how fantastic they are, but they really do go above and beyond to make everybody welcome and ensure they have a great stay. Professional, expert, yet totally friendly and down-to-earth, they are a great bunch.

It's hard to single out individuals, but special praise must go to our wedding coordinator, Jenny, who planned every last detail with us to ensure the day went without any hitches; to Joe, who did absolutely everything from unloading our luggage to manning the bar to acting as MC; and to the hotel manager Lorna, who ensured that Merewood truly felt like our home away from home for the most important weekend of our lives. We can't thank them all enough.

We would wholeheartedly recommend Merewood to anybody looking to stay in the Lake District, and will definitely return in future.
