“Indifferent reception staff”
Reviewed 27 December 2013

We stayed in a twin sea view room for 2 nights in December. We arrived early to enable getting a car park space (disabled) which we had to pay for - even as residents you have to pay £3 per night! On booking in, the reception staff were quite indifferent and not friendly at all - they were not exactly rude but we felt as if we were interrupting their day. Room was lovely and big and clean but cold. There was no heating in the bathroom at all and no blinds or curtains - I think we were the peep show. We dined in the Worrall restaurant - food was OK but only just warm and not much choice. Cleaning staff were very friendly and helpful - reception staff take note. Would not recommend.

Good hotel in a great position, good food and warm and friendly staff, but hotel needs a little money spending on it's public areas and rooms. I Found this hotel to be of great value for money, we stopped on a bed breakfast & evening meal basis, for less than £150 we have paid this for just b&b at other hotels so well worth the money.

We are currently here on a 4 day christmas break we are in room 370 which is large and airy and clean there are few cosmetic issues but on the whole we are happy the room also has a sea view

the food is plain and relatively cooked well the WOrrall dining room is the better of the dining rooms which we are lucky to have what people have to remember is this is a 2 star hotel in the main the staff work hard and are pleasant especially in the dining room and bars

One member of staff in reception does need to improve her customer service skills and I understand some of the rooms are poor

The owners need to do some cosmetic work in the main it is a lovely old hotel

I would also advise not to accept a room overlooking the main road we paid 10.00 for an early check in and was worth it as I would not have accepted a poor standard room

The rooms in this hotel are absolutely freezing, I don't think they know meaning of heating, then due to the lack of sleep because of the temperature we over slept past 10am and had the cleaners banging on the door telling us to get out

From the moment we stepped into the Metropole Hotel, disappointment prevailed. It took the bickering front desk staff a full minute to acknowledge us and when they did they were disorganized, curt and dismissive, even going so far as to complain about how badly their day was going. The conditions of the hotel are deplorable. An ancient musty smell, Duct tape on walls and furniture, stains on the carpeting, missing wallpaper revealing mold and mildew and stairs in dangerous state of disrepair were the rule, not the exception. The staff that was nearly non -existent in terms of being helpful with one exception. No communication as to where the bar or restaurant were or how the dinner worked. Was it a buffet? Was it a served sit down dinner? After sitting for more than 25 minutes without any service or instruction we left the hotel and its dreary dining room and did not take advantage of it again. After expressing disappointment on a myriad of levels to the manager, he offered a free night stay on a future return. He must have known this was a safe bet as a return to this hotel is not an option. When we called our travel agent to complain she was asked by the booking agent, "Oh, Britannia Hotel group?", our agent said "yes", she replied, "No surprise". Upon leaving, we requested another call from the manager which we never received. No surprise here again. Stay away, far, far away from the Grand Metropole Hotel. It's sad to see a hotel that once must have been the jewel in a crown of hotels fall into such literal decay.
