4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2014

stayed overnight at this hotel , after seeing the show mama mia , with a friend and to be quite honest it was the best value for money i have had in a long time , evening dinner was good, breakfast good lunch good cant really find anything to moan about, it got 2 stars maybe another one would be good , all the staff were friendly and helpful , nothing was to much trouble , ok so the decor was not up to date really trendy, no problem clean and comfort is the most important well done and thank you for a very plesant visit .

love stopping on blackpools northshore so this hotel was in the perfect location ,free parking which is a must for us and being able to check in early 12.30pm instead of 3pm was great !the room was clean and bright and a nice size even though we had only booked a economy doudle 309 even had two windows and a side sea view . breakfast was very busy tables too close together not much buffet choice had to ask for fruit juice the cooked option was quick in coming nice and hot well presented average quality but tasty the staff were happy and friendly but had to be prompted on thiings like ketchup and us not having a menu and we wernt offer drinks refills or more toast and we felt breakfast between 8 and 9 not long enough for the amount of people staying but overall a adequate experience ..overall we were very pleased with the total stay but think the hotel is more geared up for senior citizens rather than our age group 44 and 46 years

Stayed here in August for a weekend. The rooms are decorated very cheaply with chipboard and the beds are only small. The room was clean though.

We went for breakfast at 8.30 and the staff really struggle to cope with the numbers. There are no tables ready for anyone. The food was very average.

The reception staff are also ignorant and completely blanked me when I tried to check out. I ended up just leaving the key.

There are better hotels at these prices

This hotel is in a good location and appears to have had some work done since I last stayed here in 2010 or so however it is really letting itself down with some basic things that are easy to fix. We stayed four nights, we had originally booked three but the weather was so lovely we decided to stay an extra night.

The room we had looks nothing like the photographs and it appears that the right hand side of the hotel has had improvements made but the left hand side (which we stayed) has not. Out of use and damaged doors, socket areas cut out of walls, dated decor etc. To be honest though the prices were cheap, the hotel is two star, and these things may be expected. It does not however look anything like the online pictures!

The room itself was a let down due to the lack of attention to detail and basic cleanliness. Have a look at some of the pictures I have attached and you will see the contract between the hotel's pictures and the ones that we took. On arrival the room appeared dated but sufficient. As we started to use the room we started to uncover issues. Most if which were resolved eventually by the hotel staff but it was thse basics that in my opinion could (and should) be done without customer complaint.

The main concerns and issues we had were regarding basic cleaning and maintanance of items around the hotel. Some of these we resolved ourselves, other things were fixed by staff.
1 - Short and curly dark hairs inside the drawer, it obvously hadn't been cleaned inside - Yuck. This was complied with dusty bedside tables, the top had been cleaned and dusted but the shelf underneath had not and with the bible having a layer of dust.
2 - The soap dish in the shower had not been cleaned from the previous occupants, it has no drain so when we went to use the shower we found the dish full of cold water with a bar of now mushy soap at the bottom of it.
3 - A roof tile was missing showing the pipes etc (this was replaced and fixed)
4 - Dirty drain holes in the sink and shower, stained and with hairs in them.
5 - Old and tatty taps and toilet flush handle. These were corroded and gave the place an unclean feel. Replacing these would help improve the appearance of the place so much. Also the handle for the bathroom was old and broken it looked shabby and the door did not lock.
6 - We ran out of toilet roll in the middle of the night with no new rolls in the bathroom.
7 - The TV could have been installed with more attention to detail, tuck the wires behind the TV rather than hanging down.
8 - The worst thing though that really was disgusting was the cup in the bathroom. It made us feel a bit sick looking at it. It had horrible staining inside it and a kind of fur. Stains appeared to be long standing and it was clear that it had not been cleaned for a long time. We took it to reception and the next day we were given two plastic cups for the bathroom. I'm just glad I looked inside before putting my toothbrush in!

Breakfast was good, the food was tastey but the service is lacking any organisation. The staff were running about serving people with no order. People being served before others who had been waiting longer etc. The dining room service really needs to be improved as the food quality was pretty good. The bar area was nice and drink prices were reasonable.

Overall the hotel has potential to be so much more. A proper clean would help. The staff were friendly and helpful but the place feels like it lacks in management and organisation. I doubt we will return to this particular hotel as there are many others in the area for similar prices. Have a wee look at my pictures which are of the room and some of the issues I have mentioned.

Room Tip: Get a room on the right side of the hotel!

We recently stayed at the Chequers Plaza, we travelled as a group of friends and booked 4 rooms for 3 nights over a long weekend.
The hotel was recommended to us as a guest from our party had stayed there previously (Christmas last year) and thought it was very pleasant.

We booked 4 economy double rooms which, along with pictures of what looked like luxurious and cosy beds, advertised the following facilities - desk, heating, carpeted, hairdryer, free toiletries, toilet, bathroom, bathtub or shower, telephone, radio, flat screen TV, electric kettle, wake up service. Firstly not only did our room look nothing like the pictures it did not have a desk, a hairdryer, a telephone, a radio or free toiletries (unless you consider two bars of cheap soap each 6x4cm in size “toiletries”)?

Secondly the hotel policies say check in is 3pm, this is later than most other hotels but did not dissuade us from booking. Since I knew we would arrive quite early I did e-mail the hotel the week before our stay to ask if it would be possible for us to have an early check in as we intended to arrive around 1pm, they did reply and explained that they could not guarantee the rooms would be ready but we could leave our luggage safely at reception and enjoy our day.

This was not a problem at all however when we arrived we were told that our rooms would not be ready until 4pm! I did feel that this was taking the Michael just a little especially when we actually got into our rooms and saw the state of them!
Don’t get me wrong I was not expecting The Hilton, not by any stretch but I did expect a MIRROR in my room! Is it just me or would you not consider this a standard piece of furniture for a hotel room? Well as it happens the hotel clearly did not, as when my husband went to reception to ask why there wasn’t one and how they expected us to get ready for a night out he was told “I can’t help you”!!
I haven’t even mentioned that we had no TOWELS either, again standard in my eyes. I will give them their due though they did provide the towels once we asked but it does beg the question as to why they needed until 4pm to get our rooms ready?

Thirdly I want to point out (if the above doesn’t already) the deceitful way in which they advertise their hotel, it looks just the job when you walk in and I have to say we were quite impressed at first but when we were directed to the left hand side of the hotel where our rooms were located it was like walking into the House of Horrors!
This part of the hotel has clearly not been renovated in the same way the other side has but to charge the same price as all the other rooms is quite frankly scandalous. For £60 per night we could have stayed at a number of hotels with far more facilities and far more superior rooms than we got, our group paid £660 in total for the weekend – they most definitely saw us coming but one thing is for sure they will not see us coming again!...

Breakfast was disgusting, everything was deep fried and I mean everything, it was swimming in fat - gross!

Oh yeah and something else they offer on their advertisement is room service, come on room service I ask you, how the hell can I order room service when there is no telephone in my room??!!

If you want somewhere to stay in that location stay at The Cliffs, that's where we'll be from now on....

Room Tip: If you do intend to go to the hotel I would advise you not to however, if you have already booked an...

Stayed at The Chequers Plaza Hotel with friends as part of a coach party therefore it was good value for money. The hotel is in a good location being away from the immediate heart of Blackpool but on the sea front with both tram stops and bus stops almost outside the door (on return journey ask for the Cliffs Hotel stop). Our twin bedded room was perfect for our needs and the beds very comfortable. The food was good, the staff friendly and polite, the only downside is the practice of getting two coach parties to arrive at the same time for meals making it very difficult for the waiting staff to serve everyone quickly and some late comers being served before those that arrived on time - but this is our only moan. The bar is a pleasant place, the barman chatty and the entertainment good. Overall a good hotel at a reasonable price. It be a good place to stay for the illuminations.

Room Tip: For a room with a sea view ask at time of booking.
