Having stayed here a week ago for 3 nights on my own, purely for the purposes of walking on the nearby fells, I was initially dismayed with the impression that one needed a car to either get there or leave. This impression soon dispelled though by a helpful waitress at breakfast, who pointed me to the boat station right next door to the hotel - in a touristy Lake District Visitors Centre, from where one could get a ferry into Ambleside or along the lake to Bowness.
My stay in the hotel was v quiet - to say the staff are unobtrusive is perhaps an understatement. They only appear when you want them or ring a bell, making you feel that its actually a large deserted B&B. The B&B feeling is reinforced at dinner, where the food is plentiful and heavy (for my tastes). The dining room is like someones home dining room and its easy to feel a little uncomfortable as if intruding on a someone else's quaint domestic scene.
The rooms are excellent and clean (certainly 5 star standard) and the service good when needed. Its ideal for someone who wants that "i'm not in a hotel" feel. I enjoyed the stay and would probably go back again. After a day walking in the fells though, its sometimes nice to have a little more life and bustle around you in the evening.
I hesitate to say the hotel is inexpensive, as thats usually taken by the management as an invitation to bump up the prices, but for someone used to staying in good hotels, paying £200 for 3 nights stay including breakfast and dinner everyday (and a few large scotches) is a bargain.
