Found this hotel through Travel Zoo,booked direct with Hillthwait house a winter warmer break for 3nts ,this included Bed Breakfast and Evening Meal. We arrived about 4:30pm and were booked in and shown to our room by very friendly helpfull staff ,We stayed in a classic zip-link double room, number 25, an upgrade from a cosy double as in original offer.
The room was a good size and very clean, as was the bathroom ,nice and warm with white fluffy towels. Our evening meal was excellent, the portions were not huge but with four courses to get through there was more than enough to satisfy moste appetites .Then on to coffee and little home made victoria sponge cakes, relaxing in the lounge infront of a roaring open fire on a chilly November evening- what could be better!!
We both slept very well in the lovely comfy bed,the room was not too hot as we could control the heat via rad thermostat ,and NO NOISE !! we enjoyed it so much we stayed a fourth night in room 241 over in the annex, it was also very nice with a view over the lake from the rooms huge patio doors and balcony. The bathroom was a bit disappointing but functional with lots of hot water and great pressure for the shower ,could do with an upgraid but this did not detract from our lovely stay.

We booked a special offer in a Cosy Double.
It was certainly that, I forgot how small a double bed can be. The bathroom looked like it had been updated some years ago but the olive ( 1970's) bath suite had not been changed. Room Garden 1 ( 206?) had a door to the garden which had been sealed off and with it being single glazed had a lot of moisture on it and black mould on the carpet around the door.
The lounge, conservatory and bar / reception has seating for about 30+ people and this is not enough for the amount of people they can book in to the hotel.
The hotel could do with a spring clean - sat in the sofa next to the bar and saw dead spiders and cob weds on the radiator and then looked up to see more cob webs on the ceiling - conservatory, when the lamps are on the cob webs stand out - more above the peace lilies to the left of the bay window in the dining room. I was not looking for them but they stand out.

Breakfast was great and evening meal was very nice but a little on the small side. I found the drinks a bit on the dear side for a 3* hotel, red wine started at about £18, pre-dinner drink of Cave £7.50.
Staff very good, location good.
Would I stay again, after talking to other people it sounded like they had much nicer rooms than we did so if I could get one of the rooms on the web site, yes I would stay again.

We had a meal in the restaurant at Hillthwaite House Hotel whilst staying in Ambleside. The décor in the restaurant was quite dated and lacking in atmosphere. Staff were quite efficient but lacking any warmth. The menu was quite extensive including lamb, sea bass, chicken, cod and fillet steak ( although there was a supplement for this option) The starters arrived and mine, salmon fillet with beetroot was really really tiny. It was very tasty but the portion size would have been just about adequate to make two canapés, and to class it as a starter was misleading. The lamb main course was just about OK but the sea bass which my partner had was again small and totally lacking in flavour. We overheard resident also saying that this was tasteless and they were not at all happy with their meal. Desserts were just about OK, but my cheese and biscuits was served with three really small biscuits. We would not go back here either for a meal or in the hotel and cannot recommend it.

Thank you for your review and as always we welcome constructive criticism. I was a little shocked to read this review as I feel that your comments are unfounded and realistically, do not reflect on the whole dining experience. In all honesty, we receive excellent feedback on our five course fine dining menu and in particular, the staff. Maybe if you ever did come back to the Hillthwaite you could try something off our bar menu which would be suited more to your taste.

A warm welcome, cosy lounge with wonderful views and comfortable bedrooms. Service in the dining room shows attention to detail. The breakfasts are excellent, and five course evening meal offers a wide choice of beautifully prepared food with a good wine list. We return again and again, as do many others.

A quality venue in a quality location. All decor and fabrics and furnishings in very good condition. Food to an excellent standard. No real complaints. Food service slightly slow on one of the two evenings but we would definitely return.

It was our first visit to the Lake District and we chose this hotel after reading several reviews. It turned out to be an excellent choice and we thoroughly enjoyed our short break. It was obvious that the management team select the staff for their professionalism and everyone was very friendly and courteous. We had booked the 2 night 'Autumn Escape' which included dinner and the quality and selection of food was excellent. The only downside is the Classic Room was a little on the small side.

Just had our second visit, this time with two very good friends. My wife celebrated her birthday on the 20th October and wanted to go somewhere special for two days. It was no contest! we have been here before and knew what an excellent hotel Hillthwaite House is. The room we had in the annex was better than we expected and the view towards the lake and mountains was fabulous. The staff were very good, nothing was too much trouble for them, and the meals could not have been any better. The hotel has a warm comfortable feel to it .and it is very easy to relax in the lounge with a glass of wine or a pint of locally brewed beer.We had a very good two days break and it was a good ending to my wifes birthday celebrations, looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Would recommend annex or south facing room.
