“Under new ownership and highly recommended”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

I think Laura W would be pleased with the new owners of the Valron.
Robbie and Dave took over 2 weeks before we stayed there on the weekend of the 25th - 27th October '13, and were extremely welcoming.
We were supposed to be staying at a hotel around the corner, but we couldn't for our own reasons, (that's another review on trip advisor).
The Valron was recommended to us by another hotelier who had no vacancies, and although the rooms' décor was very tired and dated, it was clean, the beds were new and the linen was fresh and clean.
Robbie and Dave have plans to refurbish in January. Can't wait to see the finished result!! Will be visiting next year to see it. However, despite this our stay was superb and nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel is in a great location, very central and a few minutes walk to the beach.
Highly recommended for the hospitality alone.
Good luck to the new owners!!!

My partner and I visited Blackpool via Gee Vee travel and were told that the hotel had new owners and it was going to be quite a new experience all around, having been the previous year and found the value for money really good, we wondered what the new owners could do to improve it, and while last year it was evidently a little worn down and tired, we were pleased with it. Upon arriving, we were greeted with tea and coffee and didn't have to worry about lugging bags up to the rooms, keys were handed out promptly and now include late keys which is a small but excellent change, the entirety of the beds in the hotel had been ripped out and brand new ones put in, making for comfortable nights sleep, our room was well furnished and replenished with new tea and coffee facilities daily, if we hadn't left the bed in such a tip I'm certain it would've been made up for us every day too. The bar area has been revamped and now has quality beers and spirits available for reasonable prices. Food was great and promptly served, but most importantly you can simply tell that the new owner really wants to make the Valron a well known and reputable place to stay, his attitude is wickedly positive towards it and we were both made to feel welcome despite being a good 30-40 years younger than most of the guests! You really can't go wrong with the Valron for the money you pay. Don't expect the Ritz but you won't be dissapointed, for a certainty. Location is great too, smack bang in the middle really of the piers, slightly south. you can step out the door and go whichever way you fancy, knowing you won't have to walk too far back. Handy newsagents just round the corner too!

Very impressed, looking forward to the further improvements that will be made by the new owners.

Room Tip: Higher floors better for more privacy if you're a young couple.

Plenty of brochures of places to visit, also went on a day trip to chorley market. June sheffield.

At first they seemed friendly but soon you can hear them in the back moaning about the guests. There wasn't a vegetarian choice and on the first night it was a turkey dinner, I gave it to my daughter. They said they didn't mind making a vegetarian alternative but then you could over hear them complaining and on the last night I found scampi in my vege burger which I suspect was deliberate because it would explain why the burger was broken up when they brought it to me. They rushed the guests while eating and seemed to be put out when my daughter said she hadn't finished, a couple of minutes later the plate was rushed away from her. The bedroom tea and coffee facilities are only complimentary on the 1st night and you are instructed to buy your own.

On one evening my daughter and I were locked out at 11.30pm when inside there is a sign saying they are open til 12 midnight. They let us in quickly enough though.

I think this isn't a place for young people, they have their regulars and I get the impression that they'd rather keep it that way. We weren't made to feel very welcome.

The location was great, near the beach and amusements and walking distance to central and south pier. Our holiday was overall really nice and my daughter and I had fun. Price was very low.

On the morning of departure while some guests were still finishing their breakfast they owner shouted 'come on now I've had enough of ya, I've had enough of ya now' and I didn't get the impression he was joking.

The rooms were small, but cosy but I wonder if they are routinely cleaned because there was tissue under one of the beds and marks on the mirrors.

I doubt I'll want to go back there because they made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. But if you are older, traditional and go to bed really early then you will like this place.

We are new owners. Due to trip advisor not helping in anyway whatsoever in removing posts that had noting to do with us running or taking over the business I will clarify this .this post was left when the previous owners still run the hotel. We have owned this business since October 2013. Any comments before this time had nothing to do with this. Also please note we do cater for vegetarians . All customers are treated the same . With respect .

For our Easter break we were recommended to go to the Valron Hotel with Gee Vee, the price was very reasonable which included all travel, very well organised from start to finish .We found the Valron was a very well family run hotel, food was always hot and plenty. Our room was clean an adequate to our needs,in the evenings we spent in the bar where we never laughed so much and met some lovely people.
The landlord joined in with bingo, quizzes, darts and music , we have rebooked again for July.

We booked a holiday with Gee Vee travel, to go to the Valron Hotel,Blackpool on the 10th March 2013.
Gee Vee travel are a local travel company, who with their own coaches provide holidays around the U/K & abroad, having booking offices in Barnsley, Goldthorpe, Sheffield & Chesterfield. They have a unique system, where you are picked up at your home by mini-bus & taken to the coach firms coach depot, & returned home again after your holiday, this is a very good service, which keeps the client / holiday price down.
We paid £119 per person for a 6 day half-board, coach & home transfers, which included 2 trips out, which on paper looks a bargain.
On sunday 10th March we were picked up at 9.15am by mini-bus from our home, calling for other clients en-route to the coach depot at Stairfoot,Barnsley. When setting off from home it was snowing, but not a heavy flurry. There were 27 other passengers on board the coach all in their late 60's / early 70's, and then 4 in our party, in our early sixties, so a total of 31 passengers & driver.
The coach left at 10am, calling at a services enroute to Blackpool, for 40 minutes, we arrived at the Valron hotel at 12.45, so travelling time was 2hrs 05mins, which was very good.We were met at the hotel by owners Terry (wife) & Gordon, we were given a key for room 2, our friends another room, along with the key we were given a tv remote for our room television.
The stairs in the hotel were very steep, there was no lift, I had problems getting our luggage upstairs, the owners Terry, who was 59, & Gordon 68 couldn't help anyone, there were some disabled people on the holiday, who really found it hard to get up & down the stairs.
When we got to our room, we found a tallboy wardrobe, with 24 coat-hangers,a small double bed, a single bed, a 4 drawer unit, with a small TV on, with a kettle, cups, cheap tea bags,a few catering milks, sugar sachets. The bathroom consisted of a large bath, a cracked sink, & toilet, that had a old fashioned water cistern, which held more than 2 times a normal cistern would hold, ( hate to think what the water bill was ), there were 2 old bath towels, & 2 old hand towels, all different colours, toilet & sink mats were different colours.
The beds had a matress cover, which had a wool blanket between cover & matress, the cover was dark grey,as was the other top sheet, then a duvet on top. the bed was old.when we got in it that night at each end, we both sunk into the middle, there was no room to manovere around the beds. The room was tired & required a refurbishment, we looked onto the front of the hotel & had a view of the sea, the small window frames that could be opened, were held together in all 4 corners with metal strips, the windows didn't close fully.
The wiring was old & in places was taped up together, the light switch was the old round type from the 1940 / 50's, the hotel needs a total overhaul, including rewiring. Our friends were given a room, which they declined, & they moved next door to us, their room having a shower. The hotel was 2 hotels knocked into 1, having a seperate dining room, bar area room & a dry lounge area full of high backed chairs, like the shackleton chairs in nursing homes.
We went for a walk calling in Wetherspoons for a drink, at the Albert & Lion, coming back for our evening meal, which was at 5pm, the other guests were always stood waiting for the restaurant to open a long time before, we were allocated a table for our party of 4. The table was deep brown varnised, with a centre red table clothe, so leaving some of the tablebare, there were a table mat for main plates, but our side plates stuck to the varnished table.
There were 2 pots of tea, which were prepared before the restaurant opened, so not piping hot, our 1st sunday evening meal was veg soup, with 3 very thin sliches of bread between us, followed by roast pork, fresh veg, & a sweet of a cheap apple pie out of a packet of 6, with custard. We had our meal, & watched in dis-belief has some of the women pensioners start clearing up & setting the tables for breakfast. ( We later found out that the same party of pensioners come to this hotel regular, so muck in with jobs. ) We went down to wetherspoons, at the Auctioneer for the evening.
Next morning we went for breakfast, which we had ordered the previous evening, we ordered cornflakes & a full breakfast, the breakfast was at 9am, but we smelt the toast being done at 8.20am, so when we went to eat it was cold, so was the tea, which was also done to early, the cornflakes were already poured into a dish for us, the breakfast consisted of 2 rashers of lean bacon, egg, beans & fried bread, to which was good, ( You could change the breakfast if you wanted, but there were no mushrooms ).
We went on a trip to Clevelys at 10am, this is a nice little town, with good shops, & returned at 1pm, the coach driver Barry taking us.The driver dropped us off in the centre of Blackpool, where we went into wetherspoons.
Monday evening we had a choice of Chicken or Ham, along with ministrone soup & a very soggy apple crumble.Went out to Auctioneer wetherspoons in the evening for a drink & to do the quiz.
Tuesday after breakfast we had a coach trip to Chorley market, which again was a good day out, calling at the sweet factory on the way back, which again was very good.
During the week the breakfasts were o/k, except for cold tea & toast, some of the evening meals were a big let down, where fish in parsley sauce was served, the fish was out of packets, costing a pound for 4 in freezer shop, also packet fish / chips the fish all soggy, meat pie, which was a pound pie cut up from freezer shop, chips soggy. The best meal was thusday evening when we had roast beef, but at least fresh veg was used all week.
The hotel had 2 nights with entertainment, having a artist each time, we didn't stay in for these, we did stay in for a darts tournament, which wasn't bad, drinking the Valron bitter at £2.80a pint, but with the wetherspoons selling Guiness at £2.39 a pint on a regular basis, there was no contest
One couple had a surprise, & were very lucky when their electric shower blew-up, also another disabled couple had a shock when the old lady got on the bed, it collasped & she was stuck inside the bed.
Has I said earlier most of this group around 26 people come at least 3 to 4 times a year, & some 6 times a year, so they have come accustomed to the hotel, being they have their own seats in the bar, do jobs, & even walk the owners dogs, some never been to another hotel at all, thinking the Valron is the bee's knee's, the hotel does not accept any other guests, they just have the one coach firm booking the hotel, so the hotel opens & closes during the year.
Thinking what the hotel owners receive in payment, the coach firm charges £119 per person, their overheads are the transfers of clients to coach, costs of the coach & drivers wages, plus trips out, & bookings, over the six days which covers all costs.
The hotel provides 5 breakfasts & 5 evening meals, bed, electric, gas & water, plus employs a waitress & a cleaner, but after the coach firms overheads I would say the hotel only receives around £8 to £10 a day per person, to which is not a lot. All the pensioners in the hotel think what they get for their money is good value, to which it is to some people, it seems the people meeting up is more important to the pensioners, than the conditions of the hotel, so be it has some of them live alone.
I can't fault the Coach company, because they do provide what these people want, by being a cheap holiday, the pensioners can visit so many times a year, I know the coach firm do visit better hotels, has my wife has used them previously.
I would say if a hotel inspector visited the Valron hotel, he would not be impressed with its condition, especially on the electrics issue, the cleaning is not up to standard also, all the cleaner did was change towels, empty rubbish bins, provide toilet rolls, clean inside bathroom. The bedrooms were never hoovered, in fact my wife found some childrens hancuffs under the bed, don't know how long they had been there, the bed sheets were never changed.
We will use the coach firm again, with its great door to door service, but will never venture to the Valron hotel again. !
Simply not up to standard !

Room Tip: Maybe take some bed sheets with you, also take some towels like we did, wish we had taken bed sheets.

We were a party of 13 on a weekend trip with Gee Vee Coaches. Gordon & Terry made every one welcome & efficiently sorted out rooms, keys & remotes. The food was good & efficiently served -piping hot. The rooms are in need of some TLC but clean & warm (needed in Nov!) All the guests were friendly too. Late keys on request for return after midnight. Mealtimes are set times but we had no problem with this. We just warned Terry we were out for the evening meal on the Saturday. Five minute walk to seafront. Would definately stay again.
