Difficult to know how to judge this hotel. In terms of comfort, cleanliness and facilities its fine. But it is quite the dullest hotel I've ever stayed in. The fittings and decor, while of decent quality, are so bland and boring that even the big chains( Premier Inn etc,) look like stylish boutique hotels in comparison. Why should this be? This hotel is unique in Blackpool, why does it not exploit this advantage? Apart from some of the rooms and the restaurant overlooking the football pitch and terraces, you'd be hard pushed to find any link with Blackpool football club, past or present. A bit of imagination could surely have produced more than a few tired and slightly embarrassing momentoes on the walls and a bright orange turnstile at the foot of the stairs where few guest would ever see it. Why were we treated instead to so many black and white photo reproductions of Blackpool town which just added to the general dullness of the place.
Sadly therefore the accommodation did not live upto our expectations in terms of style. But, at the end of the day that is a matter of personal taste .
The restaurant was another matter. The décor continued the dull theme which pervaded the rest of the hotel, apart from the view over the pitch. But you had to be lucky enough , as we were, to get a table by the window to appreciate it. And why provide linen table napkins when the tables themselves were small bare faux wood squares which would have would have better suited an slightly upmarket café. We found the whole ambiance of the restaurant quite depressing. We dined there on one evening and found the food to be satisfactory and reasonable value but again not as good as we had anticipated, albeit it cheaper. Breakfast on the first morning was very poor. Scrambled egg was cold and rubbery and the bacon hard and dry. It was sent back and replaced by bacon properly cooked .But.why was an inedible version ever served up in the first place? O n the second morning there was no fresh fruit salad, one of the highlights of our first breakfast, because they were expecting a delivery. A minor matter maybe but not good enough.
An earlier reviewer has commented that the staff seem to lack training in customer care. I could not agree more. The service lacked professionalism. It was friendly enough but there was a distinct lack of real confidence which better training would engender. And while friendliness is to be encouraged. we don't ask for deference, familiarity is something else. We do not expect to be dismissed with "see you later guys" as we leave a ding room.
I hope these criticism are seen as constructive. A stay in a hotel like this could and would be fun. Sadly it wasn,t We stayed on a half price deal which was reasonable. At the the full price it would have been extortionate.
