“lovely "get away" hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2014

We have just returned from 3 nights at the Herons Reach which was a return visit as we stayed here last year. Check-in process was quick and easy and our Family Room was lovely.
This hotel has great leisure facilities - both indoor and (heated!!) outdoor pools, steam room, sauna, huge gym, squash courts and a golf course.
The hotel is located next door to the Zoo and is set in its own grounds which are surrounded by a park and a residential area. Taxi to the seafront is around £7.00 which is worth it to be set away from the busyness of the main resort.
If you don't want to head into Blackpool on a night time, you can choose to eat in the hotel restaurant or pub, or there are a range of family friendly places a short drive away.
Although we travelled as a family with friends, this hotel would suit couples equally as well.

Stayed here for a long weekend along with family. Rooms clean but a little tired along with the outside of the building. However rooms apart the reception staff were very friendly and check in and checking out went very smoothly with no hold ups. The meal in the restaurant on the first evening (Italian) was average. We asked for the meal for our grandson to come out with our starters but it didn't so we had to ask for it to be brought out. On the second evening we dined in the Victory pub - once again food average. However there were one or two stag parties and golf parties in and there language was rather choice and noisy but the staff would not go over and ask them to keep the noise down. Leisure facilities very good. Would we stay here again. Yes perhaps although I don't think we would eat there.

Room Tip: our rooms were on the 2nd floor overlooking the outdoor swimming pool and we didn't have any pro...

Over the years I've stayed at several DeVeres Village hotels and never had any cause for complaint, Yes some rooms are better than others, yes the food can vary somewhat, but overall and importantly given what you pay (circa £60-100 for Bed and breakfast and use of leisure facilities) I have had no cause for complaint.

With this in mind my fiance and I booked a booked a room at Herons Reach on Valentines day 2014. All was well, reception fast and efficient, the room was what we had come to expect apart from the fact the view out was that of a pebble covered flat roof dotted with large extractor fans whirring away.

Dinner, hand made pizza, was ok but nothing more than that again not a big deal so us love birds retired early only to be subject to constant banging of doors and noise from below and I mean every few seconds and this went on and on and on. I note an earlier reviewer commented on this also so it begs the question if you know there is a problem why ignore it?

Despite it being late we regrettably had had enough and rang reception and asked to be moved. To the credit of the hotel staff we were moved although packing our bags and moving rooms at near 11pm is a Valentines day is a memory I'd sooner forget.

Ok, so we returned home and after discussing with the staff how we felt our "special night" had been spoilt we were pleased to receive confirmation that by way of an apology and to make up for our poor experience we would be offered a complimentary stay.

So last weekend us two love birds duly went on our travels to Herons Reach to hopefully have a much more pleasant stay. How wrong those hopes turned out to be.

The greeting at reception was ok but the room, what a disaster, ok it was north facing with a small window and freezing cold, that I could have forgiven as I'm more than capable of turning the thermostat up but we had been placed in a twin room!!! and they thought it perfectly acceptable to just push the single beds together and expect us to avoid the joint in the beds. "all our standard doubles are like this" was the response. What utter rubbish which I can testify from my many visits to other Village hotels. After some discussion we were moved to a regular double room with a regular double bed.

We were offered a complimentary dinner to make up for the oversight so once again whilst disappointed with the room we were happy with the goodwill gesture.

We attended dinner and being a Saturday night we could see the restaurant was fairly busy. Our table was tucked away and we looked forward to a nice romantic meal. We waited, and waited and waited and eventually were served our starters approx 45 min. from ordering.Starters were okay and with the time edging past 9.00pm we were rather hungry and looked forward to our mains Unfortunately almost a further hour past before our mains arrived, We are talking nothing more extravagant than a pizza with some fries. The pizza I have previously eaten here was ok and clearly given its irregular shaped base was prepared in the kitchen. What i had in front of me was a factory produced frozen pizza, hard, lacking topping and and kind of flavour flavour to make matters worse the chips were unpeeled and rock hard in the middle. I persevered with the pizza but asked for the fries to be replaced. 20 minutes later with the restaurant quiet and no sign of our fries we called it a day. What a disappointment.

Next morning we attended breakfast at 8.00am feeling rather hungry. The staff seemed a bit thin on the ground but being self service it shouldn't have had any impact. We requested coffee and returned with our full english. Hmm problem no 1. The sausages were raw in the middle. The plates were stone cold which resulted in the at best warm breakfast being cold in less than 2 minutes, There were no sauces laid out, The toaster was not functioning properly, the supposed "fresh" orange tasted like a disgusting mix of chemicals and our coffee eventually arrived 15 minutes after ordering despite there being at most 6 tables occupied.

It became almost humorous to the point where we both agreed we'll just pack up and go and put this shambolic affair behind us.

My partner did raise these issues with the management and suggested it may be a reasonable request to ask for a refund. This was declined a further correspondence will need to be sent to head office.

Trying to be objective in part I can compliment the staff who have tried to resolve a sequence of errors and problems but I also feel that collectively the staff have let us down and should have been more on the button so to speak particularly when they say we would like an opportunity to put right our previous failings

Will we visit Herons Reach again?, probably not but I do fully expect to visit other Village Hotels in fact in the very near future.

Perhaps we were just unlucky this time, there again perhaps not?

A super break away. The outdoor pool was an added bonus. Staff worked really hard to cope with a busy hotel. Breakfast was great. Would definitely return. The pub was entertaining staff again hard working.

We stayed in the resort for a few days while running the Blackpool Half Marathon and it was the best place to base yourself in for the visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the facilities were very good - the Spa facility gave a great sports massage and the pool was a perfect way to relax after the run.

I would recommend it to anyone and def. stay there again.
