“Holiday from hell”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

Me and my partner took my 4 year old grandson away for 1 night on the 28.05.14 and booked this hotel however on our arrival we were told that our room would not be ready for at least 3 hours after we had requested an early check in because of our luggage and the little one. After being given the key for the room to put our luggage in on opening the door the room was absolutely discustingly and filthy. Came back at 2pm collected the key to room no0353 and upon our opening the door to our room we were shocked to say the least. The description given of the hotel on the website are a million miles away from what we were faced with. Curtains were shabby with linings full of holes and the view from window was dominated by a metal roof covered in bird faeces.Food was very poor for that standard of hotel. We decided not to have any food and opted for a drink only. This was not a very happy experience for me and my partner and our grandson. This hotel is in dire need of repairs and the staff could do with customer service training. This is only a brief summary but I could go into more details if needed.

We booked a 2 night stay here with friends, on checking in the reception staff could not be bothered and just handed room key. Our room was very old and dated we had no view but a brick wall, the window had bird mess on the inside. We could not use the shower as the hot and cold tap did not mix so it was boiling or freezing, the cold tap in the hand basin would not turn off. The bedding was not what I would call clean and white. The carpet was thread bear and very dirty. I think overall this hotel is in need of lots of repairs and I would not recommend staying here.

After reading all the dire reviews for this hotel my friends and I were dreading the weekend. We were booked through a group for an organised weekend, five females in two rooms. On arrival the reception staff, Sarah and Sam, greeted us in a very friendly manner and directed us to our rooms. The lift is small and if you can't manage the stairs there can be a wait, but there's no big rush on a weekend away!! The rooms we had were large and very clean, with really comfy beds and the power shower was wonderful, the water was the right temperature. The room did look out over walls and rooftops but we weren't there to look at the view, there was a t.v. if you wanted to look at something. The service in the bar and dining room was excellent, the food very tasty and served with a smile. All the staff were very friendly and helpful , it seemed nothing was too much trouble . The breakfast buffet was refilled frequently and for the evening meal a lovely waitress arranged tables so that we could sit with friends.
The decor is quite dated but it seems that it is being done up gradually and the art deco bedroom furniture is quite special. We found everything very clean and having read awful reviews on here were very pleasantly surprised at how lovely everything in the Savoy Hotel was. We had a wonderful weekend.
It's not a five star hotel but it certainly has five star service.

Dear Guest, many thanks for taking the time to post a review.

Your comments are very much appreciated and have been passed on to the Staff. Its good to get a balanced view on these matters. Sometimes one has to experience the Hotel for them selves rather than rely on dubious inaccurate reports.

I was pleased to read that you found Sarah and Sam greeted you in a friendly manner, they are two long serving members of staff who will be pleased to see that their hard work and friendly attitudes haven't gone un-noticed.

We look forward to welcoming you back.

Seriously do they expect people to pay to stay in this filthy hovel!!! Shocking dirty and filthy. We paid £40.00 for bed and breakfast, yes cheap but OMG when we got there the reception staff were really friendly but we noticed everywhere was shabby and run down. We checked in as it was only for 1 night but soon checked out. There was poo wiped on the bathroom floor and the shower was filthy!

The Savoy is a venue for a Company called "Select Events" It is run by a lovely group of people led by a couple named Pricilla and Alan Jones. Nothing is too much trouble as they make sure everything is perfect for their group within the hotel .We meet up twice a year now and have good fun with excellent artistes and games. The food this time,20/ 22June was very good, Evening meal not as generous as previously but good quality. The breakfast buffet was excellent with a constant filling up of cooked items and fruit , cereals etc.Sadly nothing can be done about the one lift as it is a listed building, this is a big problem when leaving owing to congestion with luggage etc.We were lucky getting a corner front room and though work does need doing it doesn't detract from your comfort .

Room Tip: Rooms at the front and sides are best of course. Rooms at the back and middle are hot and dark

The savoy has seen better days, the deal we had was £42 for 2 for dbb which for the food aspect was good but the room was awful. Looked out onto a brick wall round the back. No ashtray even though it was a smoking room, ended up being given a sugar bowl, nice. Evening meal lovely but breakfast was a bit off. Sausage tasted off and bacon was that thin it had all stuck together, apart from that ok. One chair in the room great for one and no hot water at all. Could not have a wash or shower as water freezing cold at 8.30am. Not impressed.

Room Tip: Sea view best

Booked for 2 nights with some friends. On checking in the reception staff were offhand and rude, we wanted a coffee but there were no staff available, eventually we got our coffee after a wait. The whole place is tired and in desperate need of repa]r and renovation. Not enough staff, breakfast was very hit and miss, not skimmed milk shortage of butter and marmalade and no one seemed to notice that this and the fruit needed replenishing. As for the rooms!!!! The curtains were ragged and the linoleum on the bathroom floor was torn.there were damp patches where wet must have got in. On the plus side the water was very hot and the bed comfortable, but hairs in the bath were NOT acceptable. Keycards had to be reprogrammed very time we used them!!! Not to be recommended at all.
