Arrived on a very hot afternoon. The hotel entrance is unprepossessing leading to a cramped reception cum bar area. The hotel is an old building of no particular architectural merit that has been extended and developed over time. The dining room is a nice bright and airy space graced with clean fresh linen and quality cutlery. Other public rooms are not particularly impressive but everywhere is very clean and well taken care of. Our annexe bedroom / cum sitting room was spacious but a bit utilitarian. The bathroom again was very functional with a weak fixed head shower over the bath and liquid soap containers fixed to the walls. The grounds are not guest friendly and there is nowhere for a quiet stroll. However there is a nice terrace with excellent long distance views.
The inclusive website packages at this hotel represent excellent value for money making it hard to be critical. However I came away vaguely dissatisfied and I put this down to excessive marketing hype.
Dinner is O.K. to good, well presented but with small portions. Vegetables cost £3.05 extra, cheese £1.50 and house wine £18.95. Breakfast fruits are mainly tinned and there are no individual yogurt pots The plated main course was not appetising but improved in the second day when we ordered separately.
The hotel is understaffed at busy times. We waited to check in, we waited to check out and we waited for our dinner. That said all staff try hard to please

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your opinion of the hotel and your remarks have been noted. Other reviewers should consider your comments about the hotel's architecture etc in light of the building being a late 19th century typically Lakeland property and does not attempt to be pretentious in any way, all additions and modifications have to be in keeping with the original provenance and National Park regulations.

We must obviously respect your opinion about the food and we recognise that our menus do not suit every taste, however, having said that on the whole we do appear to meet the expections of the vast majoirty of our guests.

As far as the hotel being understaffed at busy times, I would like to assure you that we provide a level service which is comparable to many 4 star hotels, but inevitably, as in most hotels, check in/check out times are the busiest but we do monitor waiting times very closely and we consider these never to be excessive and most guests readily accept this.

Our marketing expert apologises for the fact that you left the hotel feeling 'vaguely dissatisfied' because of 'excessive marketing hype' however, we do try at all times to approach the marketing function in a tasteful and unglitterazzious (my word) way.

Whilst I get the feeling that you are not planning a return visit it would be nice if you gave us the opportunity some time in the future of ensuring that you left the hotel on that occasion feeling very satisfied.

We happened to call at this hotel by chance and surprisingly got a double room (late cancellation). We are so pleased we did ,this is a lovely/ fab hotel with beautiful views, good/ friendly service , quality produce and elegance throughout the inside and out, we didn't use the pool facilities etc.. but they were available and very nice to have. I would recommend this hotel its in a tranquil place just a stroll away to Windermere's main bars and restaurants well worth the money

I really wanted to give this hotel top marks, but...

Location; up the hill a bit but this gives you a glimpse of lake windermere from the patio which was lovely on 16/7/13 when the weather was kind.

Value for money; Travelzoo offer; nice cream tea on terrace, Pimms, Evening Meal and Coffee and breakfast, in a "cosy room"..fantastic value and very well organised.

Staff; efficient and friendly particularly the lady who served us breakfast.

Facilities; lovely swimming pool for a hot day, sauna not required!

Room; travelzoo offer was for a "cosy" room; which in hotel-speak means small . So, don't pack your cat because you won't be able to swing it!
Having seen "cosy" rooms in other hotels, I was pleasantly surprised at first by room 32 (at the back,no view,,didn't expect one)..there was a bath/shower, it was very clean and bright.
o.k.; there was too much furniture; it was annoying to have to move a chair every time I wanted to get in the wardrobe and the extra bolster and pillow on the bed got stored on the floor.....but
a cosy room should not mean a cosy bed and when my 6 foot tall husband lay down his feet went over the bottom of the bed...hence the loss of points. There is no mention of this on the website.
Please; small bedroom = less unneccessary furniture, not a mini-bed.We didn't complain because it was only for one night and we only found out when we settled down to sleep!

Food; lovely cream tea and the cumberland ham at breakfast was excellent.Good choice offered at evening meal; some things were cooked brilliantly.. the haddock and chips starter, but the potato gnocchi should not have been put on the plate and the trifle was solid.

Overall; great value for money and lovely people; a few tweaks needed.

Room Tip: Check that your bed is standard length.

Thank you, we like reviews such as yours 'warts and all' but clear, precise and to the point. Your food comments have been passed onto the Chef and he apologizes if some dishes did not come up to your expectations. However, on the whole it appears that your generally did enjoy the food.

Sorry if you feel we have used 'hotelspeak' to describe our smaller double rooms, it is a difficult one this because we desperately try not to give the wrong impression about the size and location of our rooms, however, I do take your point about the length of the bed although this is a standard size double bed as supplied to us by a very reputable hotel furniture supplier. As far as the other furniture is concerned the inspecting authorities do insist that every room has certain pieces of furniture in them and we have to provide this in order to maintain our 3 star status.

Glad you enjoyed the views and the in-house facilities. The Travel Zoo offer has been very popular, the vast majority of guests availing themselves of this, like yourselves, have found the package to be excellent value for money.

Your kind remarks about the staff have been passed on and were very much appreciated-thank you. I hope we might have the pleasure of welcoming back for a longer stay sometime in the future.

Just returned from a 2 night stay, our stay included dinner on the first night which was excellent, after a long journey you don't really want to go out and find a restaurant, the food was great, we didn't use the voucher we had for the cream tea, which i regret now ! The hotel is in an elavated position, lovely views over to crinkle crags. Our room was supposed to be a superior room but it was really small, and not enough room to put our cases anywhere , we ended up tripping over them, and had to squeeze past each when try moving around the room, having said that, it was clean ( one stain on the carpet that could have been dealt with ) room 28. Huge bathroom with lovely modern fixtures and fittings but one tip for anyone staying here, put the shower on 5 mins before you want to use it, it takes that long for hot water to emerge, and when it does it's a limp spray. The terrace was a lovely spot to sit in the sunshine and enjoy a glass of Pims. There are hundreds of hotels to chose from in the lakes, if you choose this one then you won't be dissapointed . For the manager :- please sort out the shower for future guests it's annoying .

Thank you for your constructive review, sorry you found the room a little small and the shower inadequate, we have had a number of very complimentary reviews from guests staying in room 28 but obviously we must respect your opinion however, thank you for taking the time to point out your reservations about this particular room, but hopefully the positives about the hotel, which you have kindly mentioned, did go some way to make up for your disappointment with the room. Glad you found the food excellent and I hope we can perhaps look forward to welcoming back on some future occasion.

I had booked this hotel to celebrate my parner being sixty. During the week prior to our two night stay my granddaughter was taken seriously ill and rushed to Kings College Hospital - we thought we may have to cancel. During this time the staff were so empathetic so thank you. Thankfully we did manage to arrive on the 12th of July my partners birthday and what can I say - ironically after a stressful and worrying week it was the perfect haven of peace - wonderful room, wonderful staff, wonderful food, Thank you Marco and everyone. My only recommendation would be to give your staff name badges so all can be named and rewarded for their wonderful service. I understand the Hillthwaite has been a family business for 42 years well you have nailed it!! Never mind expensive consultants or courses on customer service just send your employees to the Hillthwaite to see how it is a done - a better case study you will never find. My only fear is that with all these rave reviews I will not be able to afford to come back!!

'Touche' where do I begin? Your review has made me proud to be the Manager of the Hillthwaite, my only fear is that the staff are getting so many accolades on Trip Advisor over the past few months that they are going to be 'transfer targets' for some of our envious competitors!!
As far as name badges are concerned we are currently putting together a 'rogues gallery' of photographs which hopefully we will soon display in the entrance hall so the 'villains' can be identified.

Don't worry about not being able to afford to return we will continue to produce our value for money packages and look forward to welcoming back on one of these in the future.
