“great stay”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Booked this hotel through Secret Escapes 1 week before travelling. Having never used Secret Escapes or stayed at the Hillthwaite before we weren't sure what to expect. Our expectations were exceeded. We were allocated a newly refurbished superior room with a balcony with superb views. Beautiful ! The bathroom had mood lighting and a tv and the shower was roomy and powerful. We were offered afternoon tea (scones, jam and cream) which we took on the terrace overlooking the lake. Made use of the swimming pool (which was perfectly adequate for a relaxed swim) and the sauna. Very nice.
Staff seemed friendly, polite and competent.
Evening meal was fantastic with plenty to choose from. Breakfast the same.
Would not hesitate to stay at the Hillthwaite again.

Room Tip: Ask for the superior balcony room

We have just stayed at The Hillthwaite again. This will be our third year in a row now. Can't praise the staff enough, very friendly, excellent at their job and talkative without being overbearing. Recption staff were pleasant at all times and have a good knowledge of the area. The rooms in the annexe have been refurbished and it is worth paying extra to stay in the. Would recommend room 241. The food was excellent and good choice of daily specials. The views from the dining room, coffee longe and terrace are excellent. Would highly recommend this hotel for couples ! !

Room Tip: Book a superior room with a lake view or a room in the annexe. The higher you go the better the view...

We stayed at the Hillthwaite for two nights with a deal from travel zoo. The hotel and it's staff was lovely, in a very good location, with excellent quality food.

The only thing I would say is that if you don't like cooked breakfast, the continental is very limited. There are cereals, and some fruit such as melon, prunes and peaches, but there is no yogurt selection, or pastries. This is fine, but you would definitely be better off having the cooked breakfast.

We would stay here again.

Thank you for your good review and your comment relating to breakfast. We offer a selection of fruit. (Grapefruit, Prunes, Peaches and Melon) as well as natural yoghurt. We do offer pastries but these are on the breakfast menu along with the waffle with berries and mascarpone. Unfortunately, you do have to order these with the waiter. We will certainly look into our breakfast selection but thank you for raising the point and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

We stayed one night on a Secret Escapes dinner, bed and breakfast deal which was fantastic value.

Check-in was quick and friendly and we had room 11, a large room in the main hotel building with wonderful views and a 6 ft, very comfortable bed. The bathroom was slightly tired, but the jacuzzi bath was very lively and the shower was good and powerful. The public areas were very pleasant. We had drinks in the sunshine on the terrace, overlooking the colourful gardens and the gorgeous view.

The dining room is very large and enjoys the same great views. The four course meal was very good indeed, as was breakfast (I can recommend the eggs benedict). At both meals the staff seemed a bit over stretched, but were friendly.

We didn't see the swimming pool as this was a quick stopover on our way south, but we would definitely return and use the Hillthwaite as a base to see more of the Lakes.

Arrived at 11.30 am to be greeted by a receptionist who sat in the back room and never got out of her seat to greet us. She said we were early and that she hadn't even done her 'check outs'. We said we just wanted to let her know that we would be leaving the car in the car park until late on in the day. Not the best of greetings! Not even the offer of a cup of coffee!

Returned later to be checked in by a gentleman who thank goodness was friendlier than the earlier receptionist and showed us to our room. It was clean and adequate. The ceiling needed some attention with regards to decoration. The only decent feature was the bathroom which was modern. Didn't think it was value for what we had paid.

The breakfast however was lovely with a good choice.

Would like to try elsewhere on our next visit to The Lakes .

Thank you for your comments regarding reception. We were very disappointed to read that you found reception unfriendly as we receive nothing but praise for reception from guests. We sincerely apologise that we failed to provide this on your arrival. I am sorry that you didn't find us value for money and I would like to think that you may try us again in the future once the refurbishment takes place. We are, after all, one of the best competitively priced hotels in Windermere,

My Husband & I stayed at this Hotel previously some years ago. The food at the time was faultless, very nice although i felt the Hotel could have done with a little TLC in parts. So decided to go again for Sunday Lunch for my Birthday recently. I must stay i was pleased to see that some refurbishment had been undertaken. Coffee and home made scones when we arrived - a very nice touch. The Sunday lunch was lovely, could highly recommend, Staff very attentive without being overbearing. It was a lovely sunny day and the Views from the Hotel are wonderful. . The receptionist was very friendly as were the other staff. Coffee and scones in late afternoon before we left. Upon leaving we booked a Weekend in September for our Wedding Anniversay, so looking forward to that.

I booked this as a last minute offer from the hotel's own website so I was aware that the bedroom we would be offered was one of the basic rooms.

It was on the ground floor just off reception and had no outlook. Comfortable beds, well equipped bathroom. I am unable to comment on other rooms but I would strongly recommend paying the extra for a more scenic view.

Rooms 1, 3, 4 are ground floor basic rooms situated off reception and the hotel bar. You may experience some noise at night as the ladies, gentleman and disabled toilets are situated in this area.

The only other negative comment I can make about this hotel is that the swimming pool is very shallow for 50% and it is impossible to swim in it - but it is very suitable for children.

Now the good points. Superb, helpful and well trained staff.
The lounge and dining rooms are located in the front of the hotel so you experience wonderful views over the hills and lake. The lounge has been refurbished and is very comfortable ( as is the conservatory) and the dining room is spacious.

The food was excellent and I would recommend dining in the evening to experience the 4 course (plus coffee) Table d'hote menu. The breakfast was also excellent I would recommend the Cumberland ham breakfast.

The litmus paper test - would I stay again - Yes definitely

Room Tip: Just be aware that you get what you pay for. If you pay for the classic room it will be a classic r...
