“Lovely Hotel, stunning views”
Reviewed 29 May 2014 via mobile

Just got home from a two night stay in their cosy double room which came with dinner one night and breakfast on both days; got it on a groupon deal for under £200, would highly recommend.

The decor, food and staff were amazing-very accommodating and even included free afternoon tea!

Thanks

This is our third time at Hillthwaite House over a period of several years and we enjoyed it just as much as the previous times. All the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is great and the rooms we have had have been warm and comfortable. A cream tea is given free as a welcome, I think this is a nice touch. The style of hotel is of a big house with stairs and corridors to negotiate which gives it an air of individuality. The garden and the views from the terrace are lovely. The location is good for walking to Windermere and Bowness (for the lake ferries) and Ambleside is a short drive away. You can catch a local bus at the bottom of the street which takes you to various places of interest relating to Wordsworth...this is well worth doing. Of course if you like hiking it's an easy location from which to get to good walking areas. I would recommend Hilthwaite House ... just be prepared to put on a few pounds in weight due to the great chef.

Thank you for your extensive review. I am sure that the other TA readers appreciate your comments in relation to what you can do in the local area. We pride ourselves on offering a friendly, homely atmosphere and like our individuality. The hotel was once a grand house so it is bursting with history and character. Its one of the many reasons that guests, like yourselves keep coming back. We hope to see you again for your fourth visit.

Wow indeed!! We were blown away by this review so thank you for your lovely comments. Its true you can't please everybody 100% of the time but I am so glad you appreciated the Tendal Howe building. It is truly exquisite!! We look forward to welcoming you back soon and thank you for your kind comments regarding the staff which they always enjoy reading.

We recently stayed one night with an offer from Secret Escapes. I checked out the hotel's web site before booking so I thought I knew what to expect. The hotel itself is in great position, on a hill just outside of town so it offers lovely views. It is also only a short walk (10-15 mins) into either Windermere or Bowness - just be aware that there is a bit of a climb back to the hotel, but it's not too bad. We arrived early and were offered full use of the hotel facilities until our room was ready. We were also given a voucher to claim our Cream Scones at a later time. It may sound picky, but I'd have much preferred it if they could have found a way to offer them to us without giving us a voucher. It sort of highlighted that we were on a special deal! That said, the scones were really fresh and lovely and we enjoyed them whilst sitting on the sunny terrace.
When we eventually went to our room (Superior - No 36), it was through a maze of doors and corridors. Some of the hotel looked as it it had been refurbished, but where we were going looked quite tired. Needless to say, I was disappointed with the room. It did have a great view, a large bed and a jacuzzi bath, but it looked tired and the furniture was horribly old and tatty. There was a window seat, but it was too narrow to sit on to enjoy the view, and there was not much space in the room. I did go down to the desk to make sure that we were in a superior room, and was told yes. I pointed out that the photo of our room was on their web site against a Double Room and the Superior Rooms looked quite different, but was told that the web site is being updated.
The food is really nice. there was a good choice at dinner and again at breakfast. The staff are super friendly and really helpful, apart from one dinner waiter whose response to a lady who asked why she couldn't have a window seat, told her, in front of all the other diners, "those people have paid more that,s why they have a table with a view" Perhaps that's why we didn't have a great table then either!
I'd maybe stay again, but I wouldn't pay full price and I would definitely ring the hotel first to check on the room I was staying in.

Room Tip: Check that the room has been refurbished.

Thank you for your review. The hotel is scheduled for a major refurbishment in December and we have started on some of the rooms now after completing our Tendal Howe building. This is obviously an on-going process but we aim to finish most of the rooms by the end of the year. It is a shame you felt this room was dated as it is overall, a lovely room with fantastic views. I was surprised about the comments in the restaurant and have since spoken to the staff about this as we treat all of our guests the same no matter what offer they are using. I also believe that the guests you are talking about were seated in a window table anyway so I am a little confused over this comment. I hope you will try us again in the future and thank you for the positive comments you made in relation to the staff - they certainly appreciate it.

Recently had a lovely stay at this hotel on a voucher. We had a twin classic room with a view of nothing in particular but it was lovely and quiet with quality fittings and had the most amazing comfortable beds. Food was superb and as a non meat eater I still had plenty of choice. They do have the same menu each night but plenty of choice and a special menu with several choices that changes every night. It is most definitely four courses with canapés and warms rolls on top of that. We had cream scones on arrival and also a bottle of wine with the meal on one of the nights included in the price. There is plenty of seating in several comfortable relaxing rooms and the staff were very courteous and pleasant. All in all, good value for money and I would certainly return. If I had one very minor point it would be to perhaps make the hotel sign more visible from the road.

Thank you for your great review and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your first visit...hopefully, the first of many! In relation to the signage, we have some on order bearing our new logo so hopefully you will see an improvement next time. We also have some amazing offers on our website throughout the year so worth checking those out before you book. Thanks again for the feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back.
