“From every aspect the Merewood was the perfect wedding venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2009

My daughter Natalie and her husband James held their wedding reception at the Merewood and I can only describe it as the perfect venue. The location is excellent with outstanding views of Windermere and the surrounding countryside. The hotel is warm and inviting and the staff incredibly helpful, friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. Thanks to the professionalism and efficiency of Helen the wedding co-ordiator and her team we were able to relax throughout confidant that we were in capable hands. It was like hosting a huge house party without any of the hard work. The food was fantastic with everything of the finest quality and beautifully presented piping hot - a remarkable feat when catering for 120. The meal and service were the prime topics of conversation both on the day and since with many saying it was one of the best meals that they had ever eaten. Indeed many said it was the best wedding they had ever been to. So thank you Helen and all the staff at the Merewood for your advice, help, friendliness and effort. You made our special day perfect and left us with many happy memories.

In short, there are three things that make this hotel unique, the staff, the food and location. Having the privilege of stopping at some of the ‘top hotels’ in the world, this hotel does not offer the swimming pool, valet service, and state of the art technology etc, but it does offer a unique experience that we will enjoy time and time again.

This is my first review of any hotel, all I ask if you read this review, consider this hotel, if you are visiting from outside the UK and going to the lake district – make this a must.

Enjoy.

We were married at the Merewood in Feb 09 of this year. Our weekend was everything we'd wished for which was largely down to the professionsalism and huge attention to detail by the staff at the hotel. The weekend ran like a dream. Nothing was too much trouble and the personal approach of the management and the team made such a difference. Not to mention the fabulous food, lovely rooms and beautiful setting. I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel, particularly if you want to take over a hotel for the weekend for a wedding or special occasion.

My husband and I were married at The Merewood on December 13th this year and found the hotel, staff and accomodation to be fantastic!
We booked the entire hotel for the whole of the weekend and from the minute we arrived found the entire experience extremely relaxing (which says a lot when it's your own wedding!) and very pleasant.
The entire weekend was delivered perfectly by Helen, Lorna, Joe and the rest of the staff, as they were very attentive without being too intrusive. The food was absolutely brilliant and this combined with the superb venue - made our wedding so special.
If you are looking for a Christmas wedding venue I would absolutely recommend this hotel, as it is decorated perfectly for Christmas, and this combined with the roaring fires, cosy atmosphere and fantastic views makes it an ideal venue at Christmas.
We had over 70 guests attend the wedding and found the hotel easily accomodated that number and could quite easily accomodate more.
If you are looking for a luxurious and pleasant hotel without the pomp and circumstance then this is definitely the hotel for you. My husband and I will be having our wedding anniversaries with the Merewood without fail each year and would absolutely recommend any couple to consider this hotel for their wedding - you won't be disappointed!

We chose the Merewood for our wedding on 18th October and I can't praise the hotel and staff highly enough. From the first time we walked through the door we have been completely in love with the Merewood. The wedding co-ordinator Helen is brilliant, anything we asked her to help with or organise for us was done very efficiently, which when its your wedding day you really appreciate. We booked the hotel for the whole weekend and filled the hotel (and Brierywood next door) with family and friends. This isn't as expensive as it may sound!

From the minute I arrived at the Merewood I felt completely at home, the staff were wonderful and we hosted a cocktail evening the evening before our wedding. This is not a normal Merewood thing but everyone threw themselves into it and we had a fabulous evening.

The actual wedding was wonderful. I didn't have to worry about anything. I felt the staff were completely in control and the whole thing felt very professional but extremely chilled out and friendly.

The food was gorgeous. All our guests were taking pictures of every course because each dish was presented beautifully. The food was not mass catered and everyones meal looked and tasted fabulous. The food in the evening (mini fish and chips and bacon butties) was a great idea.

In all, the rooms are gorgeous. It has a very comfortable, stately home feel to it. All the bedrooms were lovely, especially room 2 which we had as the bridal suite. The food is amazing and is presented with great attention to detail. But I have to say that the jewel in the crown for the Merewood is the staff. They worked so hard to make our day everything we dreamed of and more. I have every faith that they are as wonderful to each and every guest that walks through the door.

Thank you to Lorna, Helen, Joe and all of the other staff for making our day so wonderful.

PS: For the review about the size of the hotel, we had 70 guests to our day and around 100 to the evening and we could have had loads more without it being crowded. The Lonsdale suite is huge and surrounded by mirrors which makes it feel even bigger. Anyone looking for a wedding venue would be silly not to consider the Merewood!

Me and my girlfriend went to stay at the merewood to see if it would be good venue for our wedding. We have stayed at the cragwood, a sister hotel over the road before and been really impressed.
This lead us to the merewood which is marketed as an excelent wedding hotel on the website and it does look really nice.
We didn't find this to be true, its a bit small, it says it can handle 100 guests but i wouldn't like try, plus theres not much space outside as its on the side of the hill.
The views are stunning, but only at certain points.
As hotels goes it was a nice hotel. The rooms were a bit small but full of features. we had a massive 4 poster bed which was good, trouble was the TV was on a shelf in the corner and the bed post block it. Not the end of the world but we like to watch a little bit of TV in the morning.
The hotel is full of features everywhere including an open fire in reception and the bar and restaurants are lovely.
The food was excelent and the service friendly so as a hotel to stay in its good, but not as a wedding hotel if you've got a lot of guest, 30 -40 maybe.
If your wondering and looking for wedding venues we've booked our wedding at the Langdale Chase. Fantastic!!

Thank you so much for your kind comments from your recent stay with us. We have taken into account the poor view of the TV and will adjust this when we refurb the room. Whilst we only have 20 bedrooms on site we can actually accommodate weddings up to 120 guests easily in our Lonsdale Suite, I wish you had had the chance to see it as it has recently been redecorated and is looking wonderful! Numbers wise we don’t actually take weddings under 60 guests as the hotel is quite spread out and with sole occupancy guaranteed it needs a good amount of people to create a good atmosphere. One of our sister hotels (nearby) helps us out with overflow bedrooms if they don’t have an event of their own and we also use Langdale Chase for the same purpose.

Me and my husband got married at this hotel, it was absolutely fantastic, the staff were brilliant, they couldn't do more for you. We felt completely relaxed arranging my wedding day because they sorted everything out for us. All the family loved it. Beautiful location on a hillside looking right over the lake, the food was stunning. Can't wait to stay in the future. If your planning a wedding you should definately go to see Merewood, you'll come away with your Wedding Day booked its that impressive.
